If you have an unnatural hair color, chances are, you aren’t anxious to tell other people that it isn’t real. However, the secret can come out once your roots begin to grow. Depending on the color you dyed your hair, it might also start to fade sooner than you’d like. Here are some tips for maintaining your ‘do and keeping up its appearance.

1. Stay out of the sun
Ultraviolet rays can cause your hair color to fade, according to Marie Claire magazine. Try to wear a hat if you intend to sit in direct sunlight for an extended period of time.

2. Avoid washing your hair on the day you dye it
To make sure that your dye has a chance to adhere to your locks, Ladies’ Home Journal magazine recommends avoiding shampoo and conditioner on the day that it’s colored.

3. Rinse with cold water
There’s no rule that says you need to use cold water in the shower if you have colored hair, but it helps maintain the hue for longer, Try to at least rinse the shampoo and conditioner out of your locks in cool water.
