According to MSNBC's Today, a recent study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that teenagers who suffer from acne are up to three times more likely to have thoughts of depression and suicide than those with smooth skin.
"These kids have double the risk of having mental problems," said study researcher Jon Halvorsen, professor of dermatology at the University of Oslo. "There is undertreatment of acne in teens, and this shows it's important not to delay seeking treatment."
Halvorsen added that health care systems and schools should recognize the ramifications of acne, and that teens should be encouraged to seek treatment.
While there are medications that can be prescribed to combat acne, those suffering from the skin condition can also use topical treatments.
Allure magazine recommends using a cleanser twice a day that contains 2 percent salicylic acid or 3 percent glycolic acid, like Peter Thomas Roth Glycolic Acid 3% Facial Wash, and then, once a day, applying a formula that boasts at least 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide, such as Dermalogica mediBac Special Clearing Booster.

New study reveals teens with acne more likely to think of suicide
Wednesday, October 13th, 2010Everyday beauty products that can multi-task
Thursday, September 30th, 2010
While there are a seemingly limitless amount of products available formulated to treat almost every condition under the sun, there are times when you may need a quick fix. Luckily, there are a few standard beauty products that can do double-duty in a last minute emergency.
Running out of shaving cream can be especially frustrating, as you usually don’t realize it needs to be replaced until you reach to use it in the shower. Instead of skipping the shave, simply lather your legs with conditioner.
“[Conditioner has] moisturizing ingredients should help the razor glide over your skin smoothly and help avoid razor burn,” Marie Claire reports.
If you’ve used up your acne treatment and have yet to purchase more, toothpaste can save the day, as dabbing a bit of the product on a blemish will dry out the imperfection. However, make sure not to use a whitening toothpaste. According to the news source, these formulas contain hydrogen peroxide, which can irritate skin.
Additionally, some products can even be used to prevent a beauty emergency. Many people experience an eczema outbreak on their stomachs caused by an allergic reaction to the nickel in the button on their jeans. To protect against this itchy condition, the news provider recommends painting the back of the button with a coat of clear nail polish.
Simple solutions to treating acne
Thursday, September 30th, 2010
While women are often told how to eliminate pesky pimples on their faces, it may be harder to find decent tips on eliminating acne on one’s back, or bacne, as it’s more commonly known. Luckily, Allure.com recently gathered some helpful information that may help gals with this skin condition.
“Half of the problem for skin in that area is that it’s just plain hard to reach to apply any creams,” the news source reports. However, fighting bacne is not a lost cause.
According to the news provider, ladies should look for a product that contains benzoyl peroxide, as peroxide kills the bacteria. Dermalogica mediBac Special Clearing Booster is a five percent benzoyl peroxide concentrate formulated for the topical treatment of breakouts.
Once skin has absorbed the product, treat the area with an acne-fighting toner, such as SkinMedica Acne Treatment Toner, to keep out bacteria that may form later in the day.
However, since bacne is in such a hard to reach area, the news provider recommends a few ways to successfully put on the products. A spatula can be used to easily apply the benzoyl peroxide formula to one’s back, and toner can be poured into a spray bottle for an extra-easy application.
Tips to treating acne on your back
Thursday, August 19th, 2010
While some people think that acne is confined to one’s face, the skin condition can actually wreak havoc on one’s entire body. Bacne, a term used to refer to acne that resides on one’s back, can be especially hard to fight, as the blemishes are located in such a hard-to-reach location.
However, fighting the skin imperfections doesn’t have to be a struggle, as long as you are equipped with the right products and a bit of inside knowledge.
Annet King, director of global education of The International Dermal Institute, recently shared some tips with Total Beauty about treating bacne. Beware of over-cleansing skin with harsh solutions and scrubbing tools, and instead stick to using one product formulated to fight acne.
Loofahs can irritate skin and worsen the condition, the website reports, so use a gentle body scrub and lightly massage the product into your skin using your hands.
When selecting your body wash, Allure.com recommends using a medicated body wash with salicylic acid, such as Murad Acne Body Wash or Peter Thomas Roth Blemish Buffing Beads Body Wash.
You can also use facial treatments on your body, but the news source suggests that you may want to steer clear of wipes that boast benzoyl peroxide, as the chemical can bleach clothing.
New study finds link between acne and smoking in women
Thursday, July 22nd, 2010
While the causes of acne have been attributed to a number of factors, from stress to diet to hormones, new research reveals a correlation between smoking and comedonal adult acne in women.
The study, published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, reports that 226 women with acne, ages 25 to 50, were assessed by dermatologists. They found that 85 percent of the patients were classified as having comedonal post-adolescent acne, and of those 192 women, 72.9 percent were smokers.
“The findings will affect our treatments, and we will need more products with Vitamin A and alpha and beta hydroxyl-acids to clear the skin along with exfoliating products, as well as more education for the public at large about the damaging effects smoking can have on the body’s largest organ, the skin,” Dr Marcy Street, a dermatologist in East Lansing, Michigan, told StyleList.com.
Women who suffer from adult acne should consider using products to help treat their condition. Peter Thomas Roth Beta Hydroxy Acid 2% Acne Wash is an oil-free formula that gently exfoliates the entire face, while Exuviance Blemish Treatment Gel, which contains Vitamin A and salicylic acid, can be used on specific problem areas.
Treat acne without anyone knowing!
Sunday, December 6th, 2009Everyone gets blemishes at some point or another. For those of us that are penny conscious, some over the counter treatments are just as high-quality as those costly ones. To conceal acne and treat it at the same time, try using an acne care that comes in several shades for all skin tones – it will work as a treatment while covering like a concealer! Put a minor amount on finger and dab on blemish, do not overdue! You don’t want to see a “cover-spot” on your face. Blend by dabbing over pimple gently. Simply use 2-3 times daily and remember to cleanse, tone, and moisturize twice a day to keep skin in great condition.
Sticking to a Skin Care Schedule
Wednesday, October 29th, 2008People who have done well using a combination of prescription medications and quality skin care products have stuck to a regime and used their medications as directed by their doctors. By doing so, enabled their prescription medications to do the job they were created to do, and reduced the likelihood of side effects.
It’s best to wait 10 to 15 minutes after cleansing your face before applying topical acne treatment. If you’ve waited but see redness, drying, or peeling, the irritation may be caused by your cleanser. Try to use only alcohol free products. Always use a gentle cleanser–one that feels non-abrasive and does not contain alcohol–on your face and other acne-prone areas, including your back. Using a noncomedogenic moisturizer (one that won’t clog pores) immediately after applying the treatment can reduce redness, drying and peeling. Acne doesn’t clear up overnight. After 3 to 4 weeks, expect to see about a 40% improvement.
It takes 4 to 6 months to see significant improvement but worth the time and energy you put into it.
Where Did That Blemish Come From?
Thursday, March 22nd, 2007It’s happened to the best of us, we’ve gone to sleep with clear skin and woken up with a horrible blemish. Ever wonder where those pesky pimples come from?
A pimple forms when a type of oil called sebum, that lubricates the hair and skin, clogs the pores. As a result an infection occurs and red irritations form. Acne is most common in teenagers, especially during puberty (during this time the hormones become overactive and the skin creates excessive amounts of sebum). However, it can and will affect people of all ages.
Before investing in acne care, identify your problem areas. The most common problem area is called the T-zone and it consists of the chin, nose, and forehead. These areas contain the most oil-producing glands and therefore are prone to breakouts. Every person’s skin is different and trouble spots will vary.
Once you have identified yours, invest in some quality skin care products.
Three Step Treatment of Large Pores
Thursday, September 28th, 2006The best way to free skin of large pores is to begin a three step cleansing skin care regime. First, cleanse with either a Cleansing Cream or Cleansing gel that will get rid of the dirt, dead skin cells and make-up that are inside and on top of your pores. The second, and very important step in the reduction of pore size is to use a Toner without Alcohol. Follow this phase with a moisturizer with Vitamins A and E. These ingredients encourage healing and are especially good for people prone to acne. Once a week after you cleanse, use a treatment exfoliator. Follow the exfoliator with a good Toner and Moisturizer.
Treat Your Problematic Skin with Mineral Cosmetics
Friday, August 25th, 2006Problematic skin? No problem! Natural mineral makeup is okay for all skin types. Mineral cosmetics are non-acnegenic, and won’t irritate acne-prone skin or cause it to worsen. In a lot of cases women with acne-affected complexions claimed that with consistent use of mineral makeup made their skin clear up. Likewise, mineral cosmetics are usually recommended for oily skin—due to the fact that mineral cosmetics have intrinsic oil-absorbing properties.
