Tired of the constant expense of disposable razors, the pain of knicks and cuts, and the constant acrobatic display of flexibility while shaving in a tiny shower? Then it’s time you venture into the smooth world of waxing. If you’re a waxing newbie, here are a few things you need to know to get the most out of your waxing appointment.

Don’t Apply Ice Before Waxing

Having a frozen and numb area sounds appealing, especially if you’re getting a bikini wax. But having ice applied to your skin is actually one of the worst things you can do because the ice is going to constrict your pores. Constriction=tightening, and you don’t want your skin clinging to those hairs any more than they already are. If you’re getting a bikini wax, the last thing you want to see is your technician pull out the tweezers to get out any “difficult” hairs. We’re crossing our legs just thinking about it.

Do Wear Loose Fitting Clothing

Trust us on this one: no matter where you’re being waxed, you don’t want tight clothes rubbing on angry skin. This is especially true if you are getting a bikini wax. Skip the cute undies and go for billowing granny panties. Even better is to go commando under a generously sized skirt. You’ll thank yourself when you’re waddling out of the office. Tight clothes chafe skin raw and can lead to ingrown hairs. If you find yourself getting ingrowns, try an ingrown hair product.

Don’t Shave Between Sessions

If you’re wanting to be a full time waxer, you’re going to have to ditch the razor for good. Your hair will probably come back in thicker after a wax, and if your hair is short and stubbly, the wax isn’t going to be able to remove as much of it, making for a messy and patchy wax job. Keep your waxing appointments consistently, and you won’t feel the need to get a quick shave in between sessions.

Do Take Some Pain Relief

Nobody likes a hero, and you’re not getting any medals by bearing an intense waxing without any medicinal relief. Pop some ibuprofen or acetaminophen 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment. This will help with swelling and discomfort afterwards. You can do this no matter where you’re getting waxed, but seasoned waxees agree this works best when you’re getting body waxed.

Don’t let your first waxing session turn into that “Kelly Clarkson!” moment (you know what we’re talking about). With some proper pre-care and careful care after waxing, you can have a smooth, hair free body without the tears.
