How many times have you come across facial makeup and moisturizers that contain SPF and asked yourself what this means? If you aren’t sure how ultraviolet rays and the sun affect your skin, you may want to do your homework as you continue to purchase SPF cosmetics!

SPF stands for sun protection factor, and even though you might commonly associate it with tanning lotion, it’s being seen on more makeup labels. This is because cosmetics experts are realizing the importance of containing SPF in their products to prevent signs of aging in users.

The Skin Cancer Foundation claims that SPF 15 or higher tends to be the most efficient at protecting against the effects of ultraviolet rays, some of which may eventually cause cancer. Everyone age 6 months and older is advised to use some form of sunscreen on exposed areas of their skin on a daily basis.

As you look for new foundations, concealers and lipsticks, consider finding items that specifically say they include SPF. This can give you peace of mind every time you put on your makeup. Furthermore, you may just be able to avoid a few more wrinkles by taking this precautionary measure.

About Lia Marchand

Shayna Murphy is a beauty blogger from Amherst, Massachusetts, who can trace her love of beauty products back to the one afternoon when she convinced her grandmother to buy her lime green nail polish. She enjoys cooking (Indian-style dishes are a specialty!), is a bit of a history buff and collects antique milk vases. Shayna reports on the latest makeup, skincare and fashion trends and will try to convince you on a regular basis that yes, you really should wear sunscreen daily. My favorite beauty product is... - Anything containing sea salt. It's probably the most amazing exfoliant I've ever used and it leaves my skin feeling fresh and smoother than ever. Can't leave the house without my... - Lip gloss. The rest of the day can be a total bust, but if I have a great gloss on I feel like at least I've done one thing right! I would describe my style as... - Definitely au naturale. While I love exploring new shades of eyeshadow and liner on special occasions, for me the most important part of any beauty regimen is keeping my skin clear and blemish-free.
