Katie Holmes uses unexpected color combinations to bring out her lovely eye color!Katie Holmes has always had a lot going for her when it comes to beauty and fashion, making her a role model for women everywhere who want to achieve the perfect girl-next-door look. If you're a big fan of the smoky eye but are looking for a subtler way to pull it off while still highlighting your peepers, take a cue from one of Katie's recent looks.

According to Glamour Magazine's beauty blog, the actress was spotted at an event wearing an understated smoky eye that relied on bronze and eggplant eyeshadow and black eyeliner to make the color of her irises pop.

You can easily get the look yourself by using an eyeliner pencil like Youngblood – Eye Liner Pencil in Black. Just use it to line your inner rims and the outer corners of your upper lash lines. A line that's as thin as possible will work best.

Now, use a bronze eyeshadow on your lower lids, focusing on the center just beneath your pupils. Finish up with Jane Iredale – PurePressed Eye Shadow in Wine & Roses, sweeping it across your upper lids and on either side of the bronze shadow on your lower lids. A coat of mascara is all you need to finish off the look!

Celeb makeup artist Amy Nadine makes a case for a matte face

Monday, June 11th, 2012

Matte makeup is just as flattering as shimmer! There's nothing like a bit of shimmer to catch the light and draw attention to your favorite features. But celebrity makeup artist Amy Nadine, who regularly contributes to Lauren Conrad's The Beauty Department blog, thinks matte makeup can be just as flattering if done right.

Recently, Nadine worked on Anna Paquin for a shoot for Emmy Magazine, using an all-matte palette that was both modern and chic – without looking corpse-like. When you're going for a look like this, perfect blending is key.

You can create a matte face too by using PETER THOMAS ROTH – Max Anti-Shine Mattifying Gel to prep your skin before applying makeup. It'll absorb and control oil all day long – without leaving your skin feeling dry.

Once you've set up the perfect canvas, matte cosmetics without a hint of shine will ensure that your look is totally on-trend. A rich, highly pigmented shadow blended into your creases will give your eyes dimension, while bronzer and blush will create contours and give your cheeks a healthy flush. A lip stain like GloMinerals – gloTint for Cheeks & Lips can provide lasting color without any distracting shimmer.

Need a few makeup tips? Use these from expert Bobbie Thomas! At a recent gathering to celebrate gloProfessional’s latest mineral products, style expert Bobbie Thomas shared some of her best tips for achieving a perfect complexion. Not everyone has smooth, clear skin, but with the right makeup tricks, it’s possible to create a flawless visage. Here’s how.

1. Stock up on the right accessories. While it might seem like an afterthought at times, investing in a good set of applicators and brushes is vital. GloMinerals – gloBrush Roll Kit with Brushes in Black has everything you need to get maximum control over your beauty products.

2. Coverage is key. To make your blemishes invisible, Bobbie recommends choosing a concealer that’s a shade lighter than the rest of your complexion, then blending it seamlessly into the surrounding area. being TRUE – Protective Illuminating Concealer has three shades for a perfect match.

3. Bronzer and blush should go underneath a powder foundation. Powder formulas will give you lightweight, even coverage – unlike a liquid – and putting it on after your blush and bronzer will ensure a seamless transition of color.

What gift will you get Dad this Father’s Day?

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

What will you get your dad this Father's Day?Even though Mother’s Day tends to overshadow the holiday devoted to dads everywhere, celebrating Father’s Day this June 17 with a thoughtful gift is still a good way to show your father that you’re grateful for all he’s done for you. But what will you get him? Some dads seem to have everything they could possibly want! Here are several ideas to help you decide on the perfect present this Father’s Day.

1. Tickets to see his favorite sports team. Whether it’s for a baseball game this summer or a football game next season, chances are your dad will love the opportunity to watch his favorite team play. Get two tickets so you, Mom or a friend can accompany him for the perfect day out.

2. A deluxe shaving kit like eShave – Start Up Kit. It comes with a genuine badger brush, which exfoliates, softens and raises the hair for a shave that’s as close as possible. The set also includes a pre-shave oil, shave cream and after shave cream, all in a convenient black travel bag. Stubble will be a thing of the past for your dapper dad!

3. A home brewing kit. Does your father have a taste for cold, delicious brews? Instead of taking him out for a night at the local brewery, get your dad everything he needs to create his own ale. A couple of beer mugs to go with the set will ensure that he’ll be able to taste his masterpiece in style.

4. Anti-aging skincare products like Jack Black – Line Smoother Face Moisturizer. If your dad has started to complain about the fact that he’s getting older, a few choice skincare products to combat fine lines, wrinkles and age spots might be just the thing to lift his spirits. Lightweight and oil-free, your dad will barely notice that he’s wearing this moisturizer – until he starts seeing results!

5. The latest gadget. If you have siblings who can help you buy a splurge-worthy item for Dad, why not get him up-to-date on the latest technologies? Whether he’s into computers, eBooks, cameras, smartphones, mp3 players or television, there’s likely a new product out that he’d love to get his hands on.

6. A classic yet cool tie. If you think your father could use a bit of direction when it comes to his fashion tastes, you might be doing him a favor by providing him with a go-to tie to wear for special occasions. Choose one that complements his personality and favorite color scheme so he’ll always look dashing.

7. A new fragrance, like RALPH LAUREN – Polo For Men Eau de Toilette Spray. If your dad doesn’t have a signature scent to call his own, he’d likely jump at the chance to impress your mom with a manly new cologne.

8. Tools to help him get his grill on. If your dad considers himself the master of the grill, a few new accessories designed to help him make the most of his skills might be the perfect present. Spatulas, serving plates, aprons, marinades and spices are all fair game.

9. A beach kit. If your dad enjoys nothing more than a relaxing day by the shore, a beach kit might be a great idea. A brand new cooler, a plush towel, a new swimsuit and a sunblock like Dermalogica – Daily Defense Block SPF15 are all good choices that he’ll get a lot of use out of.

10. A poker set. Does your father like to get together with his guy friends every now and then for a game of poker? If he doesn’t already have his own set of chips and a table to play on, you can bring the party to his house by supplying him with all the goods.

Three ways to rock a fishtail braid

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012

Fishtail braids are super versatile!Braids are everywhere lately, which is great news if you're looking for an easy way to add a fun element to your regular hairstyle. But fishtail braids are even more unexpected, and they're super easy to create. They've also been spotted everywhere lately – even on celebrities like Whitney Port and Ciara. Here are three ways you can rock a fishtail.

1. Messy and to the side. Add shine to your locks with a product like Hamadi – Shea Spray, then create waves by twisting sections of hair around your finger and flat-ironing them before letting them go. Part hair and pull it loosely to the side, then make a fishtail. A few pieces falling out here and there will soften the look.

2. Peek-a-boo. After shampooing with a luxurious product like Leonor Greyl – Shampooing Au Miel, blow dry your hair straight and flat iron it if necessary. Take a section of hair from underneath the top layer (near your ear) and braid into a fishtail.

3. Wrap-around. Once your hair is up in a ponytail, take a piece from the tail and braid it into a fishtail. To hide the elastic and provide some unexpected texture, wrap the fishtail around the pony and secure with bobby pins.

Doutzen Kroes goes for a cat eye at the CFDA Awards

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012

Doutzen Kroes always manages to look gorgeous! At the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Awards, you know there has to be a lot of gorgeousness going on. Victoria's Secret model Doutzen Kroes certainly didn't disappoint at the event, wearing a stunning black gown and a classic cat eye look that demanded attention to her beautiful baby blues.

According to Glamour Magazine's beauty blog, black eyeliner should definitely be your go-to makeup choice when you're looking to make your eyes pop. Too Faced – Liquif-Eye Eye Shadow Transformer Eyeliner can help you turn any eyeshadow into a liquid liner, so you can easily define the shape of your eyes and create the perfect cat eye.

Like Doutzen, you should keep the rest of your makeup minimal when you're relying on a strong eye to carry your appearance. Blush or lipstick that's too bright will take the focus off of your peepers, so stick to peachy-pink shades or nudes when you're choosing products. Jane Iredale – PurePressed Blush comes in colors that can blend seamlessly into your skin. Now all you need is a killer LBD and you'll be ready to pull off Doutzen's look!

Did you know sunscreen can prevent a shiny face?

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

Sunscreen can help zap shine on your face!It may seem counterintuitive, but slathering on plenty of sunscreen can actually help mattify your complexion this summer. When it's hot out, our skin produces more sebum and sweat, which can turn your visage into a slippery oil slick in no time. However, Allure Magazine points out that sunblock application is a valid way to prevent excess shine.

When you're using sunscreen (which you should be doing everyday), you don't need to put on your regular moisturizer. Use a sunblock like PETER THOMAS ROTH – Uber-Dry Sunscreen SPF 30, which is enriched with vitamins to help protect against damage from free radicals. According to Allure, experts recommend using a teaspoon of the lotion for your entire face.

Ingredients like micronized zinc, titanium dioxide and denatured alcohol (written on labels as alcohol denat or SD alcohol 40) will help soak up extra oil, so look for those when you're searching for the perfect formula. Of course, it never hurts to stock up on Jane Iredale – Facial Blotting Papers, which are an easy fix for getting rid of shine without ruining your makeup.

Recreating Mila Kunis’ sexy smoky eyes in a snap

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

Mila Kunis is the queen of sexy smoky eyes!Mila Kunis is known best for her sultry stare, which makes her a great role model if you've been looking for ways to revamp your appearance for a big date or special event. Glamour Magazine's beauty blog reports that the actress showed up at Spike's Guys Choice Awards recently wearing a gorgeous smoky eye that's super easy to copy.

While it may seem like the result of tons of products, Mila's look is actually fairly simple. It starts with a thick line of black eyeliner like BORGHESE – Eye Accento Pencil all around the eyes. Then, a shimmery gray shadow was used close to the bottom lash lines and all the way up to the creases on the upper lids.

For a bit of added depth and interest, a halo of bronze shadow surrounded the gray. You can use a taupe eyeshadow or even a bronzer like Jane Iredale – Moonglow Quad Bronzer to achieve the effect. Finally, a few coats of mascara will make your lashes long and thick like Mila's. Talk about a sexy look!
