The Beauty of Cleansing Oils

The Beauty of Cleansing OilsAny beautician will attest to the benefits of cleansing oils for skin care. They contain a broad range of healthy antioxidants, can relieve specific skin conditions and have incredible moisturizing properties. They are also exceptional for cleaning skin without clogging pores, a serious issue with most soaps and other cleansing products.

Methods for Cleansing with Oil

  1. Select an oil suited to your skin type.
  2. Run yourself a nice steamy bath and get a clean wash cloth.
  3. Place eight to 10 drops in your palm and rub it carefully between the palms to warm the cleansing oil.
  4. Massage the oil thoroughly into the skin. You want to remove all traces of sebum and makeup impurities. Perform the act for no less than two minutes.
  5. Dip the wash cloth into the steamy water. Do not ring out water. Instead drape it across your face.
  6. After the wash cloth cools, gently pat away excess oil.
  7. Repeat the process up to five times or until your skin feels clear of oil and impurities.
  8. Tone and moisturize.

Choosing a Cleansing Oil

Talk with a beautician or other skin care specialist about how to determine what cleansing oil is best for your situation. Still, here are a few of the best oil cleansers and moisturizers for cleaning skin and effectively combatting issues like acne.

Argan Cleansing Oil

Besides not clogging pores, argan oil is a sound solution for preventing stretch marks and restoring skin elasticity, rehydrating skin and regenerating skin cells. It’s helpful in the reduction of brown spots and acne. It also provides a healthy dose of Vitamin E, which is great for skin care.

Coconut Cleansing Oil

It’s important to note that despite its benefits, coconut oil can clog pores. You should test it for a couple of days before deciding if it is the best cleansing option for your skin. Otherwise, it has exemplary moisturizing, anti-microbial, antiseptic and anti-aging properties. Coconut oil also provides a pleasant soothing and softening feel to the skin and touch.

Jojoba Cleansing Oil

Jojoba is a popular cleansing ingredient because it is similar to the natural oil that skin produces. It is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, helping to balance acne and oily skin. Great for dry skin as well, it treats skin infections and doesn’t clog pores.

They say oil and water don’t mix. That doesn’t apply when it comes to caring for your skin. Cleansing oil and water is an ideal solution for even the most problematic skin.

Anti-aging Tips By Age

Anti-aging Tips By AgeLet’s face it, we all get older. You can kick, cry, and scream that you don’t want to say good-bye to your youthful appearance, but that won’t stop the calendar from moving forward. However, by taking a proactive approach and starting an anti-aging routine when you’re young, you can hold on to those youthful years just a little bit longer. We’ve taken the liberty of breaking out simple routines based on age to help you get started.

- If you’re in your 20′s
Lucky you to still have a youthful face. However, that youth can also be a curse if you don’t take the time to think about anti-aging. Right now you should be wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to save yourself a lot of grief later one. Additionally, skip the tanning beds. Self tanners are getting better than ever and they won’t give you wrinkles.

- If you’re in your 30′s
While in your 30′s, water may quickly become your best friend. Keeping yourself hydrated is one of the easiest ways to keep skin looking young. In addition, make sure that you’re using a daily moisturizer and taking plenty of vitamin D (at least 1,000 IUs per day).

- If you’re in your 40′s
Anti-aging in your 40′s isn’t just about healthy skin; it’s also about a healthy you. Be sure that you’re eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and cut back on the processed sugar. Regular exercise will also give you a healthy glow. If you haven’t started yet, then it’s time to use retinol to minimize fine lines around your eyes.

- If you’re in your 50′s
This can be a busy age where sleep takes a back seat to higher priorities, but this will wreak havoc on your skin. Make sure you carve at least 8 hours of shuteye a night for yourself. Additionally, consider start using hyaluronic acid if you’re noticing fine lines around your mouth; this product will help hide them.

- If you’re in your 60′s
Starting to worry about anti-aging in your 60′s isn’t too little too late; after all, it’s never too late to start taking proper care of your skin. At this age, the right eye make up can hide drooping eyelids and use products with white or green tea extracts to help fight swelling. Additionally, check that the air in your home isn’t too dry; the lack of moisture is bad for your skin.

Dermalogica Training

Dermalogica TrainingThis week we were so excited to have our Dermalogica training here at Beauty Bridge! The Dermalogica line is super popular with our customers and has many different products to address pretty much any concern one could have. Our trainer, Ariel, was extremely knowledgeable and is both an esthetician and a Dermalogica teacher who teaches at the Institute in New York. She made everything really easy to understand and even gave us some pointers on her favorite product concoctions as the products can be combined in many ways.

The line has eight systems, all made to address concerns of the client that falls in that category and all can be boosted by products from a different range. The line was founded by an esthetician so it focuses on skin health. This means there are no fragrances, mineral oil, chemicals, lanolin or any other ingredients that could compromise the skin or cause allergic reactions. In fact some of the products smell so good you would want to bathe in them!

The most basic system, and the one Ariel suggested we start with, is the Daily Skin Health. The products in the line are the essentials for your everyday skin routine. They keep your skin clean, healthy and moisturized so you can then tackle more intense concerns like aging or breakouts.

The next line is the Age Smart. This line aims to slow down the process of aging before it starts. It has scientifically advanced ingredients that have been proven to stop aging triggers before they start. This line contains retinols, which we all know are the holy grail of ingredients for skin aging, that have been buffered so they do not cause any stinging, peeling or irritation.

The Ultracalming line contains wonderful ingredients like Lavender and Chamomile to soothe the skin and can be used pretty much by anybody but is most beneficial to ultrasensitive skin. We especially loved this line for the wonderful smell and universal usage.

The Medibac and Clear Start lines are both for acne and Ariel said they can both be mixed and matched since sometimes the Medibac line is a little bit stronger than the Clear Start. The Medibac is generally more for adult acne while the Clear Start is for teenage acne. I especially loved the Clearing Booster from the Medibac line because you can add it to any moisturizer and it automatically makes it an acne fighting product.

The Chroma-White line is truly wonderful. It brightens any pigmentation without being harsh or damaging the skin which can lead to premature aging. It does not bleach or lighten the skin, rather brightens it so it is suitable for all skin colors and types. With this system however we were told you have to be very patient since pigmentation is one of the harder things to get rid of in the skin.

Dermalogica also has bodycare products, suncare and moisture tints, all made to compliment the effects you are getting from your skincare products.

We truly enjoyed our training with Ariel and learned a lot about this wonderful line. We can now diagnose and make skin recommendations to all of our wonderful customers and maybe do a little shopping for ourselves!

Neocutis- A Brand Unlike Any Other
Neocutis- A Brand Unlike Any Other

Neocutis is a line of skin care specifically formulated for its anti-aging effects on the skin. Neocutis products have been thoroughly researched and developed by credited Swiss scientists using the very latest in product development technologies.

PSP

PSP stands for Processed Skin Cell Proteins and was discovered first for its wound healing properties. PSP can also be used as an active ingredient in cosmetics and skin care products such as Neocutis, making the Neocutis skin care line the newest generation of naturally balanced products available. PSP produces a balanced combination of polypeptides and skin nourishing proteins which utilizes the power of cytokines and human growth factors for advanced skin revitalization.

Melaplex

Melaplex is another active ingredient found in Neocutis skin care products. It is a proprietary blend of skin brightening ingredients which diminishes dark spots and uneven skin tone, restoring the complexion to a more youthful state of clarified brightness. Melaplex is a combination of four key ingredients that help target pigmentation spots in the skin:

• Phenylethyl Resorcinol

• Leucine

• Undecylenoyl Phenylalanine

• Sodium Glycerophosphate

Melaplex has been clinically tested and proven to improve skin tone by forty three percent in a twelve week, twice daily application.

Rosaplex

Rosaplex is a redness balancing formula that boosts skin’s natural ability to reverse and prevent redness in the skin. Redness can be caused by acne, rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis. The latest research confirms that the skin’s own innate immune system can cause redness and is linked to an over production of anti-microbial peptides. Neocutis products containing Rosaplex restores the skin’s balance and boosts the skin’s defense against redness by combining:

• Sodium Dextran Sulfate

• Zinc PCA

• Caffeine

• Sodium Glycerophosphate

• Glycerin

Rosaplex helps to manage and diminish redness in the skin, blemishes and blotchiness and delivers results in less than eight weeks with twice daily application.

Vita-Plex C

Vita-Plex C assists in managing oxidative stress which increases the activity of free radicals on the skin. These free radicals directly contribute to aging of the skin. Vita-Plex C neutralizes free radicals and supports regeneration with its anti-oxidant properties. Anti-oxidents in Vita-Plex C include hydrophilics and lipophilics blended with an amino acid metabolite which preserves cellular preservation.

Neocutis products are an extremely advanced line of anti-aging and restorative skin care products that target and treat many of the symptoms and signs of aging most often reported by dermatologic patients. Often Neocutis is recommended as a preferred alternative to more invasive treatments such as acid peels or laser skin resurfacing.

Does sunscreen really help prevent aging?

Does sunscreen really help prevent aging?

You may be eager to take advantage the warm summer weather to work on your tan, but by no means does that mean you can ignore sunscreen. It's relatively common knowledge that lotions not only prevent painful sunburns, but can also help limit wrinkles and skin damage later in life. But how much of an effect can the right skin care actually have on the visible signs of aging?

According to a recent study conducted by Australian researchers and published in Annals of Internal Medicine journal, using sunscreen frequently can reduce signs of aging by about 24 percent, Forbes reports. As facial sun care products evolve and grow more effective, the benefits could be even greater.

Exuviance skin care products are a popular choice for people looking to replenish their skin while also gaining the benefits of SPF. These creams and foundations are proven to improve your skin's appearance while offering some much-needed protection from the sun's harmful rays.

If you're worried about looking pale this summer because of your extra sun protection – don't be. There are plenty of ways you can use all-over bronze makeup or even self-tanners to enhance your natural glow without causing damage to your skin.

Embrace anti-aging with the right skincare routine

Embrace anti-aging with the right skincare routine

There’s no surefire way to fight signs of aging, but you can certainly embrace a few best practices that  could help you look and feel your best. A number of anti-aging and wrinkle care products can provide support for all kinds of skin, but even the best products can’t work magic without help. You have to take some on your own to ensure you’re caring for your skin, and incorporating them into your daily routine can boost their effectiveness.

Here are a few things you should doing every day to keep your skin healthy and youthful:

Start fresh each day
It’s important to start the day off on the right foot. Before you do anything to your skin in the morning, cleanse and wash your face. Cleansers get rid of any oils or buildup that accrued during the night, but most are not harsh enough to irritate your skin. Follow that up by wiping your whole face with a cotton ball soaked in toner to remove any excess residue.

Wear sunscreen
If there’s one thing you should never leave home without, it’s facial sunscreen. Apply a layer of the lotion about 15 minutes before you go outdoors, regardless of your planned activities or weather. In the long term, wearing sunscreen can be a significant factor in preventing wrinkles and sun spots, as well as dry or leathery skin, and it is never too late to start protecting yourself from harsh UV light.

Moisturize
No matter what your skin is naturally like – dry, oily or any odd combination – you are going to need to use a moisturizer to replenish your skin and lock in nutrients. The right face moisturizer keeps the epidermis hydrated and better reflects light, giving you a glowing look that hides the appearance of lines or wrinkles. Look for a moisturizer with vitamin C, as the ingredient provides a boost to your skin and can help you look and feel youthful.

It’s a good idea to avoid putting everyday moisturizer around your eyes. The skin around this area is thinner and more fragile – making it more prone to wrinkles – so special eye gels are better equipped to keep crows’ feet at bay. You’ll be able to maintain smooth skin around the eyes while also preventing puffiness and other negative side effects of aging.

Mineral makeup
Much like moisturizers can help to retain the natural chemicals that are good for your skin, mineral makeup brings many of these elements to your face. Mineral makeup can kill bacteria while rejuvenating your skin, so choosing a mineral makeup kit is a wise choice for people who want to freshen up their face while also sticking close to their normal makeup routine.

As a bonus, these minerals often reflect sunlight, acting as a natural SPF. The ingredients are also usually easier to wear regardless of the type of skin you have, which decreases the risk of bad reactions or acne coming about as a result of the product.

End the day right
A long day of wearing makeup, being exposed to the sun and subjecting your skin to a variety of outside factors is less than ideal for your face. Luckily, there are a number of products that can cleanse your skin and replenish it with the nutrients it needs. Cleansing gels from G.M. COLLIN can go a long way toward keeping your face fresh. Not only can it remove leftover makeup and sebum, but it also tightens pores and purifies your skin, letting you look younger and preventing wrinkles.

Are dark spots aging your complexion?

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

Are dark spots aging your complexion?Even if you’re too young for legitimate age spots, dark spots caused by sun exposure and skin damage can still make you look older. According to Allure Magazine, while wrinkles are typically the tell-tale signs of aging, research has shown that mottled skin can have an even worse effect on how people perceive your age. Aside from putting on sunscreen for the face every day to prevent further damage, there is one skincare ingredient that can help fade those spots.

What is it? Hydroquinone. This ingredient inhibits pigment production in your skin, effectively lightening dark spots in as little as a month with daily application. Formulas with two to four percent hydroquinone are available without a prescription, and can be found in products like Murad – Age Spot & Pigment Lightening Gel.

After cleansing your skin as usual, dab a product with hydroquinone on the dark areas of your complexion, then apply your nightly moisturizer. Soon enough, you should notice more even-toned skin that’s visibly younger.

Just keep in mind – if you’re not wearing sunscreen during the day (even if you’re mostly indoors), your efforts will be for naught!

Anti-aging skincare for all ages

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Anti-aging skincare is appropriate for all ages! You’ve probably realized by now that the best way to prevent aging is to start changing your everyday habits and use anti-aging skincare products early – even before you start seeing fine lines, age spots and wrinkles. While not all ages need every anti-aging product on the market, there are certain things you should be providing your skin in your 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. Here’s a list of the things everyone should do, followed by advice for each stage of your mid-life, according to SimplyAntiAging.com and Allure magazine.

Anti-aging advice for all ages
These tips are meant to be started immediately for all ages.
1. Stop smoking. Even if you’ve been a smoker for a number of years, it’s never too late to stop further damage from happening. Smoking greatly accelerates the aging of your skin because it encourages the destruction of collagen, which helps your skin remain plump and smooth. Smoking can make your skin dull, dry and wrinkled, so do yourself a favor and quit!
2. Wear sunscreen. Applying sunblock not only protects your skin from getting burned, but it protects your skin from aging. Prolonged sun exposure can create advanced age spots, wrinkles and give your skin a leathery texture. Use a product like Dermablend – Cover Creme SPF 30 (New Formula), which covers up existing marks and protects your skin.
3. Eat well. As long as your diet is full of fresh fruits and vegetables, your skin should be getting the antioxidants and vitamins you need to fight the signs of aging. Omega-3 fatty acids are also important, so be sure to include nuts and fish like salmon into your diet. If you’re concerned that you’re not getting enough, consider taking a vitamin supplement.
4. Exercise. Working out and moving is great for all parts of your body – even your skin. It increases the delivery of oxygen to your skin cells, as well as important vitamins so your skin looks younger longer. Make sure to drink plenty of water as you exercise to keep hydrated.
5. Sleep. Ever heard of beauty sleep? It’s real. Your body releases hormones while you’re sleeping to stimulate cell turnover and refresh your skin. Too much stress and lack of sleep can suppress your immune system and speed up aging, so get plenty of rest each night.

What to do when you’re:
• In your 20s. During this hectic age, you should be protecting and repairing your skin. Stress can increase the amount of damaging free radicals in your body, which show up as dark circles, puffiness and dullness. Use plenty of sunscreen, as well as a moisturizer with plenty of antioxidant ingredients, like Exuviance – Essential Daily Defense Fluid SPF 15.
• In your 30s. When you begin to see signs of aging, it’s time to exfoliate and regenerate your skin. Declining levels of collagen and elastin can create fine lines and wrinkles, while the rate of skin regeneration begins to slow down. Use products with peptides or retinols, which help to elevate your collagen and elastin, like BABOR – DOCTOR BABOR Derma Cellular Collagen Booster Cream. Exfoliate regularly to get rid of dead cells and increase cell turnover on the surface of your skin.
• In your 40s. During this period you may notice that your skin seems thinner and less hydrated, which is why it’s important to plump and soothe. Use a product with hyaluronic acid, which hold water to plump your skin from within. SkinMedica – Hydrating Complex is a good choice.
• In your 50s. Changes in your hormones can cause dryness at this age, so it’s crucial to hydrate and nurture your skin. Glycerin and ceramides can help to repair your skin’s natural moisture barrier, so use a product like SkinMedica – TNS Ceramide Treatment Cream.

Turn back the time on age spots

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Concerned about age spots?Age spots, also known as sun spots, liver spots and solar lentigines, are widespread among adults over 40, but young people can also get them. If you notice you're getting age spots on your skin, don't worry because they're harmless and don't require treatment. If you're not a fan of how they look, there are products available that can lighten and fade the marks, but prevention is key. Wear sunscreen every day and avoid getting too much sun.

These marks typically occur on parts of your body that are frequently exposed to sunlight, including your shoulders, upper back, the back of your hands and the tops of your feet. They can be scattered or grouped together, making their appearance more obvious. If you notice an age spot that changes in size, color or border, see a doctor because it could be a sign of skin cancer.

A product like PCA Skin – Pigment Gel (pHaze 13) can exfoliate your skin to lighten and inhibit the hyperpigmentation that causes age spots. Just apply before sunscreen and moisturizer and allow it to penetrate. Cover up the spot with dual-action makeup like Jane Iredale – Enlighten Concealer, which works to lighten age spots as you mask them. Your age spots will be unnoticeable in no time.
