Many believe that eyes are the window to the soul – and if that’s true, your eyeshadow is the drapery. Therefore, you want to choose tones that will enhance, define and complement your eyes. Choosing a shade that works well isn’t as easy as matching one to your eye color. In fact, you might be surprised by which hues make your peepers pop.

Before you swipe any shadow on your lids, follow this guide to find the best shades for you:

Blue
Contrary to what you might think, blue shadow will not bring out the hue of your eyes – in fact, it might compete. Warm neutral shadows that contrast your eye color, like earthy mocha or copper, make your eyes really stand out. That doesn’t mean you can’t opt for cool shades as well, just make sure they’re a few shades away from your eyes on the color spectrum, like slate gray or silver. For daytime, try a wash of champagne with a subtle gold sheen. Go bold with a deep, shimmery bronze at night to create a sultry smoky eye.

Brown
One of the most versatile eye colors, brown allows you to play around with pigment more. However, if you want to rock a shadow that’s the same color as your eyes, be sure that it is a distinctively different shade. For example, an iridescent burnt sienna can complement chocolate eyes, while a sparkly taupe looks stunning on espresso colored eyes. Earth tones are ideal for a daytime look, but feel free to boost the drama at night with navy or a vibrant matte green.

Green
The advantage of this eye color is that you can wear some of the more unusual shadows, like pink and purple. When you’re going for subtlety during the day, reach for neutrals that have pinkish undertones, like beige with a peachy glow or a light rust. Rose gold gives green eyes extra radiance for nighttime. You might also consider a rich plum, which can amplify green peepers. Makeup artist Nick Barose suggested adding a sheer wash of glitter over a dark purple shadow when you’re going for maximum glamour.

Hazel
Since hazel eyes incorporate a variety of different colors, you have a lot of freedom when it comes to shadow. Try starting with a warm brown base and adding a layer of gold to bring out the yellow flecks in your eyes. You can instantly transition this look into night by sweeping the gold pigment along your bottom lashline and swiping on lengthening mascara. Going for higher impact? Consider a striking eggplant or deep bordeaux with a faint shimmer. The possibilities are endless for people with this eye color.
