Dry Brushing for Health

As technology advances, there are a variety of options to choose from when investing in one’s health and beauty, but sometimes the simplest methods are the most efficient. If silky smooth skin is the goal, and it usually is, one of the best ways to achieve it is through dry brushing. This technique is used at spas throughout the world to brighten and tighten skin, leaving it with a healthy glow, but this practice is perfect for those who prefer to treat themselves at home. Investing just a few minutes a day can help improve circulation, toxin elimination and exfoliation.

Exfoliation
The most obvious benefit of dry brushing is the sloughing away of dead skin cells. By eliminating the rough, dry patches, the skin’s overall appearance will show noticeable improvement. It also preps the epidermis for any further treatment, such as moisturizers or body masks, by removing a barrier and allowing skin care products to penetrate.

Lymphatic Drainage and Cell Renewal
While the body has systems in place that naturally filter and detoxify, dry brushing helps to speed up the process. The pressure of the brush, when moved in the proper direction, pushes the lymph through the body to aid in waste elimination.

Cellulite
Many spas use dry brushing as a part of cellulite treatment. Opinions are varied as to the usefulness of the procedure and whether or not eliminating toxins actually reduces the appearance of cellulite. Some critics claim that the results are only a temporary plumping, but for some clients, even that may be enough.

When dry brushing at home, always start at the feet and work up, using long upward motions towards the heart. A stiff brush with natural bristles is the best choice, but watch that the skin does not become irritated or inflamed and be sure to avoid areas with abrasions or cuts. While it is important that the brush is slightly rough, very little pressure is needed for positive results.

To clean the brush, simply use mild shampoo and warm water, then let it air dry completely to avoid a gathering of bacteria. Dry brushing can make a dramatic difference in any skincare routine and still remain simple and cost effective.
