Ingrown Hair SOS!

Tuesday, June 30th, 2015

Ingrown Hair SOS!There’s nothing more irritating — not to mention painful — than discovering an unsightly ingrown hair has set up shop underneath your skin. Ingrown hairs are raised, pus-filled red bumps that occur when dead skin becomes trapped inside the hair follicle, forcing the hair to grow underneath the skin. Though sometimes, ingrown hairs, just like zits, can go away in their own time, if left to their own devices for too long there is a chance they could become infected and lead to scarring. So remember: hands off! We’ll show you the steps and products you’ll need to banish ingrown hairs for good.

Often, the best way to treat ingrown hairs is to prevent them from showing up in the first place. This means taking your time when shaving, and using a high-quality shaving cream. For ladies, I like the Whish Coconut Milk Shave Cream with Hair Inhibitor, which is perfect for sensitive skin and is formulated to ensure it won’t dry out skin. For the gentlemen, I’d recommend anything from The Art of Shaving, especially their luxurious Sandalwood Essential Oil Shaving Cream. If you really want to indulge, treat yourself to a complete shaving overhaul by picking up their Starter Kit, which includes a shaving brush, pre-shave oil, shaving cream, and aftershave balm. If you want to go the extra mile, you can even apply Dermalogica’s Pre-Shave Guard before you get started. It’s marketed towards men, but women can certainly benefit from it as well. Of course, certain types of hair, especially coarse and curly locks, are more prone to ingrown hairs than finer strands.

After shaving, immediately apply a balm to the area. I have two favorites to ensure post-shaving bliss. The first is Dermalogica’s Post-Shave Balm, which is formulated to specifically prevent ingrown hairs and is fragrance-free. If I’m in the mood for something a bit scented, I slather on Shaveworks’ Cool Fix, which helps to free trapped hair as well as to kill any bacteria underneath the skin.

Still, sometimes you can do everything right and still get an ingrown hair, especially if you have sensitive skin. If one shows up, we recommend not trying to dig it out yourself. If you just can’t resist, be sure to place a hot towel on the affected area to open the pores and soothe the skin, then remove the hair with tweezers like the ones in this Anthony grooming tool kit. Still, it’s really better to see a doctor, who may recommend antibiotics or other medication to reduce swelling and prevent infection.

Don’t let an ingrown hair get in the way of a day at the beach this summer!

5 Ways to Use Honey as a Beauty Product

Friday, June 19th, 2015

Not only does honey taste great, but it also has a wide range of skin and hair benefits. Honey, which is a natural humectant, so it has the ability to attract and retain moisture, making it the perfect addition to your beauty regimen. It is packed with antioxidants, nutrients and healing compounds which help to moisturize, fight bacteria and fight the signs of aging. Here are 5 “head to toe” ways to utilize the benefits of honey.

5 Ways to Use Honey as a Beauty ProductBath Soak
There is nothing more relaxing than soaking in a hot bath, but when you add honey to the warm water, you will also reap the rewards of softer, healthier skin. For skin that is as smooth and soft as Cleopatra’s, mix 2 cups of milk, 1/2 cup of honey and a few drops of essential lavender oil. Add to a hot bath and soak for as long as you wish.

Hydrate Dry Cuticles
If your hands are starting to show a few signs of aging, reach for the honey to transform your dry hands into softer, more youthful looking and feeling hands. To hydrate dry cuticles, mix 1 teaspoon each of honey, coconut oil and apple cider vinegar. Massage the mixture over each cuticle, let it sit for about ten minutes and rinse in lukewarm water. For added softness on your hands, gently massage an even mixture of honey and coconut oil into your hands and let it soak in while soaking your cuticles, rinse well and pat hands dry.

Skin Clarifying
Raw honey is packed with enzymes that will help clean and clear pores and the antioxidants are excellent for preventing a buildup of bacteria that may cause breakouts and skin imbalance. To deep clean pores, mix one tablespoon of raw honey with two tablespoons of coconut oil and stir to a smooth consistency. Apply the mixture to clean, dry skin by gently massaging in a circular motion. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.

Acne Treatment
Acne is not only embarrassing, but it can also be extremely difficult to get rid of. Many people attempt to get rid of acne by using products that dry their skin out, but in reality, this only makes the problem worse. Honey contains natural anti-fungal and antibacterial properties that help to reduce the inflammation, irritation and redness, without drying your skin out. Make a honey mask with a mixture of 3 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and 1/2 tablespoon of milk. Mix ingredients until smooth, apply to face and relax for about 20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. The coconut oil helps draw the impurities out of your skin, while the honey and milk smooths your skin and kills the bacteria.

Shampoo and Conditioner Booster
The nutrients and natural enzymes in raw honey will give your hair shine and bounce, without weighing it down. To strengthen your hair, while adding fullness and shine; mix 1/2 tablespoon of raw honey to your usual shampoo and rinse well. Add one tablespoon of honey and one tablespoon of coconut oil to your usual conditioner, applying thoroughly to the bottom half of damp hair, starting with the ends and working up. Let the mixture remain in your hair for about 20 minutes and rinse well.

There are several types and brands of honey to choose from, but the best honey for your health and to use as beauty products is raw honey. Raw honey has not been treated, so it contains more natural enzymes and antibacterial properties.

Brand Spotlight – Lavanila

Brand Spotlight - LavanilaPrepare to be body-pampered and skin-nourished! Lavanila produces effective luxury beauty products based on plants and other natural ingredients that support what skin truly needs. The company’s name “Lavanila” comes from the word for vanilla on the island of Madagascar, where much of the world’s vanilla is produced. Vanilla is used in many of Lavanila’s products because it is a powerful antioxidant as well as an aromatherapy ingredient that comforts and soothes.

Not only are these formulations ideal for people with sensitive skin, but the products have a delightful fragrance without being cloying or overpowering. They work by allowing skin to breathe and utilize the benefits of their natural ingredients, as opposed to those that smother the skin. The company also has fragrance-free versions of its deodorant and body butter.

Lavanila does no animal testing and labels items that are gluten-free. Some of the chemicals they do not use include silicon, phthalates, aluminum, parabens, synthetic dyes, and propylene glycol — all of which are listed in most beauty products sold through retail outlets ranging from drug stores to high-end exclusive department stores.

The founder of Lavanila, Danielle Raynor, made a career of trying beauty products from every type of retail store. She wanted toxin-free items for her daughters and realized that even high-priced luxury brands contained ingredients to be avoided. Danielle was also allergic to traditionally-formulated perfumes, so she worked with chemists to develop fragrances that did not include ingredients that exacerbated allergy symptoms.

Lavanila began selling its products in 2007 when it offered the first organic fragrance in the industry. The company developed a sugar-based alcohol for its perfumes, and savvy women everywhere welcomed the skin-friendliness of the formulations and the exclusive combinations of essential oils for a truly personal signature fragrance. Packaging included regular sizes and a mini roll-on to tuck into an evening bag.

Other items intentionally designed to nourish and protect skin include aluminum-free deodorants with essential oils — also available in mini sizes for travel — and sunscreen that keeps harsh chemicals away from sensitive areas. Consider the possibility of actually enjoying using sunscreen because it has an amazing smell and nourishes skin with its vitamins!

Discerning women around the world are taking control of what they put on their skin, and the products from Lavanila are helping them revitalize their bodies through the best of nature.

Spring Sunscreen 101

Spring Sunscreen 101In spring the danger of sun damage may be unexpected if the weather is still cool. While the rays of the sun are not as powerful as they are during the summer months, prolonged exposure will nonetheless harm unprotected skin. To avoid a spring sunburn, keep this information in mind:

There Is No Such Thing As A Waterproof Sunscreen

So-called “Waterproof” sunscreens are deceptive because sweat, water, and most other types of moisture will cause them to wash off. Instead of falling for this marketing ploy, consider sunscreens that use the more realistic descriptive “Water Resistant”. A good water resistant one like this sunscreen from PCA Skin will help keep the protection on longer than ordinary sunscreens.

SPF Can Be Deceiving

Though the SPF numbers come in a wide variety of ranges, the higher numbers do not actually block rays longer. The SPF number only refers to the percentage of rays blocked. This means an SPF 30 sunscreen will allow only 1/30th of the sun’s rays to reach the skin. It does not mean that it will last 30 times longer than SPF one, so it will need to be reapplied as directed on the container.

Even Cloudy Spring Days Can Cause Sun Damage

A common assumption is that when it is cloudy, there is no danger of sun damage. Much of the solar intensity on cloudy days has to do with the type of clouds involved. The sun’s rays can pass through thinner clouds, while it is mostly blocked by thicker clouds. Even in the spring when the rays are not as damaging, it is a good idea to just apply sunscreen instead of trying to figure out if the clouds above are thick enough to block solar damage.

Sunscreen Is All That Is Necessary To Avoid Sun Damage

Of course sunscreens are good idea when spring rolls around, but it should not substitute for common sense. When wearing swim apparel outdoors, it is a good idea to cover up or find shade when not in the water. It is always wise to use clothing to help prevent sun damage along with a sunscreen.

The spring is a great time of year with all the budding plants, warmer temperatures, and longer days. Just be sure to use a good sunscreen to avoid hidden sun damage.

Spring Clean Your Skin

Spring Clean Your SkinLooking good gives you the confidence to best ensure you are able to succeed in both your business and personal life. While you can try new cosmetics and different hairstyles, getting to the base of your appearance is the best way to ensure you always look your best. This season, take the time to spring clean your skin following these helpful tips.

Electrotherapy

With technology expanding, we are constantly witnessing the introduction of new and exciting innovation, and this stands true in the area of personal aesthetics. We all crave an smooth, even tone, and you can now achieve that goal with the use of electrotherapy. Products such as the Innovative Facial Toner have been approved by the FDA and are open for consumer purchase. These devices are able to target facial muscles susceptible to atrophy after age 30, and they help slow down the development of wrinkles. For less than $200, you can purchase one at Beauty Bridge.

Fun Without the Sun

Whether you have exceptionally pale skin or just wish to add a sun-kissed glow to your appearance, it can be tempting to go use a tanning bed or hit the beach for a session. While this may temporarily increase your aesthetic appeal, the long-term effects are not worth it. Aside from skin cancer, excessive exposure to the sun can also cause wrinkles, freckles, fine lines, and discoloration. However, this does not mean you can’t enjoy the boost a tan provides. Purchase a bronzer. It is applied like foundation and gives you that sun-kissed look without the dangers.

Treat Yourself

A little attention can do a lot for your appearance, and treating your skin to a spa-day at home can provide nourishment that will leave you feeling refreshed. First, identify what type of skin you have, and then purchase a mask that is appropriate for you. For example, if you have normal skin, a botanical mask would be suitable. Other skin types include:

  • Oily skin: opt for a mud mask
  • Dry skin: choose an avocado mask

Despite your skin type, there is a mask anyone can make at home and use. Simply combine one cup of oatmeal and two tablespoons of honey and stir in warm water. Apply and allow mixture to sit for ten minutes for a noticeable boost.

Refresher

While our regular beauty regimen is beneficial, taking the time to employ further techniques is a great way to both look and feel great. An effective way to refresh your skin after a busy day is to mix one part alcohol with six parts water and place it in a spray bottle. A quick spritz will leave you feeling energized and rejuvenated.

Medical Grade vs. Regular Skincare

Medical Grade vs. Regular SkincareEveryone wants the youthful glow of beautiful skin; however, achieving that smooth, healthy look can be hard to do. As skin care develops, the market is overloaded with products promising to provide the answers. Many are wading through the excess looking for the right product, while some are turning to skincare products developed by dermatologists. But what’s the difference?

Regular, or over the counter, skincare products are available to everyone. The concentrations of their effective ingredients are relatively low and fairly gentle. Over the counter skincare aids have the benefit of being both inexpensive and widely varied. Most major companies have products which can be found in any drugstore and cater to all skin types. Some regular skincare products are even able to treat mild cases of skin conditions such as eczema and acne. The downside of a regular skincare aid is the guesswork. Establishing an effective regimen may require months of trial and error, while you mix and match products in order to create a process that works for you. If you are not careful, you could aggravate your skin and exacerbate any problems you may have.

Some people who find that regular skincare just can’t cope with their needs report success with their medical grade prescription. Medical grade skincare products are developed by dermatologists and have stronger formulas than OTC skincare. They can be purchased online, but it is recommended that you consult a dermatologist before you buy; misuse can be damaging to your skin. For those with extreme cases of acne, eczema, or psoriasis, and even those simply looking to reverse the signs of aging, these products can be a lifesaver. However, they can also be expensive and are sometimes harsh on the delicate skin of your face.

The most important element of skincare is knowing what your skin needs to be healthy. Diet, exercise, and hormone levels can be just as critical as biological factors when it comes to your skin’s health. Try increasing your water intake, or getting more sleep before you change your skincare regimen. To avoid frustration when choosing an over the counter skincare aid, do research before purchasing – know your skin type, read product reviews, and have an idea of what you are looking for before you shop. If you are still unsure, or are interested in designer brands, visit your local department store and ask a consultant; they may be able to assemble the right products for you, or at least give good advice. If you are truly concerned about your skin, meet with a dermatologist to determine if medical grade products can be the next step.

Wintertime Skin Repair

Wintertime Skin Repair

Repair Your Skin When It’s Cold Out

The colder winter months make an excellent opportunity to repair and revitalize your skin every year. This is because excessive sun exposure during the wintertime is generally minimized. While the sun is undeniably beautiful and pleasant at times, exposure to it can often be extremely problematic to skin, especially as far as the aging process goes. Thankfully, the winter months give people the chance to repair and restore the skin, whether they have problems with stretchmarks, uneven tone, acne scars or anything else.

Skin Restoration

If you want to restore your skin in the winter, you might be interested in a product Bio-Body Bio-Restorative Cream from Neocutis. This cream aims to make the skin on the body look and appear firmer, more supple and more resilient. It also aims to give the body a brighter and healthier look. If your skin tends to look dull and lackluster, then you might want to look into a restorative cream such as this one. This type of product can also be highly effective for hydrating dry skin, as it contains soothing ceramides that replenish the body’s moisture barrier. While the winter months can be excellent for skin repair, the frigid temperatures can often introduce unsightly skin dryness. If you suffer from dehydrated skin in the wintertime, this type of cream can be helpful as it contains salicylic acid that exfoliates. The salicylic acid does away with dead skin cells that give the skin an uneven, flaky and rough appearance.

Gorgeous Skin Free of Dullness and Flakes

If you want to promote youthful looking skin on your body in the wintertime, the 5 Minute Weekly Glycolic Peel from StriVectinLABS is one option to consider. This glycolic peel works to energize the skin via exfoliation. If you want to breathe new life into tired and dry skin in the wintertime, this product might be able to help you out. Not only can glycolic peels be beneficial for keeping the skin smooth and devoid of pesky dry patches and spots, but they can also be beneficial for making the pores look smaller and for decreasing the appearance of unwelcome wrinkles and fine lines.

Goodbye to Signs of Aging on the Skin

Products with retinol like Neocutis’ Nouvelle + Retinol Correction Cream can also be useful for keeping the skin looking youthful and wrinkle-free all year long, as it decreases fine lines and keeps the complexion looking soft and even. Many people appreciate products like this one because they don’t tend to cause irritation.

Caviar- An Anti-Aging Jewel of the Sea

Friday, January 16th, 2015

Caviar- An Anti-Aging Jewel of the SeaCaviar is famous as a gourmet food that has been long treasured by wealthy people around the world. Not everyone knows, however, that this food also has some significant health and anti-aging benefits. Caviar is made from fish eggs, also known as sturgeon roe, that are salt-cured. As a food, it has an extremely salty and fishy flavor that some people like better than others. What is it about caviar that could hold the secrets to a more youthful appearance?

Nutritional Benefits of Caviar

When consumed as a food, caviar has quite a few vitamins and other nutrients. One of the best things about this food is that it’s a good source of healthy omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which support heart health. Caviar also supply Vitamins A, C and E, which are all antioxidants and beneficial for maintaining a healthy immune system. It’s also rich in zinc, which is another immune system booster. On the other hand, caviar is a fairly high calorie food, so it’s not the best choice for people on a diet. Fortunately, there are additional benefits to caviar, that don’t require you to eat it regularly.

Caviar as a Skin Care Agent

Caviar has recently become known as a valuable ingredient in skin care products. It is now used in many high end spas. Hollywood celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Mick Jagger and Gwyneth Paltrow have publicly touted its benefits as a way to detoxify and revitalize the skin. Caviar can be made into an extremely beneficial facial. The same healthy fatty acids that make caviar healthy to eat also provide benefits to the skin. How does this help the average person, though, who doesn’t have access to Beverly Hills spas? Fortunately, there are products on the market that allow anyone to enjoy the anti-aging qualities of caviar and other anti-aging ingredients.

Finding Effective Anti-Aging Products

If you are seeking anti-aging products containing caviar, you may have to do a little research, as this is something that is only starting to become popular. There are a few products on the market, such as BABOR Sea Creation, which contains caviar as well as other beneficial marine ingredients such as algae and seaweed. Algae has been shown to support cell regeneration and the production of elastin, which helps reduce wrinkles and other signs of aging. Seaweed has natural anti-inflammatory properties that make it a natural exfoliant. Seaweed is also a good acne remedy.

When choosing anti-aging products, you shouldn’t simply look for one ingredient, but consider the reputation of the brand and product. Maintaining a youthful appearance involves many factors, including your diet and lifestyle. The right anti-aging products, however, can be very helpful at keeping your skin radiant and young looking.
