What products make up a good skincare regimen?

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

What products should your skincare regimen consist of?If you want gorgeous, glowing skin that’s free of blemishes, fine lines and wrinkles and discoloration, an effective skincare regimen is crucial. But it can be hard to know which products you should be combining for the most effective routine. The products you pick depend largely on your skin type and the concerns you’re trying to treat, but here’s a general guide outlining which products would make up a comprehensive regimen.

Cleanser
A good cleanser for face is the first step in any skincare regimen. It keeps your complexion free of the dirt, oil and environmental pollutants that can cause blemishes and free-radical damage, and it also preps your skin for soaking up the beneficial ingredients in the rest of your routine. If you have oily skin, you’ll want a cleanser that can keep your face matte throughout the day. Those with combination skin should use a mild cleanser that won’t strip away oils or exacerbate dry skin. Ladies with dry or sensitive skin should choose a moisturizing cream cleanser without fragrances or dyes.

Toner
According to the Columbia Daily Tribune, toners for face are largely optional, but they can have skin benefits for certain skin types. These products work by evening out your skin’s pH levels. If your pH balance is off, it could result in a number of ailments, like blemishes, dry patches or shiny skin. Typically, they’re good for those who have oily complexions, whether it’s all over or just on the T-zone. Swipe it over those greasy areas to mattify your visage and purify your pores.

Serum
Not everyone needs serums for face, but they’re some of the most potent skincare products on the market. If you’re looking for anti-aging effects or antioxidants to prevent skin damage, serums are a wonderful way to pack your skin with beneficial ingredients. They absorb quickly and should be worn underneath your moisturizer so they’ll penetrate deep into your visage. Whatever your skincare concerns are, you can bet there’s a serum out there that can help.

Spot treatment
If you get the occasional zit, it’s helpful to have acne treatment products on hand to use as a spot treatment. When used after cleansing and before moisturizing, benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid treatments can clear up breakouts and minimize the appearance of pimples in no time.

Moisturizer
Face moisturizers are essential, even if you think your skin doesn’t need any more hydrating because it’s already oily. In fact, the reason for your oily skin might be because your skin is dry and your pores are overcompensating. Moisturizers help form a protective barrier over your skin that prevents hydration from escaping. You might want to pick up a light moisturizer for day and a richer, creamier moisturizer for night. Always apply it right after cleansing your skin – it’ll soak in better if your face is still slightly damp. For added protection, use moisturizers with SPF to prevent sunburns and photoaging.

Exfoliant
Regular exfoliation is necessary to slough off dead skin cells and prevent blocked pores. It also reveals fresh, radiant skin cells underneath, which is always a plus. Scrubs and exfoliants for face should be used a couple of times a week, and you should never scrub too hard, which could damage your skin. Sensitive skin types should look for the gentlest products available. On days when you exfoliate, you might want to skip using products that have ingredients that may be drying, like those in your serum or toner.

Masque
Face masques are another way to treat specific skincare issues, whether it’s redness, dryness, acne or oiliness. Once a week or so, slather these products on your face after cleansing, then leave them on for the recommended amount of time before rinsing with lukewarm water. From there, you can go about your regular routine as usual.

How to prevent your skin from drying out this fall

Friday, August 24th, 2012

Softer skin starts in the shower this fall!During the summer, your skin was probably a lot moister than usual. In fact, it might have been downright greasy! But now that September's creeping up on us and colder weather beckons on the horizon, you'll need to take some preventative measures to ensure that your complexion stays dewy. Here's how.

First, lather up in the shower with a creamy body wash with plenty of moisturizing ingredients that'll strengthen the moisture barrier of your skin and soften rough spots. The temperature of the water shouldn't be too hot, even if you're trying to warm up on a cold fall morning. Hot steam sounds like it'd moisturize, but it actually sucks the moisture from your skin.

Exfoliation is also important, and you should do it once a week to slough off dead skin cells. Use a body scrub, a loofah or a body brush to accomplish this task.

Finally, using a rich body lotion when your skin is still damp after the shower will help seal in the moisture and keep your skin soft all day. If you have trouble remembering, just store the lotion in the shower along with your other products – you'll see it and have no excuse!

Ten bad habits that are ruining your complexion

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Drinking through a straw can create fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth.Even if you’re diligent about sticking to a skincare routine and have a flair for applying makeup flawlessly, you might still be doing your skin a disservice if you’re guilty of any of these bad habits. Take a look at our list – if you ever catch yourself doing any of these activities, cut it out and take action!

1. Skipping sunscreen. You’ve heard it before, but it’s worth repeating. Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin against harmful UV rays that can cause cancer, fine lines, wrinkles and a dull complexion. It’s not hard to apply a product like COOLA – Face SPF 20 Mineral Sunscreen Unscented Moisturizer before your makeup every day, and exposed areas of your body should be coated too. Even on cloudy days and in the winter!

2. Sipping from straws. It seems harmless, but pursing your lips around a straw can set you up for fine lines and wrinkles around your mouth as you age. Skip drinking from them as much as possible, or just be sure not to pucker up when you’re sipping.

3. Ignoring your hands and neck. You might be paying a lot of attention to your face, but the skin on your hands and neck is just as delicate. These areas are just as prone to signs of aging, so treat them with as much care as you do your visage. Slather your face serums and moisturizers onto your neck, then follow up with a hand cream like Philosophy – Pure Grace Hand Lotion.

4. Falling asleep with your makeup on. Not only will your pillowcase get messy, but your pores could become clogged, resulting in breakouts and irritation. If you can’t wash your face before bed, at least use a makeup-removing wipe.

5. Popping your zits. While those whiteheads definitely aren’t doing your face any favors, popping them only makes the problem worse. You could spread the bacteria or create marks that may take a long time to fade. Treat blemishes with acne products with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, and keep your hands off!

6. Biting your nails. Not only does this create unattractive fingers, but it can cause infections if you regularly pull hangnails or bite too close to your nail beds. To make your fingernails less tempting to bite, keep them polished with Lippmann Collection – Nail Lacquers and carry a file in your purse to fix breaks that you’d otherwise try to treat with your teeth.

7. Smoking cigarettes. Duh! As if these weren’t bad enough for your health, they also negatively affect the look and feel of your skin, aging your complexion much faster than if you were a non-smoker. Get help quitting – it’s worth it!

8. Eating junk food. People used to think it was a myth that junk food can cause breakouts, but recent scientific research has proven that processed carbohydrates and sugars really can make your acne worse by stimulating oil-producing hormones called androgens, reports Allure Magazine. Eat high-protein foods and whole grains instead, and you should see an improvement in about six weeks.

9. Taking long, hot showers. Yes, it’s very relaxing to unwind in a steamy shower, especially when you have luxurious bath products like the Whish – Lavender Dream Collection, but staying for too long in a shower that’s too hot can dry out your skin, making it blotchy and itchy.

10. Squinting. Your eyes are the features that are most likely to make you look older than you really are if you don’t take care of the skin around them, and squinting is one of the most offensive things you can do to the area. It creates creases, fine lines and wrinkles when done on a regular basis. Always wear sunglasses and use a rich eye cream at night.
