The first part of this process is psychological. Aside from using old-school techniques such as marinating your fingertips in lemon juice or mustard, there are other ways to interfere with your mental process every time you go to bite your nails. Many human psychology experts agree that conditioning your brain to respond to an “if/then” thought pattern is the most effective way to curb a habit. Repeat to yourself: “If I have the urge to bite my nails, then I’ll reach for a stick of gum instead.”
Other methods involve strengthening your nails so they’ll grow to be healthy and resilient. Some people recommend soaking nails in vinegar on a regular basis, but there are plenty of products on the market that are designed to fortify your nails without the unpleasant smell.
