Regardless of your habits or genetics, signs of aging are inevitable. While it’s natural for skin to start to sag over time, there are ways to keep it looking supple. Follow these simple tips to defy gravity and give your complexion a lift:
- Exfoliate everywhere. Look for a cleanser that has a built-in exfoliator or a separate solution that can slough off dead skin cells and reveal a more youthful looking layer beneath. Be gentle with your scrubbing though, especially if you have sensitive skin
- Flush out toxins. What you drink and eat can have a major impact on the quality of your skin. SheKnows recommended doing a juice detox to get rid of any impurities in your system – even after several days you’re bound to notice an enhanced glow. Don’t forget to drink at least eight glasses of water a day – hydration is what keeps your skin looking plump.
- Preserve and protect. According to Elle magazine, New York City-based dermatologist Dr. Anne Chapas said that collagen and elastin are the two key components that affect skin’s firmness. Since environmental stressors such as UV rays, pollution and other free radicals break those proteins down, it’s crucial to apply SPF on a daily basis.
- Reach for retinol. Another factor that can destroy collagen and elastin is an increase in enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases. Los Angeles-based dermatologist Dr. Jessica Wu told Allure that applying retinoids or other forms of topical vitamin A can accelerate cell turnover and diminish fine lines while helping to produce new collagen.
