Hair trend alert: the braided top knot

Friday, September 21st, 2012

Transform your bun into a braided top knot!In case you haven't noticed, there are two major hair trends that have been getting attention all summer long. That's the chic top knot and the cool, intricate braid. Both of these styles are great on their own, but can you imagine the awesomeness that ensues when you combine them into the same hairstyle? The braided top knot not only looks fabulous, but it's not as hard to do as it looks.

There are two ways that you can pull this look off – one involves braiding the front version near your hairline, while the other braids the section of hair underneath the bun on the back of your head. Either way looks great, and it's up to you which one you want to pull off.

Start with a little texturizing cream, then French braid your hair. You can do it as you normally would if you're braiding the top, but if you're doing the lower section on the back of your head, it may help to lie on your bed or a couch and hang your head off the edge (with your face toward the floor) so you get better access.

Stop braiding when you get to the point where the bun will be and secure it with a small elastic. A spritz of hairspray will keep it in place so you can put your hair into a bun as you normally would, whether it's with pins, a sock or an elastic. Done!

Top 5 tips for pulling off hair accessories this fall

Thursday, September 20th, 2012

Looking for tips on how to rock this fall's trendy hair accessories? Here they are!Hair accessories are a hot commodity these days, and now that summer’s humidity is gone, you’ll probably be looking for ways to flaunt your smoother ‘do. To draw attention to your mane and have fun with the latest accessory trends, follow these tips to perfection.

1. Add shine first. Accessories in dull hair aren’t flattering, so boost the shine of your locks with plenty of glossing hair products.

2. Use barrettes instead of elastics. Allure Magazine recommends these accessories because they’re more elegant and grown-up looking.

3. Turn anything into an accessory. You don’t have to stick to the usual items – try securing brooches, earrings, flowers or necklaces in your hair with floral wire for added intrigue.

4. Give them plenty of grip. Second-day hair is ideal, reports Allure, but a product like Fekkai – COIFF Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray can add texture if you like washing your hair every day.

5. Don’t just use them to keep your hair out of your face. A well-placed headband or sparkly clip can be a simple way to update your look – it doesn’t need to serve a particular purpose other than lending you fabulousness!

Jealous of Lauren Conrad’s waves? Get ‘em yourself!

Monday, September 17th, 2012

Want waves like Lauren's? Here's how to get them!As a true California girl, Lauren Conrad rocks seriously awesome waves on a regular basis. And with locks like hers, why shouldn’t she? While it’s true that LC has the help of stylists when it comes to creating that mermaid-like perfection, that doesn’t mean their methods aren’t worth noting. If you’re dying for Conrad-esque waves of your own, Allure Magazine got the details from one of her hairdressers.

After showering, apply a leave-in conditioner throughout your hair, from the roots to the ends. Then add a silicone-based serum for extra shine that’ll last all day – even if things get a little humid.

Now use a 1 ¼-inch curling iron to make loose curls, starting at eye level. Focus heavily on the ones around your face, taking care not to make them too uniform – you want the waves to look natural. Do this by twisting each strand the opposite way from the last one you did.

When you’re done with your whole head, use a light-hold hairspray to make the waves last even longer, then use your fingers to separate. You should end up with a gorgeous mane that’s just as shiny and wavy as Lauren’s!

Want to know stylists’ secret for super shiny strands?

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Here's how you can boost your hair's shine!Shiny hair is a sign of health, youth and attractiveness – who wouldn’t want it? But unless you were born with the hair of a supermodel (who probably wasn’t even born with it herself), your strands might not be as lustrous as you’d like. But Allure Magazine got the scoop on how to ensure shiny locks from some of the top stylists at New York Fashion Week. Here’s the deal.

After using a clarifying shampoo like BORGHESE – Shampoo Purificante Cleansing Treatment for Hair and Scalp to get rid of buildup, blowdry your hair as usual (without using any products) and use a flat iron to straighten your hair. This smoothes the hair cuticles, creating a sleek surface.

Now pick up a shine spray or cream like Fekkai – Advanced Brilliant Glossing Cream. Use a bit more than you normally would – as long as the product doesn’t contain silicone (which is in most shine serums), your hair won’t look wet.

Now blowdry your hair again quickly to set the product and create a “shield of shine,” as one stylist said. Looks almost reflective, doesn’t it?

How to create the perfect braided bun

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Looking for the perfect braided bun?If you’re looking for a new way to wear your hair that adds volume and sophistication, why not try a braided bun? While you might think that creating this style is a no-brainer (just make a braid and wrap it around itself), it looks a lot better if you take the time to make it thick. Here’s how to get it right, according to The Beauty Department.

First, use a shine-enhancing shampoo in the shower to be sure that your strands are sleek and smooth. Afterward, when your hair is dry, create two equally sized ponytails wherever you want the bun to be centered. They should be pretty close together

Now twist each ponytail into a rope braid, which is a lot easier than it sounds. You just divide it into two sections and twist them around each other. Secure the end of each one with an elastic. Use your fingers to fatten up the twists a bit for some texture, and use a strong-hold hairspray if a few pieces are falling out.

Now coil one of the braids up and over the back of your head, pinning it in place as you go. Tuck the end under the bottom of the other braid, then wrap that second one inside the other, concealing the center. Pin it in place and you’re done!

Five ways to wear a headband this fall

Friday, September 7th, 2012

Fall is the perfect time to start wearing headbands again! If it's been years since you've ventured into headband territory, the onset of September (a.k.a. back-to-school season) is the perfect excuse to get back on the bandwagon. From glamorous updos to preppy blowouts to disheveled gym hair, there's nothing like a pretty headband to take your look to the next level. Here are a few ways to rock 'em this fall.

1. Down and wavy. Make your hair look super luxurious with a replenishing hair mask like Fekkai – Advanced PrX Reparatives Intensive Fortifying Mask, then blowdry and curl as usual. Slip on a headband with a large bow on the side.

2. Up and sleek. Twist your hair back into a bun, using a bit of light hold hairspray to smooth down any flyaways. Slide on a thin headband that matches your haircolor.

3. Low and to the side. After adding curls to your hair, part it on the side and gather it behind the opposite ear, leaving a few face-framing tendrils out in the front. Then add a sparkly headband.

4. Chic and boho. Part your hair in the center, then make waves with a curling iron. Slide on a thick, bejeweled headband at your hairline.

5. Tousled and glamorous. Curl your hair, then pin up sections randomly, twisting here and there for a tousled effect. Then add a couple sparkly headband chains toward the front.

How to get your hair to go from straight to curly

Tuesday, September 4th, 2012

Want to go from straight to curly?Having straight hair is great as far as maintenance is concerned – you probably don't have to worry much about combating frizz or sleekifying your strands. But what happens if you want to switch up your look to a curly style? You might think it's difficult to get your straight hair to hold a curl, but with these tips it's a lot easier than you'd expect!

First, use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner in the shower before styling your tresses. Hamadi – Honey Soymilk Hair Wash will do the trick.

After the shower, when your hair is still damp, apply a curl-enhancing product. Then, right before you blowdry, spray your strands with a hairspray like Fekkai – COIFF Sheer Hold Hairspray. Blowdry your hair normally afterward, using a round brush to smooth out tangles.

Now, use a set of hot rollers to add curls to your hair. Just twist a small section of hair around each roller, roll them up toward your scalp and secure them in place. Spritz on a bit more hairspray when the curlers are in, then wait until they're cooled before taking them out.

Shake the curls out and separate them with your fingers, then spray on a bit more hairspray to really hold the curl. Easy!

Need an easy way to preserve your blowout and wake up with perfect waves?

Wednesday, August 29th, 2012

You don't have to wake up with messy hair anymore! It's hard to know what really goes on when you're sleeping, but based on how your hair looks upon waking up, it's safe to say that your head had a pretty intense time. But isn't it annoying when you just got a super sleek blowout the day before and have to wake up and do it all over again now that your tresses are unruly? Well, consider this trick your secret weapon for preserving that blowout.

According to The Beauty Department, you can wake up with smooth waves the day after a blowout with just a few simple moves. First, start out on the day of the blowout by applying a product that prevents humidity from messing up your strands, like Fekkai – Advanced Silky Straight Ironless Smooth Finish Serum.

Before you hit the hay, part your hair wherever you naturally part it, then divide it into two sections. Divide one section into two pieces, then twist them around each other like a rope, just bringing one piece forward while the other goes behind. Secure the end with an elastic and repeat on the other side. Then go to sleep!

When you wake up, take the twists out and add a little shine spray, like Fekkai – Advanced Brilliant Glossing Sheer Shine Mist. You should have smooth waves with no frizz!

One simple hair move that can transform any style

Wednesday, August 15th, 2012

Added height on top can transform any hairstyle! With social media sites like Pinterest and Tumblr providing hairstyle inspiration for women everywhere, there are more possibilities for unique styles than ever before. Whether you're dying to try out a trendy side braid, mermaid-like waves or an elaborate updo, there's one styling move that's sure to give the look an extra shot of polish.

According to Glamour Magazine's beauty blog, that move is creating a small hair bump at the back of your head. It works with any style, and it's totally easy to do as long as your hair is capable of holding some volume. So how can you pull it off?

Adding a little height at the back of your head is as simple as teasing the area and using a bit of hairspray, like Fekkai – COIFF Sheer Hold Hairspray. Just make sure that it's the layers of hair underneath the top layer that you're teasing, otherwise it may look messy.

Of course, a little extra volume beforehand couldn't hurt, so try using a shampoo like Fekkai – Advanced Full Blown Volume Shampoo in the shower on the day you plan to try the style.

How to make clip-in hair extensions look more natural

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

Hair extensions look natural when you use these tips!If the thought of suddenly growing inches upon inches of thick, luxurious hair sounds like a dream come true, you're in luck. Today's hair extensions are more natural looking than ever, and they're often easy to apply – especially the clip-in variety. But how can you make sure that your extensions blend in with your own hair? Here are a few tips from hairstylist Ken Paves, who gave advice to Allure Magazine.

1. Rough it up. The combs in the extension might slip out if your hair is naturally fine or smooth, which means that a good dose of hairspray like Leonor Greyl – Structure Naturelle is key. You'll also need to tease the area where you're going to be putting in the clips.

2. Boost body. If your hair is thin or fine, you'll need some volume on your side in order to hide the clips. Leonor Greyl – Mousse Au Lotus Volumatrice can add texture and body that will help you tease the areas that are above and below the extensions, successfully masking them.

3. Style both. Your hair and your extensions should be styled the same, so whether you're blowdrying, curling, flat ironing, braiding or waving, you'll need to do it to your entire head of hair – fake and natural. This should blend the two seamlessly.
