As is often the case in the sunny summertime months, bright colors are popping up everywhere – especially on celebrities’ faces. But before you give these bold shades a go, heed a bit of expert advice when selecting products.

Shiny, fruit-stained pouts are huge right now, currently being rocked by such stars as Selena Gomez and Kate Walsh. But before you lacquer your lips, InStyle recommends selecting a hue one shade lighter than your original pick, as your lips’ natural pigment can amp up the tone a few degrees.

To keep your smile from looking too formal, the magazine suggests using a richly pigmented, water-resistant gloss, like Too Faced Glamour Gloss, instead of a stick.

If you’d like a sultry stare instead, opt for a swoosh of colorful eye makeup. Amanda Crew, who plays Zac Efron’s love interest in Charlie St. Cloud, dazzled at the film’s premiere with dark blue-lined eyes, and her makeup artist revealed how to create a look that will last.

“Layering a powdered shadow on top of a creamy pencil gives an added boost of color intensity. Plus, it helps the makeup stay put for hours,” makeup artist Rachel Goodwin told the news source. To try this technique, thickly line eyes with Sothys Waterproof Soft Eye Pencil then top with the brand’s Two Way Eye Shadow.ADNFCR-3538-ID-19908369-ADNFCR
