How to get an ultra-sleek ponytail

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Here's how you can create an ultra-sleek ponytail!Have you ever wondered how some girls manage to get their ponytails so gosh-darn perfect? While lying over the edge of your bed with a comb in hand is a method many ladies have used (it gets the job done…but might send a rush to your head), there's an easier way to do it. Here's how The Beauty Department likes to style a super-sleek pony.

First, smooth your dry hair with a product like Hamadi – Shea Hair Cream. It helps tame frizz and hydrate dry ends, which you don't want ruining your look. Make sure to comb it throughout your hair.

Now create a ponytail that leaves out the hair closest to your hairline. It sounds weird, and it kind of looks strange, but don't worry – this isn't the final look. Essentially, it's like a half-updo with the majority of your hair up in the ponytail. Use a comb to get rid of any bumps – it's okay if they build up toward the elastic.

Now start gathering the free strands of hair and smoothing them over the ponytail you just created. Use a comb as you do this to make sure it's totally sleek. When you've got it all together, tie another elastic around the base.

Finally, use a bit of hairspray like Fekkai – COIFF Sheer Hold Hairspray to smooth down any flyaways. That's it!

Olivia Wilde’s stacked bun hairstyle: fall’s hottest updo

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Olivia Wilde has mastered the stacked bun updo!Olivia Wilde's outfits and makeup looks are the definition of chic – it's hard to pinpoint a time when this gal didn't look downright fabulous. And at the recent premiere of Butter, Olivia showed up with a hairstyle that Glamour Magazine's beauty blog predicts will be super trendy this fall. What was it? A row of stacked buns.

Stacked buns aren't that new – Heidi Klum and other celebrities have been experimenting with them for a while now – but Olivia's were super fresh. They were loosely twisted into romantic coils that gave her a somewhat Victorian look, which is the perfect effect for fall.

So how do you get it yourself? Start by prepping your hair with a shine spray like Hamadi – Shea Spray. Part your hair where you normally part it, then begin gathering your hair into four sections, starting at the crown of your head. Use clips to hold the different sections in place.

Begin with the top section, twisting the strands into a loose bun and pinning it in place with bobby pins. Then make your way down to the very last section, keeping the buns relatively uniform (but not perfect).

Finish with a generous mist of Leonor Greyl – Structure Naturelle and you'll be as glam as Olivia!

Want hair that’s as straight as Jennifer Garner’s?

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Want hair that's as straight as Jennifer Garner's?Jennifer Garner doesn't normally partake in the latest trends, but that wasn't the case recently when she exited a New York City hotel with sleek, smooth strands that were so shiny, she might've been able to see her reflection in them (okay, maybe not THAT shiny). Super-straight, ultra-glossy hair is totally trendy this fall, and even girls with curls can get the look.

Start out in the shower with a glossing shampoo that smoothes your hair's cuticles and follow up with a similar sleekifying conditioner. When you're rinsing it out, turn the water temperature down so it's cold. This helps seal the hair's cuticles, trapping in moisture.

Now blowdry your hair as usual, taking special care to aim the nozzle down your hair toward the ends. If you go in any other direction, it could rough up your strands and create frizz.

When your hair's totally dry, part your locks wherever you'd like (Jennifer did hers down the center), and heat up your flat iron. Carefully smooth the iron over small sections of your hair, making sure that you don't stay in one spot for too long.

Finish up by spreading a pea-sized amount of glossing cream throughout your hair, staying away from the roots. Comb through and you're done!

How to copy Ashley Greene’s eye makeup from the Butter premiere

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Ashley Greene always has awesome eye makeup ideas to copy!Ashley Greene seldom has an off-day when it comes to beauty, and it was no different at the recent premiere of Butter. Rocking a gorgeous mane of center-parted, sideswept curls, gold hoop earrings and a delicate pink outfit, the actress was the definition of sweet and pretty. If you want to copy the fabulous eye makeup that she wore to the event, Glamour Magazine's beauty blog got the details.

Start out by lining your upper lash lines with a brown eyeliner like GloMinerals – gloPrecision Eye Pencil in Brown, smudging it into the base of the lashes. Then sweep a shimmery rose gold eyeshadow all over your eyelids, going a bit past the crease.

Use a taupe eyeshadow like Youngblood – Pressed Eyeshadows in Topaz in the creases and along the outer edges of your lower lash lines for dimension. Follow up with a gold eyeshadow or eyeliner along the rest of the lower lash line, adding a bit into the inner corners of your eyes.

To finish up, give your lashes two generous coats of lengthening or volumizing mascara, taking care to get all the way down to the base of each lash. If you focus especially on the lashes at the outer corners of your eyes, you'll end up with Ashley's cute flare effect.

The secret to Anna Kendrick’s big, bright eyes at the Pitch Perfect premiere

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Anna Kendrick had smokin' hot eyes at the Pitch Perfect premiere!Anna Kendrick looked absolutely gorgeous at the Hollywood premiere of Pitch Perfect. She had glossy wavy hair, the perfect shiny apricot lipstick, peach-flushed cheeks and amazing eye makeup. A pair (or two) of false lashes was probably responsible for those luxuriously long lashes, and her smoky eye makeup was perfection, but what really made her eyes look so big?

According to Glamour Magazine's beauty blog, it was the eyeliner on her inner rims. The eyeliner pencil was a light nude that bordered on white, which made the whites of her eyes look bigger, lending her a doe-eyed look. It also helped reflect light, which worked equally well to brighten up the eye area. A product like Youngblood – Eye-Illuminating Duo would give you the same effect.

Another trick that the starlet used was applying a shimmery highlighter on the inner corners of her eyes, which helped combat the shadows that are usually prominent in that area. She even went a step further by adding a bit of the highlighter in the centers of her lower lash lines. The girl really knows how to amp up her peepers!

Still haven’t found the perfect nail polish dotting tool?

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Still haven't found the perfect nail polish dotting tool? You may have a nearly full set of Lippmann collection accessories, but have you found the perfect tools for creating those intricate details that are so popular in today's nail art craze? There are some products out there that can make it easier to get straight lines, crackle effects and even magnetic designs – but what about dots?

Luckily, The Beauty Department found a solution. While it's possible to create your own dotting tool by sticking a pin into a pencil's eraser, not everyone has these materials on hand. But if you own a mechanical pencil, or even a regular pencil, you're golden!

Just use the tip of the pencil to dip into your colorful nail polishes, then lightly press it onto your nails wherever you think a dot would look appropriate. An all-over polka dot pattern would be fun, as would dots just on the tips – or maybe along one side of each nail. See what happens when you use different pencils – regular wooden ones might give you different sized dots depending on how sharp they are, which could open up a new realm of possibilities!

How to pull off trendy Baroque-inspired lips

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Want trendy Baroque-inspired lips? Here's how to get them!Baroque-inspired fashions are a big trend this fall, and there's no reason why you can't translate them to your makeup looks. In fact, Baroque makeup would be the perfect complement to any new Baroque clothing items you pick up!

The Baroque period began in the early 1600s and was characterized by rich, luxurious details like gilded gold objects and plush velvety materials. The Beauty Department created a fabulous Baroque lip that takes both of these characteristics into consideration.

You'll only need three products for this look: a lip liner like Too Faced – Perfect Lips Lip Liner, a rich burgundy lipstick and a gold cream eyeshadow like GloMinerals – gloReflection Cream Eye Shadow in Gilded Bronze.

Apply the lip liner on your lips, being careful to trace the exact shape without going outside of your natural lip line. Then use the liner to fill in your pout – this will provide a good base for the lipstick.

Smooth on a coat of the lipstick, then use your finger to pick up some of the gold eyeshadow. Press it onto the center of your bottom lip, then add a smaller amount to the center of your top lip. Done!

Want Gwen Stefani’s trick for brighter, more lifted cheeks?

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Want Gwen Stefani's secret for a glowing face? When it comes to looking like a fabulous rock star, Gwen Stefani knows what's up. She's got the platinum blonde hair, the glamorous fashion and the signature red lipstick look down pat. And luckily, she also has a secret makeup trick that can help brighten your face and make your cheekbones look lifted. Dying to know what it is?

According to Glamour Magazine's beauty blog, it's a hint of shimmer dust up by her temples. Usually, ladies apply highlighter to areas like the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, the cupid's bow and the brow bones, but this spot's completely new.

The trick is to use a shimmer that's not TOO glittery, otherwise you'll be getting into disco diva territory. Look for fine particles rather than chunky ones, and sweep it on lightly for a subtle effect.

Of course, to make it really pop, you should contour your cheekbones as usual with a bit of bronzer and brush. This can help make your face look brighter and younger, and who wouldn't want that?

Three ways to rock half-moon manicures this fall

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

Half-moon manicures are going to be hot this fall!If you're looking for a cute new manicure idea that's edgy and cool without being too out-there, the half-moon mani is it. And the best part is that it's easy to create and you can choose color combinations for any setting, from the office to the club. Here are three ideas to check out this fall.

1. Metallic and black. It's up to you whether you choose silver, gold, bronze, copper or any other metallic shade of glittery nail lacquer, but mix it with black! Paint your entire nail with two coats of black and let it dry. Afterward, use tape, nail stickers or hole reinforcement labels from your local office supply store to section off the half-moon shape at the top. Paint inside the shape, let dry and finish with top coat.

2. Nude and navy. For a classy look that's perfect to pair with fall's darker fashions, try this chic color combo. Instead of painting the nude-colored half moons on top of the navy, you might want to section that area off first, paint the navy, then do the nude in the space leftover.

3. Oxblood and chestnut. These shades are hot this season, so there's no doubt that your nails will be totally en vogue. Pick up a rich maroon shade and a light brown, then use the brown on the half-moon shaped area. Finish with a shiny top coat and you're done!
