Nude lips are all the rage, but choosing the wrong tone can leave your face makeup looking drab instead of fab. Picking the wrong shade can wash you out and ruin the look you’re aiming for, so it’s important to learn how to pull off a nude lip.

One way to find the right hue is to conduct the wrist test. Test the color by dabbing it on the underside of your wrist to make sure the sheer lipstick is one to two shades darker than your skin tone. You should also be looking at the undertones of the color, as matching the lipstick’s tones to your natural ones is an ideal way to achieve a natural look. Fair-skinned individuals should look for hints of pink, while medium-skinned ladies can be on the lookout for rose or beige undertones and those with darker skin should search for bronze tints.

If you’re not sure how the nude lipstick is going to work, consider looking for a sheer, pale pink or peachy color. That way, you can still get the minimalist look that is popular now while also rounding out your appearance with warmer hues. Layering a lightly colored lip gloss over nude lipstick can also achieve this effect.

About Lia Marchand

Shayna Murphy is a beauty blogger from Amherst, Massachusetts, who can trace her love of beauty products back to the one afternoon when she convinced her grandmother to buy her lime green nail polish. She enjoys cooking (Indian-style dishes are a specialty!), is a bit of a history buff and collects antique milk vases. Shayna reports on the latest makeup, skincare and fashion trends and will try to convince you on a regular basis that yes, you really should wear sunscreen daily. My favorite beauty product is... - Anything containing sea salt. It's probably the most amazing exfoliant I've ever used and it leaves my skin feeling fresh and smoother than ever. Can't leave the house without my... - Lip gloss. The rest of the day can be a total bust, but if I have a great gloss on I feel like at least I've done one thing right! I would describe my style as... - Definitely au naturale. While I love exploring new shades of eyeshadow and liner on special occasions, for me the most important part of any beauty regimen is keeping my skin clear and blemish-free.
