While fall makeup often involves deep tones and a dramatic application, an autumnal palette can also be used to create a rich but subdued look. Don’t take our word for it – just look to a former reality TV star.

“For Whitney Port’s 2010 American Music Awards makeup, I wanted to do a softer take on the eggplant trend for a more romantic look,” makeup artist Amy Nadine, who created the look, told InStyle magazine.

Port’s makeup boasted a seasonal richness that was anything but severe. The news source reports that Nadine used a matte lavender eyeshadow on her lids and lower lashlines, and added warmth by applying a rose-colored pigment to the crease. She completed the look with a sheer pink blush and a rosy lip.

Women who want to wear toned-down versions of rich autumnal hues should remember to pay attention to the cosmetics’ formula to create a dynamic look.

“When you’re using subtle colors, a contrast in finish – like pairing shiny and matte, or glittery and glossy – can add just the pop you need,” the news outlet reports.
