  1. Egg Mask

Eggs are not only the go-to ingredient for cakes, cookies, and all things sweet but a bundle of protein, fatty acids and lecithin. These ingredients in an egg repair the damage and dullness in your hair, resulting in hair that has a tonne of natural moisture, are lustrous and are shiny from root to tips!

One would have never imagined the benefits this small ingredient had and here’s an easy recipe to befriend and use every week:

Mix an egg white with one tablespoon of olive oil and honey. Keep mixing the paste until it is smooth and can be easily applied on your hair. Start the application of the paste from your roots. Carefully part the roots and apply the paste by either using an application brush or oil bottles (the syringe-like ones). Both of these come in the do-it-yourself hair dye kits which can be found anywhere.

After the application of the egg paste, make sure you cover your head with a shower cap for at least 30 minutes. You can then easily rinse the paste with a mild shampoo and cool water.

There are several points to note here. We all know that you love conditioners but do not use a conditioner after this paste because the mixture of egg, olive oil and honey will moisturize your hair and give a natural shine and softness. If you use a conditioner after this egg mask, it will result in a greasy mess, making your hair look oily and flat.

Moreover, remember not to rinse your head with hot water. If you have an egg mask in your hair, and you rinse it with hot water, the mask won’t come off as the hot water clots the egg making it very difficult to wash the mask off.

  1. Mayonnaise Mask

Did you just cringe at the thought of mayonnaise sandwiched in your hair?

I did too when I first heard someone mentioning mayonnaise as a DIY conditioner for shiny hair but upon extensive research and experiments, I have come to the conclusion that mayonnaise cannot only add flavour to our sandwiches but can also add a long-lasting shine in our hair.

It is the most simplest DIY you will ever come across. All you have to do is buy a bottle of mayonnaise or use the one you already have. Since, we are using mayonnaise as a conditioner, you do everything like you would for a normal conditioner.

Wet your hair and apply mayonnaise. Remember to not be overzealous with the amount of mayonnaise you are applying. Use a little amount, just enough for your hair similar to how one uses just a little amount of conditioner. Apply it thoroughly until all your hair, from bottom to top, are saturated in mayonnaise. Cover your hair with a shower cap or plastic bag in order to trap some heat (imagine yourself sitting under the steamer conditioner in a salon getting a deep-conditioning treatment).

Ideally, you should leave mayonnaise on your hair for 15 to 20 minutes, and it would be great if you can keep it for the entire 20 minutes but, if the smell of mayonnaise is not very pleasant to your nostrils, then feel free to rinse it immediately after 15 minutes.

The rinsing process should be simple if you haven’t applied tonnes of mayonnaise (I hope you have left some for your sandwich). Just gently shampoo your hair and remove the mayonnaise. If you are not satisfied at the first attempt and feel some sticky residue, cleanse your hair a second time.

  1. Avocado and Banana Mask

Are you one of those people who never ate an avocado except for in a guacamole dip and always wondered why do people buy so much avocado? Well, I have an answer for you:

To make a moisturiser for their hair.

This simple hair mask with avocado in it should be used once or twice a week to achieve desirable results.

Mash together a ripe avocado and banana, making sure that there aren’t any solid clumps of the fruits left. Mix half a tablespoon of almond oil and stir this mixture to get a smooth paste. Apply this paste on your scalp, massaging thoroughly so that no root is left untouched. Cover your head with a shower cap (by now, you should have already bought a shower cap) and leave it for 30 minutes.

Gently rinse your hair with lukewarm water, then apply shampoo and cleanse your hair. You will have smooth and shiny hair in just a blink of an eye.

  1. Coconut Oil and Honey Mask

Honey is a miracle ingredient and has the capability to heal almost anything. We all remember our grandma’s home remedies and honey would be the answer to everything.

This DIY repair mask uses both miracle ingredients; honey and coconut oil to give flawless results which restores the moisture in your hair and gives a natural shine.

All you have to do is, mix one table of coconut oil with one tablespoon of honey. 1. Strawberry Mask

Another version of a coconut oil and honey mask is to mix strawberries in them.

Strawberries rule our hearts because they are just so amazing and tasty. Strawberry ice-cream, strawberry topping, strawberry custard, strawberry shortcake, and what not. So why not use strawberry for a hair mask as well?

This hair mask sucks in the excess oil in your hair which results in a glossy shiny and if your hair is very oily, then, it is recommended to use this DIY at least twice a week.

It only requires you to blend 6-8 fresh strawberries, one tablespoon of coconut oil and honey until a puree is formed. Damp your hair and then evenly apply the mixture. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then rinse it with warm water.

  1. Brown Sugar Mask

Your kitchen is probably going to be empty after making all these masks and your grocery trips are definitely going to increase but look at the bright side – glossy and softer hair without a trip to a salon which would definitely be heavy on the pocket.

This mask is especially for those people who have dry, itchy or flaky scalp as brown sugar tends to remove all the dead cells and restores your original hair texture and shine.

You will need to mix two tablespoons of brown sugar with one tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil. Once there are no solid particles left and sugar has dissolved completely, apply this mixture evenly in your hair. Leave it for 15-20 minutes and then rinse the mask off.

  1. Lemon and Apple Cider Vinegar Mask

If you are a loyal salon-goer and get your hair styled every other day then you are probably noticing that you are losing your hair shine and your hair is becoming weaker. This is because of all the build up from the styling products and conditioners.

This mask is going to get rid of all the product residue, restore your natural hair oils and make them healthier.

Combine one-fourth cup of apple cider vinegar with the grated peel of an entire lemon. Apply the mixture to your hair and let it sit for at least 15 minutes and then rinse. You can let it sit for longer as well but don’t rinse it before 15 minutes. This time allows the ingredients to absorb the excesses of all the non-natural particles from your hair.
