Still haven’t found the perfect nail polish dotting tool?

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Still haven't found the perfect nail polish dotting tool? You may have a nearly full set of Lippmann collection accessories, but have you found the perfect tools for creating those intricate details that are so popular in today's nail art craze? There are some products out there that can make it easier to get straight lines, crackle effects and even magnetic designs – but what about dots?

Luckily, The Beauty Department found a solution. While it's possible to create your own dotting tool by sticking a pin into a pencil's eraser, not everyone has these materials on hand. But if you own a mechanical pencil, or even a regular pencil, you're golden!

Just use the tip of the pencil to dip into your colorful nail polishes, then lightly press it onto your nails wherever you think a dot would look appropriate. An all-over polka dot pattern would be fun, as would dots just on the tips – or maybe along one side of each nail. See what happens when you use different pencils – regular wooden ones might give you different sized dots depending on how sharp they are, which could open up a new realm of possibilities!

Three ways to rock half-moon manicures this fall

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

Half-moon manicures are going to be hot this fall!If you're looking for a cute new manicure idea that's edgy and cool without being too out-there, the half-moon mani is it. And the best part is that it's easy to create and you can choose color combinations for any setting, from the office to the club. Here are three ideas to check out this fall.

1. Metallic and black. It's up to you whether you choose silver, gold, bronze, copper or any other metallic shade of glittery nail lacquer, but mix it with black! Paint your entire nail with two coats of black and let it dry. Afterward, use tape, nail stickers or hole reinforcement labels from your local office supply store to section off the half-moon shape at the top. Paint inside the shape, let dry and finish with top coat.

2. Nude and navy. For a classy look that's perfect to pair with fall's darker fashions, try this chic color combo. Instead of painting the nude-colored half moons on top of the navy, you might want to section that area off first, paint the navy, then do the nude in the space leftover.

3. Oxblood and chestnut. These shades are hot this season, so there's no doubt that your nails will be totally en vogue. Pick up a rich maroon shade and a light brown, then use the brown on the half-moon shaped area. Finish with a shiny top coat and you're done!

Have you tried magnetic nail polish yet?

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

Have you tried magnetic nail polish yet?Remember when crackle-coated nails were all the rage? While those are still totally in style now that nail art is huge, magnetic nail polish has recently been showing up everywhere. These polishes are infused with tiny metallic particles that create awesome 3D designs on your nails when you run a magnet over them. And the best part is that you don't even have to go searching for a magnet – they're in the cap!

So how do you pull off this chic metallic mani? First, make sure your nails are completely clear of old polish and oil with a product like Lippmann Collection – The Stripper to go. This will make sure the polish sticks to your nails. Now apply one coat of base coat and wait until it's dry.

Paint on one coat of the magnetic polish, but don't use the magnet yet. Applying this first coat will just ensure that the color won't look streaky. After two or three minutes, paint a thicker coat of the metallic polish on your first nail, then immediately hold the magnetic cap close to it (but not touching). Hold it there for about 10 seconds to create a cool design, then repeat the process on the rest of your nails.

When you're done, seal the deal with a quick-dry top coat and you have yourself a futuristic manicure!

How to make this summer’s neon makeup work for fall

Monday, September 17th, 2012

Still want to rock summer's neon makeup? No problem! Now that summer's almost over, you probably won't be rocking the same wild shades of orange, yellow, pink and green that were practically staples this past season. (But if you will be, more power to you!) If you want to transition your neon shades from summer to fall, you'll have to get a little creative with your layering skills. Here's how.

If you shamelessly wore hot pink lipstick over the summer, there's no need to retire it until next year. According to BellaSugar.com, you can use the same hue now if you layer a more subdued shade on top, like a mauve lipstick, perhaps.

As for eyeshadows and bright eyeliners, you can use the same ones you relied on during the summer if you pair them with darker shades of the same hue. For example, use an emerald green eyeshadow over a lime one, or brush a navy blue eyeshadow over your aqua eyeliner.

When it comes to nails, you can always get away with neon on your toes. But for fingers, try mixing your polishes with shades of gray to discover fun neutrals.

How to recreate the pointed half-moon manicures from the Tracy Reese runway

Friday, September 14th, 2012

Want the fabulous nails from the Tracy Reese show? Here's how to get them!If you're looking for a new nail art look to try, New York Fashion Week's got you covered. While the huge designers were showing off their fashion skills, top manicurists were getting equally creative with the designs they sent down the runways. The Tracy Reese show was no exception – according to Allure Magazine, the pointed half-moon manicures that the models rocked were totally drool-worthy. Here's how to create them yourself.

The half-moon refers to the semicircle at the top of your nail, near your cuticle, which is whiter than the rest of your nail. You'll be focusing on this area when it comes time to create the look.

But first you'll need to use a base coat as usual, then choose a color for the main portion of your nail. You'll want the two colors to be complementary, which shouldn't be too hard to find with so many nail polishes to choose from. Paint on two thin coats.

When that's completely dry (which should take about 30 minutes), use scotch tape to outline a triangle shape at the top of each nail. Stick it on your hand first to get rid of the stickiness, which might rip off the polish underneath when removed. Then just fill in the triangle with your second color, let dry and paint on a top coat. Done!

How to get the nail polish look from the 3.1 Phillip Lim fashion show

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

Here's how to get the hot nails from the 3.1 Phillip Lim show!As you may have noticed, New York Fashion Week has been popping out plenty of fabulous ideas for fashion, hair and makeup. While not every look would work in real life (some of those 'dos and styles are totally out-there), the nail fashion that showed up on the models at the 3.1 Phillip Lim show is definitely doable. Here's the how-to.

According to Glamour Magazine's beauty blog, the stylists at the show used a toffee-colored nail polish and a gray tone to get the look. You can find both colors in the Lippmann Collection – Nail Lacquers line, or test out your own combination. Neutral shades are great for the office, but there's no reason why you can't get bolder on the weekends!

Just paint your nails with a base coat like Lippmann Collection – Rehydrating Base Coat With Aloe Vera, then apply two coats of the first color you're using all over the nail. When that's completely dry (which should take about 30 minutes), apply a piece of tape to each nail with one edge going straight down the middle. It helps to stick the tape on your hand first so it's not too sticky – this could damage the polish underneath.

Now just paint the exposed side of the nail with the other color, take the tape off when it's dry and apply a top coat. Chic, no?

Have you ever heard of ikat print?

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

Ikat print is chic - especially on your nails!Sure, you've heard of leopard print and zebra print, but what about ikat print? Before you start picturing some kind of jungle animal called an ikat, you should know that this pattern can't be found on a living creature's coat. It's just a textile dyeing technique that looks pretty cool – especially on your nails.

According to Glamour Magazine's beauty blog, ikat print is pretty easy to pull off yourself with a little bit of practice and a great set of polishes from Lippmann Collection – Nail Lacquers.

First, paint your nails with a base coat to even out ridges and give your colors something to stick to. Then choose a shade that'll be the background and paint on two coats.

When the background is dry, choose another color and make one, two or three big blobs of color on the nail (with plenty of space in between). They should be a bit uneven – perfectly symmetrical isn't what you're going for here.

Now use the background color to make a smaller blob in the middle of each of the blobs you just painted, creating what looks like rings. Finally, choose a third color and make small blobs in the center of the second blobs, then use that same final shade to create a feathered outline around each of the blobs (the ones you made first).

Finish with a top coat, then fix any mistakes with Lippmann Collection – The Stripper. Chic, right?

How to look the part for an important interview

Wednesday, August 8th, 2012

With these tips, you should have no problem scoring that job!If you have experience, knowledge and a great work ethic, you shouldn’t have much to worry about when it comes to nailing an interview, but how can you seal the deal? While your qualifications are important, first impressions are also up there on a hiring manager’s checklist. The state of your clothes, hygiene, hair and makeup can make or break your chances of landing the job, so preparation is crucial. Here’s how to primp yourself for an interview and hopefully snag that position!

Fashion
What you wear to an interview largely depends on the type of industry you’re hoping to enter. Some companies require super-formalwear, while others have a casual vibe and still more offer plenty of fashion creativity to its employees. If you visited the business before your interview, you probably saw what everyone was wearing, so try to copy their style. When in doubt, overdressing never hurts – it shows that you’re professional no matter what.

Make sure your clothes are clean and unwrinkled first and foremost. They should also fit properly – anything too baggy or too tight will look sloppy. Opt for a tailored pantsuit or a skirt and blouse, choosing colors and shapes that flatter your complexion and speak volumes about your personality. Keep jewelry and accessories to a minimum to avoid seeming too flashy.

Hair
The style you choose to rock for your interview can be whatever you think looks best on you, whether it’s a chignon, ponytail, blowout or a pixie cut. The most important thing is that the style looks polished, which means that there shouldn’t be any flyaways. You can tame those frizzies with a product like Leonor Greyl – Serum de Soie Sublimateur (Anti-frizz).

Nails
Most likely, you’ll be shaking the interviewer’s hand at some point, so he or she will get a good glimpse of the state of your nails. If you’re not one for nail polish, at least make sure that your tips are filed into a neat shape and that they’re as clean as possible. It might also be a good idea to use a hand cream like AHAVA – Leave-on Deadsea Mud Dermud Intensive Hand Cream so your hands are soft to the touch.

If you’re a gal who loves a good manicure, keep your polish choices simple. While bright colors and cool designs are trendy, they’re usually not appropriate for a job interview, especially for a position in a serious industry. Stick to nudes or pastel pinks from Lippmann Collection – Nail Lacquers, which will flatter and elongate your fingers.

Makeup
Even if you just discovered the perfect smoky eye palette or a bright new shade of lipstick, it’s best to keep your makeup understated for an interview. You want to complement your features, not overwhelm them. To ensure that you start off with a good base, get a good night’s sleep before the big day, which can minimize dark circles and puffiness under your eyes, as well as redness or dull skin.

Begin your makeup application with a great primer like Too Faced – Primed & Poreless Pure Oil-Free Skin Smoothing Face Primer For Sensitive Skin, which will even out your complexion and make your look last throughout the day. Then apply a foundation that matches your skin tone perfectly.

Contour your cheekbones with a rosy blush and a natural-looking bronzer without shimmer, like Too Faced – Peach Leopard Brightening & Perfecting Bronzer. A dab of highlighter on your cheekbones will give you a healthy glow.

Use a black or brown eyeliner pencil to define the shape of your eyes and darken your lash lines, then follow up with a neutral eyeshadow combination – brown is a safe bet. Use a medium shade across your entire lid, a dark shade in the crease and along your lash lines and a light shade on your brow bones. Add a coat of a brown or black mascara like Jane Iredale – PureLash Lengthening Mascara.

Finish with a coat of a neutral pink lip gloss or lipstick, and you’re ready to rock that interview!

How to copy Jessica Biel’s nails from the Total Recall premiere

Thursday, August 2nd, 2012

Jessica's platinum nails are easy to do yourself!Jessica Biel is now engaged to Justin Timberlake, and judging by the way she chose to paint her nails for the Hollywood premiere of Total Recall, she's pretty excited about it. To show off that gorgeous platinum sparkler with its many diamonds, she chose to amp up her digits with a matte nude polish and platinum tips. So how can you get this look yourself?

First, you'll need to paint your nails with a base coat that will provide a barrier between your nails and the polish. If your nails are bumpy or full of ridges, a polish like Lippmann Collection – Ridge Filler Base Coat will mask them with ease.

Now choose a nude shade of nail polish that matches your skin tone, or go a little more pink for a sweeter vibe. Paint on two coats, waiting about two minutes between each one so the polish will have time to dry.

When that polish is no longer sticky, make it matte with a coat of Lippmann Collection – Flat Top Matte-Maker Top Coat. This will get rid of the shine.

After that's dry, finish by painting the tips of your nails with a platinum metallic color. Go over just the tips with a top coat when you're done.
