Hot makeup trends from the 2013 Golden Globes

If you’re looking for a little inspiration for the next time you put on your mascara, eyeliner and lipstick, you might want to see what some of Hollywood’s brightest stars were wearing at the 2013 Golden Globes! There’s no better source for makeup ideas than the red carpet. Here are some of the celebrities who made a statement at the event.

Jessica Alba
Cosmopolitan magazine commended Jessica Alba for playing it bold with orange lipstick on the red carpet. She went natural on the rest of her face to allow her pout to shine, which was a big trend in 2012.

Kate Hudson
Hudson complemented her beautiful blonde locks with gold makeup that shimmered as she posed for photographers. Expect more women to lean toward face-brightening, shimmery makeup in the new year. A little bit of glow around your eyes and cheeks can make a world of difference.

Stacy Keibler
Like Alba, Stacy Keibler opted for makeup that allowed her natural beauty to come through, according to Allure magazine. With the exception of a bit of brown eyeshadow around her peepers, Keibler proved that you don’t need a ton of color on your face to make a memorable statement.

Four hot makeup trends to try in spring 2013

Four hot makeup trends to try in spring 2013Whether you always try to stay up to date on the latest mascara trends or you simply want to revamp your makeup routine, there are plenty of styles to take advantage of in 2013. Some of the most popular ones were seen on runways during New York Fashion Week, but celebrities have been giving onlookers a sneak peek at what's to come in the new year as well.

Some of the hottest trends are ones that have been seen in the past, but appear to be making a comeback – winged eyes, full brows and jewel tones. Others may come as a complete shock to you as you look to tweak your eyeliner routine and add to your makeup collection. Here are styles to try in spring 2013.

1. Full brows.
Gone are the days when women were expected to wax their eyebrows to the bare minimum! Full brows were seen earlier in 2012 on runway models, but they quickly faded out as the seasons changed. Now, BellaSugar.com reports that they're bound to make a comeback in the new year.

Whether you're used to plucking your brows or paying to have them professionally waxed every couple of weeks, give yourself one less thing to do by cutting out this routine. Full brows are the way to go as more women look to frame their faces with this method. To give your eyebrows a more voluptuous look, consider using the BABOR Maxi Definition Eye Brow Pencil.

2. Smudged eyeliner.
As Marie Claire magazine points out, sometimes a bit of smudging is a good thing. This trend was recently seen at New York Fashion Week, showcasing some of the most popular styles meant to take the makeup world by storm come 2013. Many models stepped onto the runway wearing smudged eyeliner under their eyes to give off a casual yet dramatic look.

For women who get a little lazy when applying their eyeliner, this trend is right down your alley! Don't knock it before you try it – this might be your new date-night appearance.

3. Simplicity.
Another trend that made itself evident on runways in anticipation for spring 2013 was simplicity. Many designers took the liberty to use one cosmetic – and lots of it – but then left the rest behind. For example, MAC artist Tom Pecheux used navy eyeliner on one model on her top lash lines to give her peepers definition, but went bare on the rest of her face.

You might be fearful of going with just one makeup product on your face, especially if you're used to piling on foundation and lip gloss. However, the new year is the perfect time to try something fresh – embrace your natural beauty!

4. Bold lips.
Harper's Bazaar magazine reports that while neutral lip colors reigned supreme during the fall and winter, things aren't likely to stay this way heading into 2013. In fact, more designers, such as Burberry, have been giving their models bold lipsticks to wear as they strut down the runway and display their latest designs.

If you want to capitalize on this trend yourself, consider adding some fire engine red and berry or magenta lipsticks to your collection before spring arrives. This will prepare you for what the makeup world has to offer in the coming months.

While not everyone is keen on keeping up with the latest trends in cosmetics, doing so isn't as difficult as you may think – watching the runways and the red carpet can easily give you inspiration for your next look.

Make a splash at your next outing with cues from Katy Perry

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

Make a splash at your next outing with cues from Katy PerrySinger Katy Perry is as well known for her outrageous sense of fashion as she is for her chart-topping hit singles, including "I Kissed A Girl" and "Firework." While Perry's style can certainly get a little imaginative at times – blue hair, anyone? – she has a unique look that's all her own. If you want to make a splash at your next social gathering, consider taking a few cues from the trendsetting starlet.

At the Trevor Project's 2012 Trevor Live! event on December 2, Perry showed off a look that we just can't help but fall in love with.

With her dark hair styled in loose waves and framed by an adorable braid, the "Last Friday Night" songstress looked positively radiant! A nourishing conditioner like Fekkai – Advanced Perfectly Luscious Curls Conditioner can lend definition and nutrients to your ringlets if you're trying to recreate Perry's eye-catching 'do.

But if you really want to leave behind a bold impression, you should accentuate your eyes. For perfectly outlined peepers, a product like Youngblood – Fine Liner Brush is an excellent choice. After you're done, a vibrant shimmer eyeshadow like Too Faced – Glamour Dust Glitter Pigment can give you just the right amount of sparkle to shine like Perry.

How to pull off geometric eyeliner

Friday, November 30th, 2012

How to pull off geometric eyelinerOkay, admit it – when it comes to taking beauty risks, you usually like to play it safe, right? For many women, reliable tricks like the cat-eye are the cornerstone of their regimens, and it's easy to see why. This ultra-flattering look can complement ladies of any age and leave a remarkable impression on friends, coworkers and boyfriends alike.

However, the cat-eye can get stale over time, which is why new trends, like geometric eyeliner, can be a great way to invigorate your routine. Before you panic, consider these tips, which can make this seemingly tough beauty trick absolutely effortless to pull off.

First, you should grab some primer and dab it along your lids. This will ensure that your eyeliner lasts throughout the day and doesn't become chalky or worse, rubs off.

Once you've applied the primer, take a trusty, waterproof eyeliner and apply it along your lash line. Approach this step just like you typically would the cat-eye, and don't forget to add a swoop to the outer rims of your makeup.

Now comes the fun part. Taking your eyeliner and starting at the outer rim, create a funky zig zag. To add extra sparkle to your style, you can trace above your lash with a vibrant blue eyeliner. Wasn't that easy?

How to make a faux bob

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

Like the look of a bob but don't want to cut your long hair? Try a faux bob!Have you ever noticed how some stars rock the red carpet with long, gorgeous locks one night and show up a few days later with a chic bob? Sure, there are extensions and major haircuts that might come into play sometimes, but one of the latest celebrity hair trends is the faux bob. Believe it or not, it's easy to create yourself!

Start out with a reparative shampoo in the shower, which will strengthen weak or broken hair, leaving it much softer and more manageable. A complementary conditioner will further prep your strands for styling.

Now, it's up to you to decide if you want a curly or straight faux bob. Depending on your choice, you may need to use a curling iron or a straightener to achieve the texture you're looking for.

When that's finished, gather your hair into a low ponytail and use a small elastic to secure it loosely toward the end of the tail. Tuck the end underneath the tail and roll the entire thing up toward the nape of your neck. It's okay if a few pieces fall out – especially if you have shorter layers!

Secure the roll of hair in place with plenty of bobby pins, then use a hairspray like Fekkai – COIFF Sheer Hold Hairspray for added hold. That's it!

Want to try the dark, vampy lip trend with no commitment?

Want to try out the vampy lip look without spending a dime?Dark, vampy lipstick is hot this season, showing up all over the place, from the runways to the red carpets to the streets of a city or town near you. But unless you know for a fact that you're capable of pulling off this daring look, it might not be feasible to drop the cash on a suitable lipstick. After all, you'd probably rather spend your money on a shade you know you're going to love, like something from the Too Faced – La Creme Color Drenched Lip Cream collection.

So how can you try out the vampy lip look without spending a dime? According to The Beauty Department, all you need is a trusty black eyeliner. Yes, eyeliner. It sounds weird, but read on.

All you need to do is use the black pencil to trace the shape of your lips like you would with a lip liner, then fill them in entirely. For a cool ombre look, you might want to go a bit lighter on the color toward the center of your lips. It'll show up slightly redder.

Now pick out one of your berry-colored lip glosses and use a lip brush to smooth it on and blend, blend, blend. This should get rid of any obvious black lines that may be lurking underneath.

You'll end up with a dark pout that's a pretty good indicator of how you'd look rocking the trend. Are you into it?

How to make your bobby pins a whole lot cooler

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

Could your bobby pins use a bit more pizzazz? When you think of bobby pins, you probably imagine a bunch of boring brown pins that are meant to hide in your hair, holding intricate updos in place. It used to be that visible bobby pins were a fashion faux pas, but these days they're showing up all over the place – no more hiding!

From Diane Kruger to Emma Stone, stars have been seen with bobby-pinned hairstyles on the red carpet, and beauty gurus everywhere are loving the look. Whether you place several in a row to hold back side-swept bangs, criss-cross them in X-shapes all around your head or get even more creative with those pins and your trusty hairspray, there's no doubt that these accessories are chicer than ever.

But brown is pretty boring, right? While you can definitely find snazzy, colorful pins at a beauty supply store, a DIY solution is hiding right in your makeup stash. All you need is some bright or sparkly nail polish!

Seeing as you probably have a bunch of awesome shades to match a variety of outfits, you should have no problem matching your bobby pins to your ensembles. Just use the polish to coat one side of each pin, let them dry for a few hours and turn them over to paint the other side. When they're all dry, you'll have yourself a few great new accessories to rock. Cute!

Hair trend alert: the braided top knot

Friday, September 21st, 2012

Transform your bun into a braided top knot!In case you haven't noticed, there are two major hair trends that have been getting attention all summer long. That's the chic top knot and the cool, intricate braid. Both of these styles are great on their own, but can you imagine the awesomeness that ensues when you combine them into the same hairstyle? The braided top knot not only looks fabulous, but it's not as hard to do as it looks.

There are two ways that you can pull this look off – one involves braiding the front version near your hairline, while the other braids the section of hair underneath the bun on the back of your head. Either way looks great, and it's up to you which one you want to pull off.

Start with a little texturizing cream, then French braid your hair. You can do it as you normally would if you're braiding the top, but if you're doing the lower section on the back of your head, it may help to lie on your bed or a couch and hang your head off the edge (with your face toward the floor) so you get better access.

Stop braiding when you get to the point where the bun will be and secure it with a small elastic. A spritz of hairspray will keep it in place so you can put your hair into a bun as you normally would, whether it's with pins, a sock or an elastic. Done!

Top 10 fall makeup trends to get you in the autumnal spirit

Wednesday, September 12th, 2012

Here are 10 of this fall's hottest makeup trends!Chances are, you had a ton of fun this summer playing with the season’s neon eyeshadow colors, shimmery bronzers and bold lipsticks. But who says that the excitement has to end now that fall’s almost here? While you won’t be using all the same bright shades and summery applications, there are plenty of awesome makeup trends to rock this season. Here are 10 to try out A.S.A.P.!

1. Dark lipstick. Whether it’s black cherry or plum, Allure Magazine points out that dark, vampy lips are super hot for fall. When paired with a neutral blush and eyeshadow combination, it really makes your pout pop. Buff your lips to get rid of flakes, apply clear lip balm, then try using Jane Iredale – PureMoist LipColour SPF 18 in Bridget.

2. Natural, rosy cheeks. Elle Magazine reports that one makeup artist said “It’s the look after a morning of skiing, an hour in a hot tub or some good sex.” Concentrate a cream blush (or even a lipstick if you want serious color) on the apples of your cheeks and blend well for a soft finish.

3. Purple smoky eyes. Yes, black and gray are standbys when it comes to bold smoky eyes, but purple looks pretty and unexpected. Use a light shade across your entire lids, then elaborate the color with a richer shade in the crease and along your upper and lower lash lines. Finish with plenty of black mascara, then line your inner rims with black eyeliner.

4. Green eyeshadow. According to Allure, the type of green you should be going for is an emerald jewel tone or one that’s deep and sexy – not neon or grassy. Try using a charcoal or gunmetal eyeshadow first, then apply Youngblood – Crushed Mineral Eyeshadow in Spruce on top. A slightly winged-out shape is chic.

5. A fresh, natural face. While this look is usually reserved for spring, Harper’s Bazaar Magazine points out that undone skin made an appearance on fall runways. You’ll need a foundation and concealer that matches your skin tone perfectly, then shades of blush, highlighter and bronzer that are fairly similar for a somewhat monochromatic look. The BORGHESE – Bella Colore Minerali Face Kit can give you what you’re looking for.

6. Souped-up cat eyes. A little eyeliner flick at the outer corners is always stylish, but if you really want to go for the gusto this fall, make yours a bit more noticeable. Try carrying your liner farther up your lids or going farther past the outer corners. Just be sure to keep the rest of your makeup toned down – this look is intense!

7. Colorful French manicures. Forget about white – Elle reports that colorful French manicures are the way to go this fall. Try deep shades like Lippmann Collection – Razzle Dazzle Nail Lacquer for an autumnal vibe or get a little wild with a glittery shade.

8. Big, bold lashes. Cosmopolitan Magazine suggests that you should always go for drama in the lash department. Use falsies to get super extended lashes or try volumizing and lengthening mascara formulas for glamorous fringe.

9. Groomed brows. This season’s brows (which are equally perfect for any time of year) frame your face beautifully and aren’t pencil thin – they should be pretty thick. Use a brow pencil to fill in any sparse areas and tame them with a brow gel for control.

10. Under-eyeliner. According to Cosmopolitan, under-liner is hot this season. Try using a black eyeliner along your upper lash line, then add a pop of color with Pixi – Endless Silky Eye Pen along the lower lash lines.
