Why aren’t you smiling?

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

You don't have to be afraid to show your teeth anymore! Most people's faces are pretty neutral when they're just walking around throughout the day, so it can be really annoying when strangers see your face and tell you to smile. You're not sad – that's just your normal face! It would be a little weird to walk around with a smile plastered on, so it's likely that these strangers are just trying to talk to you.

A normal response would be to smile back or just ignore them, but perhaps the reason why you're not smiling in the first place is because you're a little self-conscious about your yellowish teeth. Not to worry because there are plenty of ways to get brighter teeth without having to shell out tons of money at the dentist or undergoing bleaching sessions. A kit like Supersmile – Professional Whitening System will give you whiter teeth in a matter of days, and you don't have to deal with messy and uncomfortable trays.

Lipstick shades can also make your teeth look brighter. A product like ModelCo – Star Smile Teeth Whitener and Hydrating Lipstick comes with a whitening product and lipstick all in one, so it's easy too apply wherever you go for a smile that you can flash to anyone – but only if you want to!

The lowdown on the no poo trend

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Could you go weeks without lathering up?It's not unheard of to go a few days in between washings – in fact, many dermatologists and hair stylist recommend it for girls with course hair who need a bit of extra oil. But lately, a no-shampoo (no poo) trend has been emerging, which advocates followers to skip shampooing all together or go a lot longer in between lathers.

The people behind this trend claim that shampoos do more damage than good to your strands, which isn't really true. There are plenty of brands that don't strip your hair of its natural oils and can actually give your scalp more moisture. L`Occitane – Shea Butter Ultra Rich Shampoo is just one example of a product that respects the natural balance of your hair and scalp.

It's totally okay if you want to try the trend, but prepare to get pretty greasy for the first couple of weeks that you start it. A product like Leonor Greyl – Tonique Vegetal sprays onto your scalp and prevents oil accumulation while giving your hair extra body, so you won't look like you need a shower.

Revamping your makeup for fall

Monday, August 29th, 2011

You don't have to get all new products for fall!Just because it's almost fall doesn't mean you have to totally get new makeup. There are ways to make whatever items are in your makeup bag work for the new season.

Lips
• Layer your existing shades to create a fun new hue for fall. For example, brown and pink make a nice subtle rose, and coral and red makes fuchsia. POP Beauty – Lip Lust has plenty of different colors to choose from if you're not already set in the lipstick department.
• Put foundation on your lips to act as a nude lip color that won't compete with fall's rich wardrobe colors.

Skin
• Use face primer on your arms and legs when baring them to get an even tone and draw attention. A product like Dermablend – Leg and Body Cover Creme SPF 15 works great too.
• Use your summer bronzer to create chiseled cheek bones rather than blush. It will create flattering depth and shadow.

Eyes
• Put a bit of lip gloss on your eyelids for a sexy sheen that will highlight and lift your eyes.
• Wear contrasting shadows, which is a hot trend for fall. Use colors you already have and mix them up in fun combinations. You'll look totally in.

How to look cute at the gym

Monday, August 29th, 2011

You can still look hot at the gym!You may not care what you look like while you work out, but if you consider the gym a legitimate place to meet single guys, you may want to take advantage of a few simple tricks that will make you look hot, not sweaty.

1. Skip the over-sized t-shirts and baggy sweats. Instead, try a pair of super comfortable yoga pants (which are a bit more formfitting) and a tank top.

2. Instead of your go-to ponytail or messy bun, try a braid. It'll still look good when it's sweaty and frizz won't be an issue. Plus, lots of guys think they're cute.

3. Wearing your usual foundation at the gym can clog your pores, so to combat a bare face, use a tinted lip balm or a subtle stain, which is less obvious than lipstick and not glossy. GloMinerals – gloTint for Cheeks & Lips is a perfect choice that won't wear off.

4. For bright eyes, curl your lashes and use a waterproof mascara, which won't smudge if you get sweaty. Try Colorescience – Cry Me A River Waterproof Mascara, which will hold the curl and last during your gym session.

Fall makeup trends to try

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

Glossy red lips are in this fall!Just when you’ve mastered the summer makeup look, September rolls around and it’s time for a seasonal update. Luckily, this fall’s trends are easy to create and wearable with just about everything in your wardrobe, so making the switch should be effortless.

1. Metallic smokey eyes are totally in for fall and ready to spice up your night-time look. Just use your regular smoky-eye makeup (dark liner, dark shadow) and add a pop of a metallic shade like gold, bronze or silver to add a smoldering touch. Too Faced – Smokey Eye Kit can help you master the effect.

2. Dark red lips are bold but perfect for a bit of glamour. Keep the rest of your makeup simple to avoid any color competition, and make your lips the center of attention. Choose a wine-inspired color, and add a touch of clear gloss to achieve your own pout perfection.

3. Eyeliner is your best bet for adding definition, but rather than creating a perfect line, smudge it up a bit. Use a powder instead on your top lash lines and go over it with a wet brush for a soft, blended look.

4. Neutral colors are always in, but this fall’s version uses matching shades for a monochromatic look. Use a product like Jane Iredale – In Touch Cream Blush Stick for eyelids, cheeks, and lips. You’ll have a fast, easy application and a simple, pretty glow.

5. Ultra defined lashes are in for fall, so pick your favorite mascara and go a little overboard with multiple coats to make those peepers really pop. Skip the eyeliner and play up just your top lashes for a wide-eyed effect.

6. Matte lipstick is all the rage, and pretty pinks and corals are your best bets for making a serious impact. Use a lipstick brush to start at the center of lips and wing it out into the corners. Apply a bit of powder on top for a shine-free finish that will leave your lips looking soft and kissable.

7. Flushed cheeks are cute for any season, and fall is no exception. For a lasting impression, use a cream blush, which will stay put and make your skin look dewy. Use on the apples of your cheeks to define your facial shape.

8. Nude lips are extra sexy when you keep them glossy. A nude lipstick and matching gloss will warm up your face without making you feel naked, and you won’t have to worry about a perfect application because it will blend right in!

9. A glowing, candlelit effect on your skin is perfect for fall, as long as you stay away from overly shimmery or frosty shades. Choose a warm, peachy highlighter to smooth on the tops of your cheekbones, brow bones and the inner corners of your eyes for a fresh take.

10. It may seem a little strange at first, but glossy eyelids look fresh and pretty. Just put on your normal shade of eyeshadow and top with a touch of lip gloss. A clear shade will let your eyeshadow shine through, but if you’re feeling a little daring, use a tinted lip gloss for a little extra oomph.

11. You can relax when it comes to plucking your eyebrows this fall. A strong, defined brow is the new shape this season, and it’ll bring attention to your eyes. Don’t pluck too much, and try using a brow pencil in a shade darker than your brows to amp up sparse areas and give more definition. Your eyes will be loving the flattering effect.

A girl’s guide to sexy legs

Smooth, beautiful legs are easy to achieve! If you’re going somewhere in a minidress or a pair of shorts, chances are you want your legs to look as taut and smooth as possible. Thankfully, you don’t have to worry about the fact that you’ve been skipping the gym lately because there are ways to make your legs look gorgeous with products.

1. Self tanner is a miracle for legs. Not only does it cover bruises, bug bites and razor burn, but you can actually make your leg muscles look more defined with strategic shading. Just layer on more product where your legs need to be more defined, like on the sides of your thighs. A product like TanTowel – Plus Self-Tan Towelette is easy to apply and will give you a gorgeous glow.

2. A firming moisturizer with caffeine will perk your skin right up and get rid of puffiness from water retention – perfect for those areas of your legs that never seem to get toned.

3. A little shimmer goes a long way for your legs and will make them look healthy and glowing. Try a product like Michael Kors Leg Shine, which smells great and is easy to use. Just apply in a straight line down the front of your thighs and calves. Gorgeous!

How to clean your makeup brushes

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Cleaning your brushes is essential to keep your skin clear. If you’ve never cleaned your makeup brushes, you’re doing your face a disservice. They can pick up tons of bacteria from use and just being stored, which can cause breakouts and can clump up the bristles. Every month, you should give all of your makeup brushes a thorough washing.

Gather up all of your brushes, like those found in Sothys - Makeup Brushes Set, and get an old towel and a gentle face wash. A brush cleaner like beingTRUE Cosmetics - Brush Care + also works great to disinfect. Wet the brushes with warm water and lather cleaner into the bristles. Swirl the brush around in the palm of your hand to make sure the soap gets everywhere. Rinse the bristles out under the warm water until the run-off is clear. You may have to lather up really dirty brushes a couple of times.

When they’re clean, gently wipe them across the towel and store them on the edge of your counter or sink to dry. Don’t store them upright, as this can permanently shape the bristles. Also, avoid soaking your brushes, as prolonged moisture can loosen the glue keeping the bristles attached. Your brushes will be grime-free and dry before you know it!

How to fake fabulous fringe

Plump up those lashes! Not everyone was born with luxurious lashes, but luckily, it's easy to recreate a full-bodied look that will make your peepers pop. After all, your eyes are usually the first thing people look at, so make them stand out with these lash pumping tricks.

1. The first step to fat lashes is preparation. If you put your eye makeup on after your other makeup, prevent smudging by making sure your moisturizer is dry before you begin applying shadow and mascara. Also, use a light powder over your under-eye concealer to make your eyes pop and prevent dark circles from showing through.

2. Curl your eyelashes as close to the roots as possible for maximum effect. Clamp down gently and hold for a few seconds, then repeat, moving along your lashes to create a balanced curve. Better yet, try ModelCo Lash Wand Heated Eye Lash Curler, which you can use just like a mascara wand to instantly curl lashes.

3. Use a thickening mascara, like Jane Iredale – Longest Lash Mascara, holding the wand at the base of your lashes. Wiggle it from side to side before brushing up to the ends. Apply two or three coats, combing and allowing them to dry in between. Hold the wand vertically to coat lower lashes for an eye-popping look.

Makeup tricks to fix any flaw

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Got a flaw you want to fix?Nobody was born perfect, but luckily, there are plenty of tricks that celebrity makeup artists use to fake a flawless face. Steal one of these tips for fixing up one of your problem areas.

Bigger eyes
To make your eyes look bigger, skip the black eyeliner, which makes your eyes look smaller just like an LBD slims your figure. Use a different shade instead, like Too Faced – Metal Eyed Liner, for a pop of color. Then, use a shimmery shadow along your eyes' inner corners and make sure to curl your lashes, which will make your peepers look wide awake.

Perfect skin
Washing your face and using an acne treatment (like Sothys – Desquacrem, which clarifies your complexion) can help make your skin more flawless, but if you do have a blemish, using a concealer brush to apply makeup is more effective than just using your fingers. It can reach into the crevices of the pimple better. Use a powder to seal everything in place.

Smaller nose
You can make your nose look a bit smaller with a strategic makeup application. Use your regular foundation, then swipe on a line of highlighter down the center of the bridge. This will make the darker sides look slimmer. Use a translucent powder on top to keep the colors intact.

The pink hair trend

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Take a cue from Pink - and go pink!If you've been paying attention to celebrity style recently, you've probably noticed that pink hair is in. Celebs like Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani and Lauren Conrad have all been spotted with hints of pink, and if you're looking to go a little wild in the near future, you may want to think about trying it out.

To get the look permanently, you need to have light hair to begin with or have it bleached in order for the color to show up. It's best to have a stylist do this, because an at-home bleach job probably isn't going to turn out well. Once you get the color, make it last longer by using a gentle shampoo, like Leonor Greyl – Bain Vitalisant B, which will keep it shiny. A masque, like BORGHESE – Fango Active Mud for Hair and Scalp, is an added bonus for truly moisturized hair.

If you're not quite ready for dye, try a couple of pink extensions, which can last for months. Your hairstylist can apply them with a special tool which attaches them to your existing hair. Avoid putting conditioner directly on the bonded area to prevent it from slipping off. Otherwise, style just like you would natural hair for a cool, edgy look.
