While smoky eyes are one of the most alluring looks around, some women may be intimidated by the complicated application process. However, makeup artist Sandy Linter recently told O magazine that the perfect smoky eye can be achieved in four simple steps.

According to the news source, start by applying a neutral cream shadow all over the lid and up to the browbone to create a clean, even-toned canvas. Use your finger instead of a wand to avoid a heavy application.

Line your upper lid with a black pencil, staying as close to your lash line as possible. For a smooth finish, Linter advises holding your eyelid taught and drawing dashes along your lash line. Then, use an eyeliner brush to smudge the dashes together to create one, fluid line.

Next, curl your lashes, but don’t brush on mascara until after you’ve applied the shadow. Using a deep violet pigment (which flatters nearly every eye color), dust shadow across the entire lid, applying the most concentrated color at the outside of the lid and lightening the application as you move toward the inner corner.

Remember, when sporting strong eye makeup, keep the rest of your face looking light with little more than a rosy blush and a nude lip gloss.
