Do you struggle with flyaways?

Monday, November 19th, 2012

Do you struggle with flyaways? When it comes to making a stunning first impression, having well-maintained and luxurious hair is an important component. Yet, when the winter season gets underway, it can be difficult to keep locks looking their best. From cold winds to blistering snow storms, most women battle the elements by bundling up in scarves and hats – this can lead to the dreaded appearance of flyaways.

If your hair gets static-like after wearing a hat or other woolen material, you don't need to fret. You can guard against this threat with a few simple beauty steps.

For starters, you should invest in quality shampoo products and a silky finish conditioner that will leave your mane voluminous and hydrated. You may not think this matters in the fight against flyaways, but you couldn't be more wrong. By having well-nourished strands, you can prevent a host of follicle foibles, including frizz and flyaways.

Once you're through, you can make your beleaguered locks feel good as new with a non-sticky hairspray that can allow you style your hair into any look you desire. A reliable spray can also keep your strands from going haywire if you slip a hat over your head for a trek outdoors.

One easy trick for creating winged eyeshadow

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Wondering how to get the perfect winged eyeshadow? You know that winged eyeliner is cool, but have you ever considered winging out your eyeshadow? Celebrities and gals everywhere have been experimenting with this look lately, and it's suddenly an awesome trend! It's a little edgy and daring, but with the right outfit and attitude, you're sure to pull it off. Here's how!

According to The Beauty Department, all you have to do is start with a basic smokey eye, which should cover your entire lid – extending out toward the end of your brows. BORGHESE – Shadow Milano Trio can help you achieve the perfect blend of color.

Now grab a makeup removing wipe, or use a cotton ball or pad dipped in a little AHAVA – Time To Clear Eye Make Up Remover. Starting from the corner of your eye, drag the wipe or pad up in a diagonal line toward the end of your eyebrow. This will create a clean edge for your wing. If you want a perfect edge, a cotton swab dipped in the makeup remover will neaten it up.

That's all it takes! But if you want even more drama, the source recommends using the wing shape as a guide for your eyeliner, then create a cat eye.

How to get Keira Knightley’s cat eye look from L.A.’s “Anna Karenina” premiere

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Want to recreate Keira Knightley's look from LA's Keira Knightley is always sporting awesome eye makeup looks, which usually revolve around dark, lashy smokey eyes. But for the Los Angeles premiere of "Anna Karenina," the chic actress switched it up with a very modern, tasteful interpretation of the cat eye. Here's how to do it yourself!

First, grab a black liquid eyeliner and use it to trace a thin line along your upper lash lines. Flick it out past your outer corners, about to the point where your eyebrows end. Then use a bit of gray or brown eyeshadow on your lids to provide depth. Add a hint of highlighter to your inner corners to brighten up your eyes. You don't need to add any liner to your lower lash lines.

Now use a mascara like Too Faced – Lashlight to coat your upper and lower lashes. Apply one coat, brush through them with a comb, then apply another coat and comb one more time. This will make your lashes look extra feathery.

A hint of peach blush, a delicate, light pink lipstick and perfectly groomed brows will complete the effect!

How do you apply your eye cream?

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Are you applying your eye cream correctly? You probably know that eye cream can work wonders on everything that can go wrong in that area, whether it's crow's feet, fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles or puffiness. But if you're not putting it on the right way, you might not be getting all of the benefits. In fact, you could be creating more problems! For example, have you ever woken up with puffy eyes after applying your nightly cream?

Luckily, there are a few simple tips that can help you get the most out of your products. First of all, try storing the container in the fridge. Keeping it cool can help de-puff your under-eye areas right away, and it feels wonderful smoothing it on after a long, rough day.

Next, be sure to apply the cream with your ring finger. This finger is the weakest, so it's best for using on the delicate skin around your eyes, since the light touch won't pull on your skin.

Finally, The Beauty Department recommends putting a product like Exuviance – Hydrating Eye Complex about ½ inch above your upper lash lines and the same distance away from your lower lash lines. The cream will sink in and travel a bit over time, so if you apply it too close to your eyes, it could end up in them, resulting in that dreaded puffiness!

Can you tell the difference between normal skin and sensitive skin?

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Can you tell the difference between normal skin and sensitive skin?Have you ever had a breakout or noticed patches of dry skin around your nose and wondered, "Does this mean I have sensitive skin?"

If so, you're not alone. Sensitive skin can be tough to define and, as a result, is one of the most misdiagnosed conditions in the beauty industry. While products like BABOR – Basic Care Sensitive Cream can be a great resource for those with sensitive complexions, this misunderstood skin dilemma is so confusing, even experts are weighing in.

"It's an overused phrase," Elizabeth Tanzi, M.D., co-director of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery in Washington, D.C, told Allure magazine. "People may be overusing their products, leading to irritation."

One of the best ways to tell if you legitimately have sensitive skin is to test out new products. If foundations, face washes and even blushes cause inflammation and make your skin sting, that's a pretty good sign that you have a sensitive epidermis.

If your skin does become red, something like BORGHESE – Effetto Immediato Spa Soothing Tonic for Sensitive Skin can soothe, condition and re-balance skin for a more luminous appearance.

Three steps to perfectly filled-in brows

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

Filled-in brows are easier to get than you think!Even if you're a pro when it comes to plucking and shaping your brows, you might not have perfectly filled-in arches. After all, you don't have control over where those little hairs grow (or don't grow)! But getting the brows you long for isn't as hard as you think. In fact, it only takes three steps!

1. Outline with brow pencil. Use a brow pencil like BABOR – Maxi Definition Eye Brow Pencil and a straight-edged object to outline the general shape of your brows. The Beauty Department recommends holding the straight edge against all of the sides that make up your brows, then using the liner to trace the edges.

2. Fill in with powder. Now that you have a good shape to work with, shade it in with brow powder, like being TRUE – Brow Definer. Use short strokes in the direction of your brow hairs so it looks as natural as possible.

3. Set with brow gel. Once your brows are outlined and filled in, you can set them with brow gel to ensure that they stay put all day and night. Brush the hairs upward and out for a flattering effect.

Three things you didn’t know about your cosmetics

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

Three things you didn't know about your cosmeticsWhether you just got home from work or you spent the evening partying it up with your best friends at a hotspot in the city, chances are you've got mascara, foundation and other leftover cosmetics still lingering on your visage.

Before you hit the sheets, it's important to remove your makeup – but did you know that there's more to it than simply splashing water on your face? Consider these three facts the next time you're scrubbing your cosmetics away.

1. Each day, your face gets covered by debris. Whether you spend the day outside or just go out your door to grab the paper, your face is greeted with a hailstorm of pollutants each and every day. Between dirt, grime and your cosmetics, your skin can start to feel the pressure in a major way. A granule-free exfoliant can remove dead skin cells on the surface and leave your face feeling softer.

2. Bacteria and fungi live in cosmetics. It's kind of weird to think about, but bacteria – and yes, even fungi – infiltrate your beauty products on a regular basis. Mascara and even skin care creams are susceptible to this, so be check the expiration dates on all your products before you use them.

3. Leftover cosmetics can lead to infections. Sometimes, it's tempting to just hit the hay after a long day out and leave the work of removing makeup for the morning. But did you know that unremoved cosmetics – especially in the sensitive areas around your eyes – can lead to infections? To prevent this, make time every night to remove your makeup with a gentle, oil-free product designed to get rid of even the toughest cosmetics around your peepers.
