The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and that means many revelers around the U.S. are putting together their best red, white and blue outfits to wear to celebrations. Why stop at your clothes? Hair and makeup need just as much attention during this summer holiday.

You already know you’ve got to protect colored hair from the sun, but you should also be on the lookout for ways to show off some makeup tricks when you’re attending a family barbecue or enjoying a day off at the beach.

Many party goers want to look natural for their Independence Day celebrations. You may want to gravitate toward nude makeup for a subdued look, but you can add a dash of fun with bright red lipstick or nail polish in a patriotic color.

If you’re planning on jumping in the water during your party, be sure to prep your skin with body scrubs and exfoliates. These treatments will have your skin feeling clean and refreshed, not to mention primed for tanning time under the sun. Of course, you should always be wearing sunscreen to protect yourself from harmful rays and painful sunburns. Even if this lessens the tan you end the day with, you can always turn to tinted moisturizers to give you a healthy glow.

About Lia Marchand

Shayna Murphy is a beauty blogger from Amherst, Massachusetts, who can trace her love of beauty products back to the one afternoon when she convinced her grandmother to buy her lime green nail polish. She enjoys cooking (Indian-style dishes are a specialty!), is a bit of a history buff and collects antique milk vases. Shayna reports on the latest makeup, skincare and fashion trends and will try to convince you on a regular basis that yes, you really should wear sunscreen daily. My favorite beauty product is... - Anything containing sea salt. It's probably the most amazing exfoliant I've ever used and it leaves my skin feeling fresh and smoother than ever. Can't leave the house without my... - Lip gloss. The rest of the day can be a total bust, but if I have a great gloss on I feel like at least I've done one thing right! I would describe my style as... - Definitely au naturale. While I love exploring new shades of eyeshadow and liner on special occasions, for me the most important part of any beauty regimen is keeping my skin clear and blemish-free.
