The Beauty of Cleansing Oils

The Beauty of Cleansing OilsAny beautician will attest to the benefits of cleansing oils for skin care. They contain a broad range of healthy antioxidants, can relieve specific skin conditions and have incredible moisturizing properties. They are also exceptional for cleaning skin without clogging pores, a serious issue with most soaps and other cleansing products.

Methods for Cleansing with Oil

  1. Select an oil suited to your skin type.
  2. Run yourself a nice steamy bath and get a clean wash cloth.
  3. Place eight to 10 drops in your palm and rub it carefully between the palms to warm the cleansing oil.
  4. Massage the oil thoroughly into the skin. You want to remove all traces of sebum and makeup impurities. Perform the act for no less than two minutes.
  5. Dip the wash cloth into the steamy water. Do not ring out water. Instead drape it across your face.
  6. After the wash cloth cools, gently pat away excess oil.
  7. Repeat the process up to five times or until your skin feels clear of oil and impurities.
  8. Tone and moisturize.

Choosing a Cleansing Oil

Talk with a beautician or other skin care specialist about how to determine what cleansing oil is best for your situation. Still, here are a few of the best oil cleansers and moisturizers for cleaning skin and effectively combatting issues like acne.

Argan Cleansing Oil

Besides not clogging pores, argan oil is a sound solution for preventing stretch marks and restoring skin elasticity, rehydrating skin and regenerating skin cells. It’s helpful in the reduction of brown spots and acne. It also provides a healthy dose of Vitamin E, which is great for skin care.

Coconut Cleansing Oil

It’s important to note that despite its benefits, coconut oil can clog pores. You should test it for a couple of days before deciding if it is the best cleansing option for your skin. Otherwise, it has exemplary moisturizing, anti-microbial, antiseptic and anti-aging properties. Coconut oil also provides a pleasant soothing and softening feel to the skin and touch.

Jojoba Cleansing Oil

Jojoba is a popular cleansing ingredient because it is similar to the natural oil that skin produces. It is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, helping to balance acne and oily skin. Great for dry skin as well, it treats skin infections and doesn’t clog pores.

They say oil and water don’t mix. That doesn’t apply when it comes to caring for your skin. Cleansing oil and water is an ideal solution for even the most problematic skin.

Using Retinol 101

Using Retinol 101You’ve heard of retinol as a skin care revolution, but is it right for your skin? This compound, also known as Vitamin A, is added to skin creams and potions as an anti-aging miracle, with beauty-boosting properties that range from unclogging pores to boosting collagen and reducing fine lines to evening discoloring and smoothing skin. Read on to learn more about whether you should use retinol and how to find the right product for you.

Experts say that retinol is the single most important skin care ingredient to combat the effects of aging. However, although it really works, it may take time for you to see a dramatic effect. Retinol is best used as a long-term method to protect the youthful look and feel of your skin, not as a fast fix measure to hide damage that has already occurred. Most dermatologists recommend that women start using retinol in their 30s, and definitely by the time they hit 40, for maximum protection against the effects of aging.

While the strongest forms of retinol are available only with a prescription, you should first test out an over-the-counter version to see if you like the results. Look for brands that specifically list retinol high in the ingredient list, as related compounds may be less effective.

Start off by using a small amount of retinol at night in conjunction with a moisturizer to see how your skin responds. Because retinol increases skin cell turnover, some users may experience redness and stinging, particularly with frequent use. If you have sensitive skin, start out slow and discontinue use of this product if you experience irritation or discomfort. These symptoms are more likely to occur with the prescription form of retinol.

An important caution, particularly for those who begin using retinol products in their 20s, is that the compound can actually thin skin over time. This makes you more susceptible to the effects of sun damage, which is not only dangerous but will counteract any anti-aging effects you’ve gained from use of the product. Make sure to always wear SPF on your face, especially if you’re using retinol products.

Dermalogica Training

Dermalogica TrainingThis week we were so excited to have our Dermalogica training here at Beauty Bridge! The Dermalogica line is super popular with our customers and has many different products to address pretty much any concern one could have. Our trainer, Ariel, was extremely knowledgeable and is both an esthetician and a Dermalogica teacher who teaches at the Institute in New York. She made everything really easy to understand and even gave us some pointers on her favorite product concoctions as the products can be combined in many ways.

The line has eight systems, all made to address concerns of the client that falls in that category and all can be boosted by products from a different range. The line was founded by an esthetician so it focuses on skin health. This means there are no fragrances, mineral oil, chemicals, lanolin or any other ingredients that could compromise the skin or cause allergic reactions. In fact some of the products smell so good you would want to bathe in them!

The most basic system, and the one Ariel suggested we start with, is the Daily Skin Health. The products in the line are the essentials for your everyday skin routine. They keep your skin clean, healthy and moisturized so you can then tackle more intense concerns like aging or breakouts.

The next line is the Age Smart. This line aims to slow down the process of aging before it starts. It has scientifically advanced ingredients that have been proven to stop aging triggers before they start. This line contains retinols, which we all know are the holy grail of ingredients for skin aging, that have been buffered so they do not cause any stinging, peeling or irritation.

The Ultracalming line contains wonderful ingredients like Lavender and Chamomile to soothe the skin and can be used pretty much by anybody but is most beneficial to ultrasensitive skin. We especially loved this line for the wonderful smell and universal usage.

The Medibac and Clear Start lines are both for acne and Ariel said they can both be mixed and matched since sometimes the Medibac line is a little bit stronger than the Clear Start. The Medibac is generally more for adult acne while the Clear Start is for teenage acne. I especially loved the Clearing Booster from the Medibac line because you can add it to any moisturizer and it automatically makes it an acne fighting product.

The Chroma-White line is truly wonderful. It brightens any pigmentation without being harsh or damaging the skin which can lead to premature aging. It does not bleach or lighten the skin, rather brightens it so it is suitable for all skin colors and types. With this system however we were told you have to be very patient since pigmentation is one of the harder things to get rid of in the skin.

Dermalogica also has bodycare products, suncare and moisture tints, all made to compliment the effects you are getting from your skincare products.

We truly enjoyed our training with Ariel and learned a lot about this wonderful line. We can now diagnose and make skin recommendations to all of our wonderful customers and maybe do a little shopping for ourselves!

Neocutis- A Brand Unlike Any Other
Neocutis- A Brand Unlike Any Other

Neocutis is a line of skin care specifically formulated for its anti-aging effects on the skin. Neocutis products have been thoroughly researched and developed by credited Swiss scientists using the very latest in product development technologies.

PSP

PSP stands for Processed Skin Cell Proteins and was discovered first for its wound healing properties. PSP can also be used as an active ingredient in cosmetics and skin care products such as Neocutis, making the Neocutis skin care line the newest generation of naturally balanced products available. PSP produces a balanced combination of polypeptides and skin nourishing proteins which utilizes the power of cytokines and human growth factors for advanced skin revitalization.

Melaplex

Melaplex is another active ingredient found in Neocutis skin care products. It is a proprietary blend of skin brightening ingredients which diminishes dark spots and uneven skin tone, restoring the complexion to a more youthful state of clarified brightness. Melaplex is a combination of four key ingredients that help target pigmentation spots in the skin:

• Phenylethyl Resorcinol

• Leucine

• Undecylenoyl Phenylalanine

• Sodium Glycerophosphate

Melaplex has been clinically tested and proven to improve skin tone by forty three percent in a twelve week, twice daily application.

Rosaplex

Rosaplex is a redness balancing formula that boosts skin’s natural ability to reverse and prevent redness in the skin. Redness can be caused by acne, rosacea or seborrheic dermatitis. The latest research confirms that the skin’s own innate immune system can cause redness and is linked to an over production of anti-microbial peptides. Neocutis products containing Rosaplex restores the skin’s balance and boosts the skin’s defense against redness by combining:

• Sodium Dextran Sulfate

• Zinc PCA

• Caffeine

• Sodium Glycerophosphate

• Glycerin

Rosaplex helps to manage and diminish redness in the skin, blemishes and blotchiness and delivers results in less than eight weeks with twice daily application.

Vita-Plex C

Vita-Plex C assists in managing oxidative stress which increases the activity of free radicals on the skin. These free radicals directly contribute to aging of the skin. Vita-Plex C neutralizes free radicals and supports regeneration with its anti-oxidant properties. Anti-oxidents in Vita-Plex C include hydrophilics and lipophilics blended with an amino acid metabolite which preserves cellular preservation.

Neocutis products are an extremely advanced line of anti-aging and restorative skin care products that target and treat many of the symptoms and signs of aging most often reported by dermatologic patients. Often Neocutis is recommended as a preferred alternative to more invasive treatments such as acid peels or laser skin resurfacing.

Spotlight on BB Cream: How to use it

The buzz about BB creams has been building in recent years, and with good reason: These multi-tasking products are a perfect solution when you don't want to wear heavy concealer or foundation. While moisturizing your skin, a BB cream can also provide just the right amount of sheer coverage without a caked-on appearance. Moreover, most of these products have SPF to protect against sun damage. In addition, they can act as a primer for the rest of your makeup and survive through sweat for a long-lasting look.

Finding your match
With a slew of BB creams out there, it can be hard to know which one to choose. The best BB cream for you depends on your specific concerns and priorities. If you're looking for a product that can lift sagging skin while fighting fine lines, the B. Kamins Chemist BB Cream is chock-full of powerful vitamins and antioxidants that revitalize aging skin. Not only that, but particles in the cream reflect light on your face for a boost in radiance.

The G.M. COLLIN Mineral BB Cream SPF 25, on the other hand, is a great alternative if you just want to correct any discoloration while hydrating and smoothing out the skin. This cream is also lightly pigmented to give you a healthy bronze glow. However, if you're looking to address serious breakouts or blemishes with BB cream, She Knows advises getting a dermatologist's opinion to help you decide on a product.

Let the benefits begin
Before applying the selected BB cream, thoroughly cleanse your face. If your skin is ultra dry, celebrity makeup artist Piper Cline told She Knows that it can be helpful to first put on a moisturizer. Next, take no more than a tiny dollop and dab it onto areas in need of correction, such as redness in the cheeks or dark undereye circles. Finally, use a foundation brush to distribute the product evenly across the rest of your face. Cline also noted that dusting on a finishing powder afterward can help to achieve a flawless, shine-free complexion all day long.

There are plenty of uses for BB cream beyond evening out your skin tone. Allure magazine explained that applying BB cream over a blush, whether it's a cream, powder or stain formula, can tone down a cheek color that's too intense. The magazine also pointed out that mixing a shimmery loose powder into the BB cream can brighten up a drab complexion or act as a highlighter on cheekbones, browbones and the collarbone.

What to drink for healthier, brighter skin

Healthier, brighter skin now: What to drink

We all know it's important to drink enough water and consume nutrient-dense superfoods for radiant skin. However, experts say that there are other beverages that can provide a bevy of benefits, from fewer fine lines to enhanced elasticity. Here are some drinks you'll want to sip on for a glowing complexion.

Green tea
For maximum skin-boosting advantages, this tea is best consumed hot. Women's Health magazine reported that heat causes the tea to release an antioxidant which not only acts as an anti-inflammatory but can also ward off cancer. The source noted that a study in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry determined that drinking between two and six cups a day may help prevent malignancies that result from too much sun exposure.

Oat milk
Some say that eliminating dairy products can improve the skin's appearance. Glamour magazine recommended switching out traditional cow's milk for oat milk, which is available at most supermarkets. The source explained that this alternative has a significant amount of vitamin E and folic acid, both of which are key for healthy skin regeneration.

Nettle tea
Does your skin tend to flare up? Nettle tea might be just the remedy if you are prone to breakouts or eczema, according to Glamour. High levels antioxidants mean the tea may also help rid the skin and body of toxins and free radicals, which tend to speed up the aging process.

Fruit and veggie juice
When you're not in the mood to eat your vegetables, drinking them can provide the same essential nutrients that help brighten and protect skin. Noelle Swatland of GreenLemonade.com told Shape magazine that the right concoctions can help to rid the body of impurities and restore balance to the skin, thus evening out its tone. Cucumbers are her top choice, as they are packed with skin-boosting potassium, magnesium and silica. Not only that, but cucumbers are a whopping 90 percent water, so they're ultra-hydrating. Tomato juice is also an ideal selection, as Glamour pointed out that these fruits contain skin-tightening vitamin C and lycopene, which helps circulation.

Peppermint tea
Stress is a major skin villain. When things are getting tense, unwind with a cup of peppermint tea, which Glamour magazine pointed out has innate soothing effects. There are other benefits as well: The herb can help to clear out the sinuses, relieve a headache and facilitate digestion.

Look alive! Makeup for looking less tired

On mornings when you're not well rested, all it takes is a few tweaks to your makeup routine to look less tired. While putting on concealer is helpful, it's not enough to cover up the exhaustion – but these tips can help you fake a good night's sleep.

The first step to livening up the face is applying an illuminating foundation to even out the complexion. It's crucial to use the right hue for your skin tone, as a too-pale shade could look dull and wash you out. A pop of rosy blush brightens the entire face, which distracts from any shadows under the eyes. Look for a color that has a hint of gold, which will also counteract the blue tones in undereye circles. A shimmering bronzer can also do wonders for adding dimension to the face and making you looking more lively.

Lighten up on eyeshadow application, as a heavy, dramatic or smoky look can actually make eyes look smaller and wearier. Lining the upper lashes with two different hues, such as a deep brown and a vibrant emerald green, can make the whites of your eyes look even brighter.

A softly arched brow lifts the eyelids, drawing attention away from dark circles and puffiness. Brush eyebrows upward and fill them in with a pencil or powder that is two shades lighter than the natural color to appear even more alert.

Are you rushing through your skincare regimen?

Monday, November 12th, 2012

Are you rushing through your skincare regimen? When it comes to morning rituals, most women have to hustle to get everything done. From showering to blow-drying and straightening those stubborn locks, it can be tough just trying to look your best each day, but a labor of love well spent when it counts.

Unfortunately, all that rushing around can have a negative impact on the quality of your routine. According to Glamour magazine’s beauty blog, speeding through a skincare regimen is one of the biggest – and most common – beauty faux pas around!

For starters, you should give yourself plenty of quality time with moisturizers like PRIORI – Advanced AHA Skin Renewal Cream. Give your skin a chance to absorb all the great nutrients of this potent blend by dabbing a quarter-size amount in both hands and working it over both your face and neck.

Once you’re through, a creamy, soap-free exfoliant like Exuviance – Age Reverse BioActiv Wash can be a terrific way to jumpstart your day and rid your complexion of harmful pollutants that can pile up on the surface of skin, even while you’re sleeping.

You may have to wake up a little early to get this extended beauty ritual underway, but you’ll be more than happy once you get a look at the results!

What can glycolic acid do for you?

Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

Glycolic acid can do a lot to brighten a dull complexion!Have you noticed that your complexion is looking less radiant lately? Unfortunately, it’s normal for skin to start losing its luster over the years as cell turnover slows, leaving dead skin cells around for longer to dull our complexions, reports Allure Magazine. But there are ways you can speed up the process, and glycolic acid is one of the best choices.

According to the source, this acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that’s derived from sugarcane. It works by dissolving the glue-like substance that keeps our skin cells stuck together, improving skin’s texture and removing dead cells, leaving you with a glowing, younger-looking complexion.

Use a cleanser with the ingredient, like being TRUE – Purifying Glycolic Gel Cleanser, on a daily basis to remove impurities, prevent blemishes and reveal newer, brighter skin. You may even want to follow up with a moisturizer that contains glycolic acid or another alpha hydroxy acid that’ll speed up cell turnover.

Then, twice a week, use an at-home glycolic acid peel to rejuvenate your complexion. You’ll be unveiling smoother, softer skin, and some products also help protect against free-radical damage and boost collagen levels.
