How to prevent your skin from drying out this fall

Friday, August 24th, 2012

Softer skin starts in the shower this fall!During the summer, your skin was probably a lot moister than usual. In fact, it might have been downright greasy! But now that September's creeping up on us and colder weather beckons on the horizon, you'll need to take some preventative measures to ensure that your complexion stays dewy. Here's how.

First, lather up in the shower with a creamy body wash with plenty of moisturizing ingredients that'll strengthen the moisture barrier of your skin and soften rough spots. The temperature of the water shouldn't be too hot, even if you're trying to warm up on a cold fall morning. Hot steam sounds like it'd moisturize, but it actually sucks the moisture from your skin.

Exfoliation is also important, and you should do it once a week to slough off dead skin cells. Use a body scrub, a loofah or a body brush to accomplish this task.

Finally, using a rich body lotion when your skin is still damp after the shower will help seal in the moisture and keep your skin soft all day. If you have trouble remembering, just store the lotion in the shower along with your other products – you'll see it and have no excuse!

Ten bad habits that are ruining your complexion

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Drinking through a straw can create fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth.Even if you’re diligent about sticking to a skincare routine and have a flair for applying makeup flawlessly, you might still be doing your skin a disservice if you’re guilty of any of these bad habits. Take a look at our list – if you ever catch yourself doing any of these activities, cut it out and take action!

1. Skipping sunscreen. You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth repeating. Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin against harmful UV rays that can cause cancer, fine lines, wrinkles and a dull complexion. It’s not hard to apply a product like COOLA – Face SPF 20 Mineral Sunscreen Unscented Moisturizer before your makeup every day, and exposed areas of your body should be coated too. Even on cloudy days and in the winter!

2. Sipping from straws. It seems harmless, but pursing your lips around a straw can set you up for fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth as you age. Skip drinking from them as much as possible, or just be sure not to pucker up when you’re sipping.

3. Ignoring your hands and neck. You might be paying a lot of attention to your face, but the skin on your hands and neck is just as delicate. These areas are just as prone to signs of aging, so treat them with as much care as you do your visage. Slather your face serums and moisturizers onto your neck, then follow up with a hand cream like Philosophy – Pure Grace Hand Lotion.

4. Falling asleep with your makeup on. Not only will your pillowcase get messy, but your pores could become clogged, resulting in breakouts and irritation. If you can’t wash your face before bed, at least use a makeup-removing wipe.

5. Popping your zits. While those whiteheads definitely aren’t doing your face any favors, popping them only makes the problem worse. You could spread the bacteria or create marks that may take a long time to fade. Treat blemishes with acne products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, and keep your hands off!

6. Biting your nails. Not only does this create unattractive fingers, but it can cause infections if you regularly pull hangnails or bite too close to your nail beds. To make your fingernails less tempting to bite, keep them polished with Lippmann Collection – Nail Lacquers and carry a file in your purse to fix breaks that you’d otherwise try to treat with your teeth.

7. Smoking cigarettes. Duh! As if these weren’t bad enough for your health, they also negatively affect the look and feel of your skin, aging your complexion much faster than if you were a non-smoker. Get help quitting – it’s worth it!

8. Eating junk food. People used to think it was a myth that junk food can cause breakouts, but recent scientific research has proven that processed carbohydrates and sugars really can make your acne worse by stimulating oil-producing hormones called androgens, reports Allure Magazine. Eat high-protein foods and whole grains instead, and you should see an improvement in about six weeks.

9. Taking long, hot showers. Yes, it’s very relaxing to unwind in a steamy shower, especially when you have luxurious bath products like the Whish – Lavender Dream Collection, but staying for too long in a shower that’s too hot can dry out your skin, making it blotchy and itchy.

10. Squinting. Your eyes are the features that are most likely to make you look older than you really are if you don’t take care of the skin around them, and squinting is one of the most offensive things you can do to the area. It creates creases, fine lines and wrinkles when done on a regular basis. Always wear sunglasses and use a rich eye cream at night.

Were opaque tights your best friend this winter? Tell them to take a hike. Follow this beauty advice and cool your smooth legs by the pool.

  1. Scrub ‘em: Great legs start in the shower. Exfoliate your legs three times a week and use a moisturizing cleanser.
  2. Soak ‘em: To decrease irritation from shaving, give your legs a chance to soak in the tub or shower. Lather on that shaving cream and get to it!
  3. Love ‘em: Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. And moisturize again. Did we say moisturize? It’s kid of important. Love your legs. Moisturize.
  4. Tan ‘em: A little color goes a long way. Just a little, though – don’t overdo it. There’s no gold medal for being the most bronze.

Three tips to help you nix body acne

Friday, June 1st, 2012

Body acne doesn't have to be a concern this summer! Now that the weather is starting to warm up, you’ll probably be sweating more than you were in the past few months. According to Allure Magazine, the higher temperatures mean you’ll be producing not only more sweat, but more oil, which increases the chance that your pores will become clogged – resulting in body acne. Here are a few ways you can combat the issue.

1. Use a body wash with salicylic acid. Look for one with at least 1.5 percent, like Murad – Acne Body Wash.

2. Exfoliate on a regular basis. Getting rid of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin will prevent them from clogging up your pores and trapping in bacteria, oil and sweat. Every other day or so, use an exfoliant like Dermalogica – Exfoliating Body Scrub.

3. Use a benzoyl peroxide cream. Just like you would on your face, smooth on a thin layer of an acne treatment cream to stop zits in their tracks.

With these tips, you should notice clearer skin in a couple of weeks – and if you start now, you’ll be ready to rock that bathing suit once summer hits!

How to feel more confident in less clothes

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

There's no reason to feel self-conscious when you're wearing a bikini this summer! With summer almost here, you might be staring at your seasonal wardrobe wondering how you’re going to feel pulling off barely-there bikinis, short shorts and skirts. While frequent exercise is a surefire way to feel more confident, there are ways you can boost your mood when you’re wearing skimpy clothes with skincare products. Here are some ideas.

1. Get on the self-tanning train. A hint of color can help hide imperfections and make you look more toned, reports Glamour Magazine’s beauty blog, so pick up a self-tanner like Too Faced – Tanning Bed In A Tube and get to work!

2. Go for shimmer. A hint of sparkle from a body lotion like GloMinerals – Body Glisten will highlight your favorite areas and leave your skin touchably soft. You won’t even remember why you were feeling hesitant about that bathing suit.

3. Stop cellulite in its tracks. Use a body brush before the shower to smooth out your skin and plump up areas with cellulite to reduce the appearance of the dimples. Then, use a firming cream with caffeine all over. Instant tightness!
