One easy way to switch up your colorful eyeliner routine

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

Looking for a new way to wear colorful eyeliner? If you're a makeup fanatic, you've probably already tried experimenting with bright, colorful eyeliners as part of your look. They're wonderful for adding a pop of color to your upper lash lines, whether you add them on top of a black eyeliner or not. But if you're looking for something even bolder, maybe it's time to rethink where you draw that eyeliner on.

According to The Beauty Department, one trendy place where you might want to try using colorful eyeliner is along your lower lash lines. But before you go drawing it on, take these tips into account for the rest of your makeup – you don't want your face to be too busy!

Start out by applying the eyeliner along your lower lash lines before you add any other makeup. The brightness will help you gauge when things are getting to be too much as you apply the rest of your products.

The source recommends sticking with a shimmery taupe eyeshadow all over your lids, which will go with whatever color you chose for the eyeliner. Then just coat your top and bottom lashes with black mascara.

How do you curl your lashes?

Monday, October 22nd, 2012

Curling your lashes is easy with this simple trick!By now, you probably know that curling your lashes is an essential step in completing your eye makeup routine. The curl helps to make your lashes look longer and more noticeable, and can give the illusion of wider and brighter peepers – of course you'd want that! But what's the easiest, most effective way to get the job done?

Unless you have an awesome heated eyelash curler like the Talika – Heated Eye Lash Curler, you're going to need to figure out the best technique to use with a regular eyelash curler. It might seem like the most effective way to do it is to squeeze your lashes at the base, in the middle and one-quarter of the length from the tips, but there's a better method!

According to The Beauty Department, all you need to do is invert the curler when you're gripping your lashes at the base. Just slide your curler over your lashes as usual, then gently squeeze down on them near the base of your lashes. Don't get too close, otherwise it pinches! Now rotate your wrist so the curler is upside down, then squeeze firmly for five seconds.

You'll find that your lashes are perfectly curled this way, and you can make it even better by doing one more crimp near the tips using the regular method. Then just add a coat of your favorite volumizing mascara and you're good to go!

How to soothe your skin and strengthen it against razor burnTired of dealing with itchy red bumps and annoying stubble after you shave? If you crave the feel of smooth, ultra-soft skin, you don’t have to resort to expensive beauty treatments or visits to the salon to get the effect you want – all you need are the right beauty products and you’ll be on your way to caressable skin in no time!

The first trick? Resisting the urge to shave areas that are already irritated.

“You’ll cut the tops off the bumps and irritate them even more,” Jessica Wu, M.D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Southern California Medical School, told

Instead of ignoring inflammation altogether, apply a replenishing gel like Sothys – HOMME Hydrating Active Care to your skin to hydrate and soothe areas that are inflamed. Packed with nutrients, this gel can help your flesh feel more supple, even after you’ve shaved.

After using a razor, it’s important to nourish your skin with a calming balm. Not only can this help prevent ingrown hairs and inflammation, but it can feel great too! Featuring a great blend of natural ingredients, apply something like Dermalogica Post-Shave Balm to your skin after shaving.

The number-one product you need to help fix a greasy face

An anti-shine mattifier is all you need to nix oil!Let’s face it: when it comes to mattifying products, you have tons of options – probably too many! How are you supposed to decide on one when there are pressed powder compacts, translucent finishing dusts, matte foundations and blotting papers? Well, it’s easier than you think! Just skip them all in favor of the only product you really need to fix the issue.

What is it? An anti-shine mattifier. According to The Beauty Department, tapping a little bit of this product onto the shiny areas of your face works a whole lot better than caking on powder, wiping your face with tissues or blotting with papers, and it’s totally undetectable.

So what products should you try? How about Murad – Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15, which is clinically proven to reduce shine on contact and prevents oil from building up by 78 percent over an eight-hour period. Willow bark extract also helps to treat blemishes and clear up problem skin. It even has SPF 15 for sun damage protection!

Or, try BABOR – Skinovage PX Perfect Combination Daily Mattifying Cream, a balancing cream that’s perfect for combination or oily skin. Lentil extracts and rich starch help mattify your visage while milk peptides, glutamic acid, cysteine and vitamins regulate oil production by up to 50 percent and help reduce the appearance of pores. Skin-softening pistachio and jojoba oils are also part of the deal, while vitamin E protects against damage from free radicals. This product does it all!

If you have a problematic skin, you may also want try some of the other top skincare brands like Exuviance or G.M. Collin.

Does your skin need a pick-me-up?

Caffeine isn't just good in coffee - it's great on your skin!If you're like most people, your morning routine probably includes making either a cup of coffee or a cup of tea. How else are you supposed to feel energized enough for work or class after a late night? Caffeine is a great energy booster for your brain and body, but did you know that it's also beneficial for your skin?

According to Elle Canada magazine, caffeine has three major perks for your face and body: it's an antioxidant that helps protect your complexion from damaging free radicals, it shrinks blood vessels that cause dark circles and discoloration and it dehydrates fat cells, getting rid of puffiness.

The best part of the deal is that you can give your visage the boost it needs in a variety of ways. For example, Glamour magazine's beauty blog recommends using cool, moist green tea bags as eye compresses to reduce puffiness and dark circles. This is the perfect way to get some use out of those bags after you've brewed yourself a cup!

Of course, plenty of skincare products can also deliver you caffeine's benefits. Try Dermalogica – mediBac Sebum Clearing Masque, which deep-cleanses your complexion, prevents zits and absorbs excess oil. Or, use an eye cream like Murad – Essential-C Eye Cream SPF 15, which increases firmness around the eye area and stimulates collagen production.

Are you abusing your nails?

Thursday, October 18th, 2012

Are you abusing your nails? When it comes to anti-aging skincare, savvy women know to devote as much attention to their hands as they do their complexions. How come? It's simple, really. Hands can reveal a lot about a person's overall health and wellness. But even if hands are the pinnacle of your priorities, you may find that your nails aren't as sharp-looking as you'd like.

The problem with your talons may come down to something as simple as bad habits. Your mom probably shook her head whenever she saw you munching away on your nails as a kid, and if this is a quirk you've carried over from childhood, chances are it's one of the main reasons your nails aren't in great shape. If you've also been neglecting to care for your cuticles, your nail beds could be overrun in the worst kind of way possible by cuts and inflammation.

By applying an ultra-hydrating cuticle oil treatment to the base of your nails on a regular basis, all the nutrients you'll need will be right at your fingertips.

One of the other major problems that nails contend with is yellowing. Smoker's beware – this vexing dilemma is often directly correlated to nicotine usage. However, frequent nail polish use can also lend a yellowish tint to your talons. To overcome this, be sure to grab a multi-functional enamel polish that acts as a base and fixing coat to correct any discolorations. Not only will you see a difference in the way polish looks when applied, but you'll also be sporting stronger, healthier nails!

How to master Emma Stone’s alluring, smudged eye look

How to master Emma Stone's alluring, smudged eye lookActress Emma Stone has already broke down beauty barriers by exchanging her sultry signature red locks for a warm, honey-blond look to match her character Gwen Stacey in the hit superhero flick, The Amazing Spider-Man. And while yes, Stone has gone on record stating she's a natural blond, we can't help but pine for those days where she rocked her auburn mane with poise.

But all that said, Stone looked absolutely radiant at the Annual ELLE Women in Hollywood Tribute on October 15. Sporting a flirty pink shift dress and a cute updo, the star emanated confidence at the event, yet it was her smoldering smudged eye makeup that really stole the show.

To recreate Stone's enchanting smudged eye look, start by applying an eyeshadow primer like Too Faced – Shadow Insurance over your lids, then go for a creamy shadow in a neutral tone. Dab a little under your eyes for captivating effect – once you're done, use a waterproof pencil to trace your upper lash line.

Holding the tip of your pencil over a lighter for a few moments will help you achieve the smudgy yet oh-so-glam style Stone masters here – just avoid going over your eye's water line, otherwise you could venture into raccoon territory. As a finishing touch, grab a thickening mascara like GloMinerals – gloLash Lengthening Mascara and apply it to your lashes for a radiant, red carpet-worthy look!

Can you guess the perfect makeup complement to a pair of glasses?

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

Bright lips and stylish frames - the perfect match!A pair of glasses emphasizes your eyes, but when it comes to makeup, it's not eyeshadow, eyeliner or mascara that provides the perfect accompaniment to your stylish frames. Instead, it's lipstick! According to Glamour Magazine's beauty blog, bright lipstick is the perfect complement to a pair of geek-chic glasses, no matter what shape or color they are. So how can you pull off the look?

First, you'll need to tone it down when it comes to your eyes and cheeks. Skip bright blush and flashy eyeshadow looks – you want all of the attention to be on your glasses and lips. Go with a peachy blush, which has the most natural finish for any skin tone. For your eyes, simply use brown or black eyeliner like BORGHESE – Eye Accento Pencil to define the shape of your peepers, then sweep on a coat or two of mascara.

Now for the fun part! Choose a shade of lipstick that pairs perfectly with your frames. It could be black glasses with orange lipstick, bright pink lips with tortoise-shell specs or even red with red! It's up to you to figure out which pairing works the best.

To make sure your lipstick is extra bright, use lip liner to make the color resistant to fading and apply two coats of the lipstick, being sure to blot with a tissue in between.
