The 6 Days of Beauty

Of course you’re focusing on buying for your loved ones this holiday season, but that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a little reward, too. In fact, all the stress of the holiday season means you need some TLC now more than ever. While perusing the seemingly endless amount of hair and makeup products out there, how do you know which ones are best for you? Picking out a gift for yourself can be just as difficult as choosing one for someone else in your life. The fact is, the world of beauty is a complex one, and when you’re more educated about what different products can do, you can better harness the power they provide. You may need a few lessons before you buy new items.

Enter: The 6 Days of Beauty. Beginning this week, Beauty Bridge will begin sending out a series of emails with informative tips and tricks from head to toe. Worried that all your heat hair styling will cause frazzled ends? Wondering how to perfect a smoldering smoky eye? Curious about what bath elixirs will put you in a more tranquil state? Each one of these emails will provide you with advice and helpful recommendations so that not only can you choose ideal products for your needs, but you can use them to their maximum advantage.

Here’s a glimpse at what you’ll learn about:

Day 1: Perfect Winter Hair Products
Wintertime doesn’t just mean inclement weather – the frigid temperatures and dry air can cause a host of problems for your hair. That means that it’s time to switch up your hair products when the seasons change. Still, what kind of conditioner will give your tresses the moisture they so desperately need? What hair sprays can eliminate flyaways from your static-provoking hats? How do you protect your locks from damage when you’re flat ironing them into a sleek ‘do for a holiday soirée? It’s nearly impossible to navigate the world of winter hair products without a little assistance, which is why the first series is focused on this subject.

Every day should be a good hair day. Armed with some new knowledge about which solutions can best protect your hair through the coldest season, your strands are sure to shine.

Day 2: Dreamy, Sultry, Sparkling Eyes
With the shimmering snowfall outside and sequined party dresses all around, it’s natural to gravitate toward more sparkly makeup. However, glittery eyes require the right tools and tactics to work. If you’re aiming to amp up the glitz factor this season, the second installment of the 6 Days of Beauty is made for you. The key to getting an eye-catching look is to combine hues that complement one another, and apply them with precise techniques. It may not sound easy, but with the information provided in the 2nd Day of Beauty, achieving this kind of dramatic impact with your eye makeup will become second nature.

This series will equip you with the information you need to achieve anything from a subtle shimmery eye to a dramatic metallic smoky eye in mere minutes. That means it’s definitely a must for all your upcoming holiday bashes and events.

Day 3: Winter Skin Care Products
Just as you change up your wardrobe during the winter, you need to do the same for your skincare regimen. The proper combination of skincare products is crucial for protecting your skin from the harsh winter air. After all, flakes may be pretty during a snowfall, but they’re not so attractive on your skin. Whether you have dry skin or an oily complexion, picking ideal products for your type can ensure you don’t run into problems that wreak havoc on your appearance. In fact, some skincare products are specifically designed to alleviate the issues that inevitably arise during the winter.

This installment is designed to aid you in both selecting solutions that will address your specific concerns, as well as advise you about when and how to apply them. There’s no reason to forfeit your glow just because it’s no longer summer.

Day 4: Irresistible, Sensual Scents
Scent is a powerful sense: It has the ability to make you instantly more magnetic, even in a crowded room, and also make you far more memorable, even long after you’ve met someone. Are you looking to switch your scent for something a little more alluring this season? The realm of fragrances isn’t always easy to navigate. With so many different combinations of notes, it can be difficult to choose one. That’s why on the 4th Day of Beauty, we decided to give you a lesson on aromas. From feminine floral fragrances with passionate fruity undertones to woodsy scents with seductive amber and vanilla, there are a vast array of options at your disposal.

Maybe you want a rollerball to tote with you on the go, or perhaps you want to take the plunge with a full sized bottle of a new fragrance. If you find a scent you like, you may even consider going all out with a gift package that contains a lotion and a body wash in your preferred aroma. Either way, with our help, you’ll find a scent that keeps you smelling heavenly all through the season.

Day 5: Men Need Grooming
It’s time to face facts: men need to invest in certain beauty products, too. Of course, most guys will spend far less time in front of the mirror than girls do, but that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be mindful of the skincare and shaving products they use. In fact, men often face a lot more issues with their skin due to a higher testosterone level, meaning they’re more likely to battle blackheads and breakouts. Plus, shaving ushers in a host of other concerns, such as razor bumps. Fortunately, no man has to suffer through these issues. With the right products and practices, any guy can make sure their complexion is clear. Additionally, as men grow older, they may begin to notice a few wrinkles and fine lines begin to form. While this is an inevitable part of aging, there are particular products that can help to reverse these effects to help you restore your youth.

If you’re a guy who takes pride in the way you look, you’ll definitely benefit from the 5th Day of Beauty. Whether it’s softer, fuller hair you’re seeking or a smoother shave, there is a wealth of information in this installment to help you achieve your ideal appearance.

Day 6: Soothing and Relaxing Bath Products
Between running around from store to store for all your holiday shopping to hosting festive events, things can certainly get a little hectic during this season. That’s why it’s more important than ever to set aside a little “me time.” There’s something to be said for indulging in a relaxing bath after a long, stressful day. Not only can you alleviate some of the built up tension that negatively impacts your health, but you can also recharge your perspective so you’re in a better mood.

So which bath products will most help to calm your mind and body? Wait for the 6th and final Day of Beauty email to find out.

What gift will you get Dad this Father’s Day?

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

What will you get your dad this Father's Day?Even though Mother’s Day tends to overshadow the holiday devoted to dads everywhere, celebrating Father’s Day this June 17 with a thoughtful gift is still a good way to show your father that you’re grateful for all he’s done for you. But what will you get him? Some dads seem to have everything they could possibly want! Here are several ideas to help you decide on the perfect present this Father’s Day.

1. Tickets to see his favorite sports team. Whether it’s for a baseball game this summer or a football game next season, chances are your dad will love the opportunity to watch his favorite team play. Get two tickets so you, Mom or a friend can accompany him for the perfect day out.

2. A deluxe shaving kit like eShave – Start Up Kit. It comes with a genuine badger brush, which exfoliates, softens and raises the hair for a shave that’s as close as possible. The set also includes a pre-shave oil, shave cream and after shave cream, all in a convenient black travel bag. Stubble will be a thing of the past for your dapper dad!

3. A home brewing kit. Does your father have a taste for cold, delicious brews? Instead of taking him out for a night at the local brewery, get your dad everything he needs to create his own ale. A couple of beer mugs to go with the set will ensure that he’ll be able to taste his masterpiece in style.

4. Anti-aging skincare products like Jack Black – Line Smoother Face Moisturizer. If your dad has started to complain about the fact that he’s getting older, a few choice skincare products to combat fine lines, wrinkles and age spots might be just the thing to lift his spirits. Lightweight and oil-free, your dad will barely notice that he’s wearing this moisturizer – until he starts seeing results!

5. The latest gadget. If you have siblings who can help you buy a splurge-worthy item for Dad, why not get him up-to-date on the latest technologies? Whether he’s into computers, eBooks, cameras, smartphones, mp3 players or television, there’s likely a new product out that he’d love to get his hands on.

6. A classic yet cool tie. If you think your father could use a bit of direction when it comes to his fashion tastes, you might be doing him a favor by providing him with a go-to tie to wear for special occasions. Choose one that complements his personality and favorite color scheme so he’ll always look dashing.

7. A new fragrance, like RALPH LAUREN – Polo For Men Eau de Toilette Spray. If your dad doesn’t have a signature scent to call his own, he’d likely jump at the chance to impress your mom with a manly new cologne.

8. Tools to help him get his grill on. If your dad considers himself the master of the grill, a few new accessories designed to help him make the most of his skills might be the perfect present. Spatulas, serving plates, aprons, marinades and spices are all fair game.

9. A beach kit. If your dad enjoys nothing more than a relaxing day by the shore, a beach kit might be a great idea. A brand new cooler, a plush towel, a new swimsuit and a sunblock like Dermalogica – Daily Defense Block SPF15 are all good choices that he’ll get a lot of use out of.

10. A poker set. Does your father like to get together with his guy friends every now and then for a game of poker? If he doesn’t already have his own set of chips and a table to play on, you can bring the party to his house by supplying him with all the goods.

10 beauty updates to get you ready for the summer season

Monday, May 7th, 2012

Do you have your summer beauty essentials yet?For many people, Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer season, which means you might soon be gearing up for barbecues, beach outings, poolside gatherings or other warm-weather activities. Because you’ll likely be showing off more skin, it might be necessary to update your beauty regimen to ensure that you’re looking your best. Here are several ways you can take your look from spring to summer in no time at all!

1. Go for a brighter nail polish. Pretty pastels are perfect for spring, but summer calls for bold, vibrant shades that will get your digits some serious attention. Lippmann Collection – Nail Lacquers has a variety of eye-catching hues that will be sure to match your colorful summer fashions and accessories. Look for citrusy shades like orange, yellow and lime green, or branch into fuchsia, teal or magenta territory.

2. Choose a lighter fragrance. Perfumes tend to smell stronger in the heat, which means you’ll likely need a lighter scent to carry you through the summer months. Juicy Couture – Viva La Juicy For Women Eau de Parfum Spray might be the perfect choice, as it’s full of wildberry, honeysuckle, mandarin, gardenia and jasmine notes.

3. Switch to a tinted moisturizer. If your skin’s clear, you probably don’t need the heavy coverage that foundation provides. Instead of thick formulas that can melt off or cake up in the heat, use a tinted moisturizer like Dermalogica – Sheer Tint Moisture SPF 15. It’ll protect your face while offering light coverage to ensure an even complexion.

4. Stock up on blotting papers. When you’re outside in the sun, you’re likely to get a bit sweaty and oily, which means blotting papers are a must. Jane Iredale – Facial Blotting Papers will soak up that excess moisture without smudging your makeup, and they come in a chic gold case that’ll fit right into your beach bag!

5. Upgrade your hairstyle. Whether it’s chopping off a few inches, lightening up your color or experimenting with trendy neon highlights, your hair could definitely use a change for summertime. Whichever style you choose, be sure to pick up haircare products that meet your tresses’ needs.

6. Go bronze. To give your skin a healthy glow without putting it at risk for sun damage, get a bronzer to enhance your complexion. Too Faced – Caribbean in a Compact is a great choice that will have you looking a bit tanner in no time. Just dust it onto the areas of your face that would naturally darken in the sun – like your cheekbones, forehead and nose.

7. Banish cellulite. There’s nothing like cellulite to make you feel uncomfortable in your short shorts, miniskirts and bathing suits. Luckily, products like BABOR – Body Line Thermal STOP3 Cellulite Gel can help improve the appearance of your cellulite-prone areas. It might also help to dry brush the area before each shower and use an exfoliant with caffeine to improve blood flow to the area.

8. Pick up a vibrant lipstick. For balmy nights out, there’s nothing like a bright pout to amp up your look. Try BORGHESE – B Moisture Advanced Care Lipcolour in Pinkissima or Apricotta. Make it matte with translucent powder or shiny with a clear lip gloss.

9. Achieve touchable legs. Use MOOM – Express Pre Waxed Strips for Legs & Body to get smooth, soft legs that are free of razor burn. Moisturize afterward for extra hydration.

10. Sunblock. You know you’ll need it – so stock up on a great SPF product that’s long-lasting and provides full coverage.

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

Could your mom use a bit of pampering this Mother's Day?Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and this year you might be looking for something a little different than the usual flowers or gift certificate. If your mom loves a good pampering every now and then, it might be a great idea to get her all stocked up with her favorite beauty products. Here are a few that are worth gifting, as well as several other not-your-average gift ideas.

1. An anti-aging spa set like Murad – The Power of Pomegranate Body Spa Set. This kit harnesses the antioxidant power of pomegranates in an energizing body wash, body polish and body cream. It’ll transform your mother’s everyday shower into an invigorating experience that will restore her skin’s moisture, wash away impurities and reveal glowing, youthful skin. What mom wouldn’t want that?

2. A spa candle. There’s nothing like turning your home into a tranquil retreat, and chances are your mom would jump at the opportunity. If you think she could use a bit of help in the spa decor department, a candle like BABOR – Baborganic Wellness Candle might be just the thing. This fragrant piece of decor not only smells delicious, but the melted wax can be used as a luxurious massage balm. Bonus!

3. A natural skincare oil. Oils are all the rage these days, as they can help skin in a variety of ways, whether it’s anti-aging benefits, cleansing or hydration. Pick your mom up a bottle of something like grapeseed oil, marula oil or argan oil so she can quench her skin. Kneipp – Jasmine & Argan Oil Body Oil is a great choice with relaxing aromatherapy.

4. A new fragrance. If your mom doesn’t already have a signature scent, it might be time to help her find one. Whether you buy her a set of a few different scents, like Sula – Beach Beauty Playering Set (Sun-Kissed Citrus & Vanilla Blossom), or one with multiple products in the same scent, like ISSEY MIYAKE – A Scent by Issey Miyake For Women Gift Set, you can rest assured knowing that she’ll love it.

5. A makeup palette. If your mom likes makeup but never seems to know the best ways to combine shades, a makeup kit like Youngblood – Mineral Basics Collection might be a great idea. She’ll be able to find the exact shades for her skintone for a look that’s pure perfection. If she already has a great foundation, something like GloMinerals – gloSpring Essentials Kit will give her all of the eyeshadow and blush shades of the season.

6. A travel skincare kit. If your mom is constantly traveling and often spends a weekend away, a travel kit will ensure that she’s not sacrificing her skincare routine. BABOR – PERFECT COMBINATION Travel Set comes with a cleansing oil, a day cream, a night cream, an eye serum and a face serum to give her a flawless complexion on-the-go.

7. A manicure kit. If your mom loves to get her nails done, she’ll definitely appreciate having all of the tools necessary to make it happen. Buy her a chic set of polishes like Nailtini – Mini Bar – Year-Round Party Circuit Nail Cocktail Collection, then stock up on an assortment of nail files, cotton balls, removers and anything else that would make for a great mani or pedi.

8. A hair care kit. If your mother is all about having great hair, chances are she’ll go wild for a kit like Hamadi – ECO Pac To Go. With ginger soymilk hair wash, shea rice milk conditioner and a healing serum, she’ll have everything she needs to achieve healthy tresses.

Beauty mistakes to avoid at all costs

Friday, February 24th, 2012

You won't have to worry about making any more mistakes with these tips!Even the most glamorous celebrities commit fashion and beauty atrocities on occasion. If A-listers can go wrong on the red carpet, there's a chance that all women are guilty of making beauty errors every now and then. Here are a few common mistakes that many ladies make, and ways you can fix the problem.

1. Using the wrong color of foundation. According to Glamour Magazine's beauty blog, this is one of the worst beauty crimes you can commit. Too dark of a shade can make you look dirty, while too light a color can wash out your complexion and give you a ghostly appearance. The news source suggests taking a picture of yourself wearing the foundation with the flash on. This should give you an idea of how you really look in the color. A loose mineral foundation like TRUE Cosmetics – Protective Mineral Foundation SPF 17 Powder might help you avoid applying too much.

2. Applying conditioner all over your hair. Many women use conditioner like shampoo, starting at the top of their heads and working their way down. However, Real Simple Magazine reports that doing this is not only wasting product, but can make your hair appear flat and greasy. That's because it's the end of your strands that get damaged and dry – not your roots. Use a conditioner like June Jacobs – Citrus Clarifying Conditioner, starting near your ears and working your way to the ends of your locks.

3. Using too much fragrance. It's normal to become desensitized to the smell of your own perfume after wearing it so frequently, but that doesn't mean other people can't smell it. Allure Magazine recommends limiting your spritzes to three sprays for an eau de parfum and four for an eau de toilette. Try Calvin Klein – Euphoria Blossom Eau de Toilette Spray.

4. Wearing the same shade of eyeshadow up to your brows. This is truly a beauty "don't." Glamour Magazine suggests stopping at or slightly above your creases with a shadow like Jane Iredale – PurePressed Eye Shadow. Use a darker color to add depth in that area, then add a lighter color to your brow bones.

5. Overplucking your eyebrows. Real Simple Magazine suggests that many women do this because they're standing too close to their mirrors. Being that close allows you to see every single stray hair, but it doesn't let you see the big picture, meaning you can't keep track of the overall shape of your brows. To fix this problem, simply step back after plucking a few hairs to ensure that your brows are still proportional to your face.

6. Orange self-tanner. Many women think layering on the self-tanner will give them a deeper tan, but oftentimes it simply gets too dark and becomes fake looking. Allure Magazine suggests going only a shade or two darker than your actual skin tone, and mixing moisturizer into the self-tanner if you're worried it'll be too dark. Try using Fake Bake – Original Self-Tan Lotion, which is designed for easy application.

7. Attacking breakouts full-force. If you've ever gotten a pimple, chances are you attacked it with products and kept reapplying hoping that they would work faster to get rid of it. However, Real Simple Magazine points out that doing this can burn your skin, creating redness, dryness and irritation that's even uglier than the breakout. That's because the ingredients in many products continue working all day, so overuse gives your skin too much. Follow the directions on the product to avoid having this happen. Jane Iredale – Disappear could help.

Tips for applying perfume

Monday, January 30th, 2012

There's a right way and a wrong way to apply perfume!Fragrance seems like it would be a no-brainer to apply – just spritz on and you're done, right? Wrong. Perfumes can be pretty sensitive and are best applied strategically, according to BellaSugar. Next time you want to smell your best, consider these tips for application.

First, you should never put perfume on top of any kind of lotion or skincare oil. Scents like Juicy Couture – Viva La Juicy For Women Eau de Parfum Spray can interact with moisturizers and result in some pretty funky smells that you probably didn't count on wearing.

Also, it's never a good idea to rub your scented wrists together, even though this is pretty much the stereotypical way to apply perfume. Doing so can crush the fragrance molecules and alter the scent of the spray. It will also fade faster throughout the day.

Finally, be sure not to overdo it. Eau de parfums are more concentrated than sprays like Archipelago Botanicals – Pomegranate Eau de Toilette, which is okay to spritz generously on your body. You don't want to offend the noses of anyone you're near with too much perfume.

How much perfume is too much?

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

How much perfume is too much?Wearing perfume makes many women feel sexy and confident, and wearing cologne can make any man feel powerful and seductive. However, some people are sensitive to scents and can't handle being around someone who's wearing too much. Recently, New Hampshire even proposed a bill that would ban state employees from wearing perfume at work. So how much is too much?

As you've probably noticed, wearing the same perfume day after day can desensitize your nose to it. As a result, you may start to put more on so you can catch a whiff. Avoid doing this by putting on the same amount every day, whether you can smell it or not, or choose a new perfume for a while, like RALPH LAUREN – Romance For Women Eau de Parfum Spray.

If you do end up wearing a bit too much and happen to get a few comments, you can always make the scent less intense by layering a bit of unscented moisturizer over the areas you spritzed. COOLA – Total Body SPF 30 Unscent is a good choice.

Bring in 2012 with a few beauty resolutions

Monday, December 19th, 2011

Make a few of these New Year's beauty resolutions! There’s nothing quite like New Years to bring out the best in people. Everyone wants to start off the new year afresh, whether it means amping up your workout routine, vowing to cut down on your chocolate intake or even to take a few more risks in life. If you’re already creating a list of resolutions for 2012, you might want to include a few beauty-related tasks to ensure that your skin, nails, hair and body get the treatment they deserve. Here are some ideas to consider, inspired by The Beauty Department.

1. Wear sunscreen. Every. Single. Day. Although many women have been bombarded by the media when it comes to how damaging the sun’s rays are, that hasn’t stopped some from skipping the sunscreen. Ensure the protection of your skin by slathering it on in the morning as part of your routine – not just before you’re going to the beach. Makeup like Dermablend – Cover Creme SPF 30 will ensure that you’re getting coverage in more ways than one.

2. Fake it, don’t bake it. If you’re still heading to the tanning bed to get your glow on, cut it out already! Tanning beds are no safer than the sun, and some experts argue that they can do even more damage since you’re receiving direct exposure. Get a faux bronze look by using self-tanners like TanTowel – Self-Tan Towelette. These make the application process a breeze and they won’t leave any tell-tale streaks.

3. Exfoliate at least once a week. Getting rid of dead skin cells is the key to a glowing complexion that’s not dull or flaky. Use an exfoliating scrub for your face once or twice a week, and a rich scrub for your body in the shower. Get Fresh – SPA Sugar Body Scrub is the perfect treat.

4. Find your signature scent. There’s nothing like a fresh fragrance to remind people of you even when you’re not around, but it’s not possible if you’re always switching up your perfume. Take the time to find out what smells best on you, then invest in a few different products in the scent to ensure that you’re always exuding the aroma.

5. Don’t go to sleep without taking off your makeup. Leaving makeup on while you’re in bed at night is never a good idea. Your pores can become clogged, leading to acne, irritation and an overall messy complexion. Even if you’re too tired to wash it all off, keep a stash of wipes near your bed and use it to gently remove any product. Rilastil – Daily Care Make-Up Removing Wipes are the perfect thing.

6. Clean out your collection. Now’s the perfect time to go through your medicine cabinet, makeup bag and toiletry stash and get rid of anything old. Most products have an expiration date on them, but if you can’t remember when you got it, it’s definitely worth tossing. Expired products won’t work as well and could cause problems for your skin if you continue to use them.

7. Embrace your hair’s natural texture. Your strands could use a break from heat tools every now and then, so you should become comfortable with your hair’s natural state. That doesn’t mean you have to skip products altogether – a great anti-frizz serum like Leonor Greyl – Serum de Soie Sublimateur can do wonders.

8. Stop biting your nails. Every now and then, we all slip up and go to town nibbling that pesky jagged edge or hangnail – but you have to stop! Carry a nail file in your bag for on-the-go fixes and keep your nails polished and cute so you won’t feel the urge to bite them.

As long as you incorporate some or all of these beauty resolutions, 2012 should be your most beautiful year yet!
