Pretty in polka dot nails

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Polka dot nails will complement any spotted outfit! You may have noticed that polka dots are everywhere lately, which means they're officially a trend in 2012. If you're looking for a fun way to add them to every outfit, there's no better way than to create a spotted manicure. Try some of these ideas, inspired by Glamour magazine.

1. Dots all over. Paint your nails a solid color using Nailtini – Straight Up Color Nail Lacquer, then choose a contrasting color to make polka dots.

2. Down the middle. After choosing a color for the background, make a line of spots down the center of your nail with different shades of polish.

3. Accent one nail. Update any regular manicure by making one of your nails speckled. Celebrities often choose to accentuate their ring fingers.

4. French-style. Paint your nails one color, then use dots to create a French manicure effect on the tips of your nails. Be sure to use a topcoat like Lippmann Collection – On A Clear Day Top Coat to seal them in.

5. Chic diagonals. Use a pastel shade for the background, then make a few diagonal lines of different colored dots across each nail.

Preventing the dreaded lipstick teeth

Friday, January 20th, 2012

There's nothing worse than getting lipstick on your teeth!More than likely, you've seen at least one unfortunate soul walking around with bright red lipstick on her teeth. Whether you told her about the slip-up is irrelevant, but you probably made a note to yourself never to fall victim to this lipstick-teeth phenomenon. But now that red lipstick is a total beauty "do," how do you prevent it from happening?

According to Cosmopolitan magazine, red lipsticks normally have more pigment than lighter shades, and the contrast between white teeth is more dramatic. To keep your grin from wearing red, it helps to subdue the color. After you apply a lipstick like theBalm – Read My Lips Lipstick, blot it with a tissue.

Next, use a cotton swab to rub any pigment off of your teeth, then smear a bit of petroleum jelly on the other end of the stick and swipe it over your teeth. It will create a handy barrier that will protect your pearly whites and make your smile a bit glossier (just don't use a ton).

Red lipstick can really highlight the color of your teeth, so make sure your white is up to par by using Supersmile – Travel Kit.

Whether you're going out or staying in with a guy, a gal or a group of people, here are a few things you should stock up on before February 14 so you can look and feel your best.

1. Body butter. Touchable skin is likely a must on this lovey-dovey holiday, so use Archipelago Botanicals – Milk Body Butter all over beforehand for baby-soft skin.

3. A great scent. Something romantic, like GIORGIO ARMANI – Armani Code For Women Eau de Parfum Spray is perfect for the occasion.

Two easy steps to look more awake

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Sometimes it takes work to look awake in the morning!Everyone has a big night out every now and then, which often results in a less-than-perfect morning. Not only are you likely to feel tired, but your complexion probably won't be glowing and your eyes might look a bit puffy and sleep-deprived. Not to worry, though – there are two easy ways to wake up your look.

According to Glamour magazine's beauty blog, nothing works better than shimmery eyeshadow to brighten up your eyes and make them appear wider and more awake. Some sparkly shades look too ashy, but gold is always foolproof. Try dusting a bit of Bare Escentuals – Glimmer Eye Shadow in Desire right underneath your lower lash line.

The next step is to wake up your complexion. Tired skin tends to look dull and lifeless, but a creamy blush can fix that. It'll give your cheeks a subtle flush and provide a hint of dewiness, which is perfect for when you're feeling "blah" in the morning. Use Paula Dorf – Cheek Color Cream to achieve your perfect glow.

A seventies hair trend worthy of revival

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Center parts are huge these days!Whether you were a disco queen in the 1970s or barely a twinkle in your mother's eye, you're probably familiar with a recent hair trend that's been popping up on celebrities left and right. That's the straight-as-an-arrow center part.

According to Cosmopolitan magazine, the center part is making a comeback in a huge way. The People's Choice Awards in Los Angeles recently featured a variety of stars who showed up wearing their luscious locks parted down the middle. Case in point: Kristen Bell wore beachy waves, Nina Dobrev had a sleek style and Ashley Greene went curly.

No matter which style you decide to go with, a center part will ensure that it's on-trend and totally chic. Start by using a great conditioner, like Hamadi – Shea Rice Milk Conditioner. This will leave your hair completely manageable and touchably soft. Follow up with Hamadi – Shea Spray to tame frizz and give yourself added shine.

Make a center part by aligning a comb with the bridge of your nose, then pulling it straight back. You can tame any baby hairs with a bit of hairspray, then you're good to go!

Adding oil to your makeup routine

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Beauty products with oil are all the rage these days! You may think that oil is the last thing you want to put on your face and body, but in fact, many people have started embracing the oil trend throughout the beauty world.

According to Cosmopolitan magazine, “Some oils actually help treat and prevent acne. Others, intended for makeup removal and/or skin rejuvenation, won’t make you break out.” Oil cleansers and moisturizers are perfect for harsh winter weather that tends to strip the dewiness right out of your skin.

If the skin around your eyes could use a little TLC this winter, consider using Bioelements – Multi-Task Eye Oil. This lubricating formula will nourish the sensitive skin around your eyes and give it plenty of antioxidants to combat the effects of aging.

Kneipp – NatuRenew Organic Body Oil is a great choice for your body during the winter, as it works to improve your skin’s appearance and elasticity. Everyday skin conditions like stretch marks and scars can be improved with the use of oils like these, as well as signs of aging and extra dry patches of skin.

Sunscreen in the winter: do you really need it?

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Even though you're getting less sun, you still need SPF in the winter!Unless you're headed on a tropical vacation, you're probably not going to find yourself out in the sunlight much this winter. Cloudy days tend to happen more often, and colder weather means you're less likely to stay outside for long periods of time.

However, that doesn't mean you should skip wearing sunscreen. Believe it or not, you can still pick up some of the sun's damaging UV rays just from being outside for a couple of minutes. Also, clouds aren't good protection because UV rays can penetrate right through them.

You don't have to go with a heavy sunscreen formula like you would for a day at the beach. Instead, opt to include a bit of SPF in your moisturizer or makeup routine. A product like TRUE Cosmetics – Protective Mineral Foundation SPF 17 Powder gives you the coverage you're looking for, both for blemishes and sun protection.

If you're really missing the way your skin looks with plenty of sunshine, you can easily achieve a bronzed look at home with Youngblood – Natural Mineral Radiance (Sundance). A bit on your cheekbones, forehead and the bridge of your nose will make you look radiant – not like you've been cooped up inside.

Use shadow instead of liner on your lower lash line

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Eyeshadow instead of liner will give you a softer, more feminine look!If you're searching for a way to make smaller eyes look bigger or create a soft, feminine effect with your eye makeup, all it takes is a switch from eyeliner to eyeshadow on your lower lash lines.

According to the Beauty Department, using eyeshadow on your bottom lash line can draw attention to your eyes without making them seem smaller. It can also give you a softer look, which is great for occasions when you don't want your makeup to look too harsh – like at work.

Use a smudging brush, like TRUE Cosmetics – Eye Shadow Brush, to create a line of eyeshadow along your lower lash line. You can choose any color you want depending on what your preferences are. The effect works well with shimmery colors like white or pink, but you can go bolder with shades from Too Faced – Eye Shadow Insurance Policy Collection.

For a bit more intensity and a longer-lasting application, The Beauty Department recommends dipping your brush in water before the eyeshadow. This will create a creamier formula with more pigment.

Mix up your eyeliner routine with colorful pencil and liquid formulas

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Switching up your eyeliner routine is easier than you think!Wearing the same old eyeliner look can get boring day after day, but luckily there's a new way to wear your eyeliner that will freshen up your look and turn date night prepping into an exciting affair.

Glamour magazine's beauty blog spotted a two-toned eyeliner effect that Michelle Trachtenberg wore on the red carpet. The look featured a bold black wing-shape along the upper lash line and a softer, purple pencil line along the bottom lashes.

You can easily recreate this edgy makeup yourself as long as you have the right products. Try using a thick line liquid liner like Too Faced – Liquif-Eye Eye Shadow Transformer Eyeliner to create a sexy cat-eye along your top lashes. Then, use a shimmery pencil, like Too Faced – Liquid Lava Glossy Eyeliner in a fun color like purple or blue to trace your lower lash line.

You'll get a gorgeous affect that's surprising because the color isn't that noticeable from far away. The closer your dates get, the more likely they are to notice your fabulous makeup.
